I think we should try and bring the "whistle" to America. Im sure most of you know how in Europe and South America many fans whistle when they want a foul, or at a player they dislike, or when they don't like the play of the other team. its an easy way to get loud and most people can do it. I think the Union fans should be the ones to bring this to mls, it will be easy for new soccer fans to learn, and feel involved. I think it was two years ago when the Dolphins played a football game in Wembley in England, and a lot of british fans started to whistle and players on the field stoped playing. I know this thread/idea is easy to make fun of.. but try and be kind...
i dont think this would go over that well to the casual fan. considering that whistles are usually in support of someone/something over here, i could see that being a bit confusing. also, and more importantly i feel, lets let south america and europe stay in south america and europe
I think whistling in lieu of booing is cultural thing that really doesn't apply in this country. To Americans, whistling has a positive connotation; The thought of attempting to negate our Yankee conditioning in this regard makes my brain hurt. But I'm not trashing your idea, our fans are going to come up with all sorts of things to do at the games to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the league. If everyone whistled, it would definitely be unique and interesting, I just think that our cultural habits preclude this from catching on in Philly.
i had to urban dictionary "Europoseur", its a new one to me. Im only giving suggestions, I think it would be cool to have that atmosphere.
Yea the whistle thing here usually is in support of someone or something. However, a whistle could be incorporated into a chear. Alot of Brazilian SGs, I'm thinkin of Palmeiras's supporters in particular, do this. Theres an example of this about 2:55 seconds into this clip. I love the ambiance of a soccer match so much that I often leave a game on even when I am not watching - I even like to fall asleep listening to the sounds. And each country seems to have it's own unique sounds - the language of the announcer, the horns, whistles, cheers, chanting, singing, even the annoying African horns and the Mexican goooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!! gol gol gol gol gol gol gol rant. The city of Philadelphia is eternally linked to the roots of this great country, the main supporters club is named after one of America's most noteworthy and revered individuals. I would expect there to be a section of Revolutionary style flautists on the sideline well before we tried to undo our habit of booing to adhere to a more European style of being pissed off.
Whistling is not one aspect of the European soccer experience that adapts well to America. Nonetheless, I would be interested to hear if this occurs at the new park to get an idea of the cross-section of the draw to the games. Who knows; it might be appropriate in a limited application for a ref that fails to call a penalty. Otherwise, I'd boo and try to join in any SoB chant.
That is amazing how intense those fans are! "American code officials would frown on the use of class B fireworks among a stadium full of fans. It could make that Great White concert look like a walk in park" - Wa Wa - Debbie Downer
We're the booing capital of the world (at least according to the media). Let's stick with what we do best.
Meh, whistling is overrated. I find throwing pennies at the refs and opposing players is much more effective.
Since we're on the topic of game sounds, I personally can't stand it when people scream "You suck, a$5h0!e" during an opposing team's goal kick. Lacks creativity and is crass for its own sake. We can do better. Now, I hate how every Philly team has the Rocky theme on a playback loop as much as everyone else, but how about a united "OHHHHHHHHHH, YOU AIN'T SO BAD!!!!" (Rocky III) after an opposing team goal kick? A little cheesy, but isn't Rocky a good blue-collar, everyman, win or die trying representation of our city/club? This is the best link I could find: http://www.fandome.com/video/104902/Rocky-III-You-Aint-So-Bad/ Thoughts?
Drums are used nearly everywhere. Whistling would be replacing an American tradition, hence the poseuring.

Count me in the "Don't do anything on goal kicks" camp. Its played out. Done to death. Just sing as normal.
I see what you're saying, but I disagree. It's one of the few traditions we have developed in this league and in American soccer, so I plan on doing it.
I like the chants during the goal kicks myself but the "You suck a$$hole" chant is ridiculous and it is played out. We need something original or something unique to each keeper. I know when we chanted the keeper's name "Tomer" at the Reading Rage game it got to him and by the end of the game he was yelling at his teammates about us. If we can get into the opposing keeper's head then we have done our jobs.
Oooo...ooo...I know what we could do. While watching the Confederations Cup this summer, the fans in South Africa had these really cool horns, the crowd sounded like a huge bumblebee. We could get some of those to create an atmosphere like they have there; it's way better than anything we do in the States. They wore funny looking hats too......
