Im very happy to hear this! US needs to keep improving as a soccer nation and the only way to measure where theyre at is by competing in such tournaments! Theres very many teams who will be looking to redeem themselves in this coming up Copa America such as the US, Argentina and Brasil, who really fell below expectations in the past WC.

The addition of the US to this coming up Copa America will not only help the US see where they are but also help them look at where they need improvement, not to mention tv ratings will be higher and will also give this cup more validation to a cup that had been lacking exactly that in past years.

imagine a Mexico vs US matchup in elimination round ???? WOW
Im already getting chills thinking about the possibility !!!! ;)

it'll be a great Cup without a doubt...

Actually in my beloved Uruguay USA kicked mexico out in the quarter finals of that copa america in 95 it was only a preview of what would happen on a bigger stage a few years down the road.....

    no exitis mexico

Make way for Los Yanquis! It should be a great cup. I think most honest USA fans know that the team is not on the level of Brazil & Argentina, etc, but it's great experience just to be there and there's no substitute for getting in meaningful games on the road vs. a quality opponent.

When you think about the possible matchups...games against the host country, games against Brazil or Argentina....even imagine the US playing Colombia in San Cristobal, with 20,000 Colombians making way across the border to go....that's going to be some atmosphere!

UR kidding right ??? If you dont knwo what Copa America is either ur very new to soccer or youre just ignorant! this is the equivalent of the EUROCUP in europe played every 4 years....

It is the next best thing to a WC title so to win Copa America or to even do well in this tournament will prove ALOT about your country and where they stand as a country!

BTW I didnt know US had knocked us off ( Mexico ) back in 95 but we also knocked off ur beloved URUGUAY in semifinals back in Colombia's Copa America!:D

Look out for Mexico thats all i gotta say ! with HUGO at the head position we will finally get that title we have been so close to getting already in 2 previous Copa America Finals Appearances!!!!!

Well, Bush may not pay attention to soccer in general, but Chavez may use this for many reasons. I'd agree to leave politics out, but we have to see what Hugo may do.

Does anybody else see this as the first step to a unified Copa America/Gold Cup tournament?

Let's be honest the Gold cup is a pretty useless tournament. Even diehard US and Mexican fans don't care about it that much. It's only redeeming quality is the Confederations Cup berth given to the winner, which makes it a big deal to nations such as Honduras, Canada, Jamaica, etc.

This summer both Mexico and the US will be in the Copa America and the Gold Cup. They'll bring their "A" teams to Copa America and their "B" teams to the Gold Cup. My guess is the US uses their overseas players for the Copa and will try out some younger inexperienced players for the Gold cup.

Conmebol has been inviting Mexico and another since 93

and will continue to do so...dont think a unified tourney will ever take place

personally and i have stated this before

there shouldnt be invited guests at confederation tourneys

They've just announced there will be no invited guests to the Gold Cup Tournament, which actually makes it much less appealing. Instead of Brazil and South Korea at the tournament, we'll get Cuba and the Bahamas.

and thats the way it should be

the Gold cup is for Concacaf teams

what business has Brazil or South Korea there?

no doubt Brazil and Argentina would make Euro 2008 much stronger

still you dont see them getting an invite

There are a few threads already on this.

In the end, what obligation does conmebol have to lift a concacaf tournament?
Sounds like your problem, not ours. :p

Basically strong concacaf teams are not being tested enough to help them on the global stage.

Hence something like Copa America allows those stronger concacaf teams to show their true metal. Or lack thereof.

    US needs the Copa America.
