The US Nuclear Arsenal. Is it the deterrent it once was? In the "peaceful" times of today does the bigger missle still represent the more powerful country? Discuss.

The U.S. nuclear stockpile is in serious danger of not being a deterrent!

    We need to:

Begin testing again (at Nevada Test Site underground or Pacific Test Site aboveground)

Continue building components for existing arsenal re-supply

Begin research again (a lot of the nuclear experts are dying off and no new nuclear scientists or research are being funded)

We in this nation rely upon the nuclear weapon as our chief deterrent. However, we have abandoned the bomb in terms of funding! The last 50 years of peace (no world wars) have largely been due to the nuclear weapon as a deterrent.

Could you please elaborate. Who is our nuclear stockpile supposed to deter. With the exception of North Korea which we can handle with what exists today, what state would/could do damage to us?

To China, yes. To Islamic terrorists, no. To North Korea, who knows.

I'd say Wal-Mart's purchasing power is a far bigger deterent to China attacking us then our stockpile.

National Missile Defense is the biggest threat to the US deterrent, because it encourages the development of better weapons by "them."

When somebody operating under the orders of no nation attacks us with a nuclear weapon, who do we hit back? That is the scariest part, I think that if we are hit radiologically, the nuts we have in charge will feel the need to use our nukes. The question then is on whom?

Well I guess if the terrorists are from Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Iraq had better watch out.

Even crazy little Kim Jong has to realize that we could sink his entire country into the ocean if he tries anything. But anonymous islamic extremist X who left his home country a decade ago might not have to worry so much.

Missile defense is a necessity. Our enemies and potential enemies are working furiously to develop missile technology. It's worth noting that Israel, a country that has little resources to waste, is investing heavily in missile defense. We must move beyond partisan bickering on this crucial issue.

No, the bigger economy potentially represents the more powerful nation. If you want to come after me swinging Bruno Maglis, I'll blow you away with a $100 handgun.

Yeah, missile defense protects us from all ICBMs with a known launching point and a known target if we know when the launch occurs and lab conditions apply...otherwise...it is just another reason for China and others to develop better tech...
There are no real ICBM threats, the tech don't work, and our testing is a bunch of racist, patriarchal BS...

The cowboy Texans earned his nukes...you gooks can't be trusted!

Otherwise we better start investing a lot more developing this technology.

What I NEED is a rock that sweats good dark beer that does not give me a hangover, with kind buds growing on it that are invisible to law enforcement, grants me my JD without me having to go to more classes, makes me kids not throw tantrums, and matches everything I wear...let's spend a couple billion $ on that research...with American engineering it's bound to work...or something

Ben, if laser beams can destroy incoming missiles, so can your outgoing missiles being destroyed by it. So what is the big deal? It's just some laser beams.

The thing is - developing advanced weapons to destroy each other is a global competition of wasting resource that could be put into good use. Russians know it - they are broke.

This kind of research should be banned on a world wide scale. Humans already have enough deadly weapons to kill each other over again and again already.

But Bush restarted it these wasteful projects.

    Worst. President. Ever.

Please don't do for Bush what you've done for gay marriage.
