"The USA does not need Adu" Those were the words of Alexi Lalas. Is that a fair assessment or just rude and a show of immaturity?
what was to context surrounding said quote?? either way, that is how Lallas talks... poor form to single out a player like that, but i somehow think he was trying to be so blunt, just not thinking fully
Lalas was such a jackass there. They read a twitter from Adu where he said he's praying and working hard b/c he's never wanted to be a part of anything more. Lalas then said good for him the USA does not need Adu. I think we certainly need a player of his skillset if he can ever get it all together.
I think Lalas in a fool, but how could the USA need a player that has never been an importnat part of the team and is currently struggling at a weak club in Portugal?
I tweet from Adu indicated how bad he wanted to be a part of the world. He said he's working hard and praying. Lalas then said Adu can do whatever he wants to do.... " We don't need him. The USA does not need him"
Bob Ley tried to bring Adu up because ESPN pushed him really hard and he's the only player lots of Americans know. Lalas didn't bring it up, he just commented on it.
The US could very much use the player many hoped Adu would be by now. The US in no way needs a player who struggles to get mop up minutes on one of the worst teams inthe top league in Portugal. We have options that play his position and actually get time in stronger leagues and on stronger teams week in and week out. I still think Freddy's got time to become a very good player. But, as of now I really can't see anythign that would make anyoen conclude the US needs him.
You've got a point. However, you can not only base a player's skill set on only minutes played. How many minutes have Demarcus played? Howmany has Edu played. Heck, how many has Altidore played this season. I am not saying he should be added to the roster. It's just immature to make such a remark against a player when he's expressing his willingness to work hard. Adu will serve as an good example for any African immigrants who considers playing for US.
DaMarcus hasn't played and isn't looking like figuring for the US either. Edu hasn't played due to injury but will play once he is well and then will play for the US too. Altidore gets more minutes in a much stronger league than Adu. I will be very surprised if the US fields anyone in South Africa who isn't getting significantly more playing time than Adu and mostly in stronger leagues with a few exceptions for a couple MLS guys. I'm not against Adu at all and would love to see the US be able to field more skillful players like Freddy. But, the guy has to do something against grown-ups before we get worked up over whether or not he makes the team and certainly whether or not the US "needs" Adu. Maybe by 2014, when he will still be under 25, he will have emerged as a key player for us. But, as of now, he's pretty far down the list.
DMB hasnt gotten any time since the confederations debacle against Brazil. His lack of PT has only solidified him not playing for the nats Edu was playing for both Rangers and Country before the injury. He aims to be available for the Celtic/Rangers derby coming up. He's very much in the running for a spot on the team Jozy has been getting PT with Hull and doing well. He's been with the nats since late 07. He's the leading scorer for the nats in 09' as well as qualifying. Adu hasnt seen much of any PT for club in nearly 2 years. He was one of the highest capped players in 08. i think all of the players you mentioned have gotten their just due. Adu needs consistent PT before he should be considered again for the Nats. I hope he pulls through but its farce to argue this point
He could be 100% right but after just arguing about European snobbery, why be such a jackass b/c the kid said he's praying and working hard to be part of Team USA? Adu is easily one of the more talented players to come through and well known so just being a complete dick about him on the air seemed petty to me.
Okay maybe Freddy won't/shouldn't make the roster but that was a dick move by Lalas to say that. Come on man you know he's probably watching. Could have said something more positive.
I'm not arguing Lalas can't be a dick...just that the statement that the US does not need Adu is entirely correct as of now.
no one is arguing that... some of us agree he might have a point, though i dont think anyone would say he handled it correctly. saying something like "it would be nice if Adu were fit by WC, but we can do fine without him. Our boys are a talented squad....." unless he followed it up with something else, saying "US doe not need Adu" seems petty and harsh i agree...
You do need Adu on form. Or any player like him on form. The US needs dynamic players. That's why they need Adu to be on form. Just because he's off form doesn't mean you don't need him. He just doesn't warrant a spot.
i suspect Lalas was referring to a roster spot when he said we dont need him. not necessarily saying "US doesnt need him. PERIOD" in his current form, we dont need him come 2010. If he manages to get in form and earn PT at the club level i would take a chance. but until then he simply needs to keep his chin up and work hard for 2014
Of course we don't need Adu. He's never really done anything significant for club or country at the senior level. I don't see that changing between now and June.
