http://washingtontimes.com/sports/20030215-16785660.htm it says that he is ok and that he didn't get subbed because of injury. also it stated that barclay was acquired just in case of call-ups and injuries to olsen and convey. also they are still interested in joe although with us trading our supplemental draft pick to SJ it looks less likely that we will get somebody really good like that. but anyway woodstock (if he survives training camp) would be a good replacement for convey if he gets injured.
Good stuff as usual from John Haydon.. The interesting part of the column is Ben talking about being pulled at halftime of the Argentina match.. He does not seem very happy about being yanked...
You bet he doesn't seem happy. Can't blame him really. It was Arena's idea to tinker with him being the a-mid and then Arena backed down and pulled Olsen without giving him a fair go. The Arena says Olsen doesn't yet have the pace to play the wing when it's obvious that ben can run with Klein or Ralston. Not Bruce's finest moment, the Argentina game.
Great point greatscott. The Times gets bashed a lot on here, and I think often unfairly. Haydon's been putting out consistently high quality stuff. The fact that the Times defended soccer when the Post's Fisher nit-wittedly bashed it, is just further testament to both Haydon and the editors. Kudos for setting the record straight! -Tron
just saw Benninho at cafe delux/Wisconsin Ave with Benninette. Did not interrupt however it appears that he's been able to put being yanked in the Argie game behind him....
Nobody is saying that Ben needs counseling after getting pulled.. He can actually go out in public and enjoy a latte from time to time...
As much as I like to see the US team do well, this is a club over country moment! For DC United, I hope the US crashes out and our boys can come back and play for a team that matters! (At least more to me than the national team)
Chris is right, Devin is fighting for a U-20 starting position and will likely win it. He has also worn the captain's armband when Convey wasn't there, and I know Rongen likes him. But frankly, his position, right winger, is one of two extremely weak positions on that team (the other being left back since Chefik Simo's accident), and is one that the coaching staff is desperately looking to upgrade. I think the U-20 competition will be good for Devin, but he has a long ways to go to improve. I wouldn't look for any significant contributions from him for DC United in 2003, so it really doesn't matter that he'll miss games for the U-20 championship. -Tron
