By now many of you will have read the article of the Upper Deck-MLS contract and the 2004 trading cards, well I just called a couple of hrs. ago the UD company in Carlsbad, Ca. and I didn't like what I heard. First, the operator that I spoke to (won't mention the name)didn't have a clue to what I was talking about "2004 MLS trading cards" I said to him about four times, nowhere to be found, after a couple of minutes of looking through memos, "something showed up, and this is the part I want you guys to pay attention to, there was a 2004 MLS card set, to be distributed by the UD Co., get this, in the UK and CANADA! what the hell is going on here! if this is true (I hope I spoke to a complete moron that didn't know what he was doing) what are we supposed to do? the real fans of the game here in the U.S. won't have a chance to walk into a store and buy the card set whenever we want! much love to the Canadians and Brits but, I dont think they care to much about a league that is not theirs, right? Any ways, I will call again next week to verify if its true or not if you feel like calling the UD Co. here is the number (760)929-6500.
Well, that takes care of the Pat Onstad, Dwayne DeRosario and John Spencer cards! I would say, let's have patience until the season starts. I can't imagine any company would be this stupid to waste their money down the drain. Hopefully, you just spoke with a dolt.
I covered Upper Deck as a collectibles writer from 1991 to 1995. I had to take a shower after writing about them. There is a book about the company's rise: "Card Sharks: How Upper Deck Turned a Child's Hobby into a High-Stakes, Billion-Dollar Business." If you want, here's the Amazon link. It will open your eyes. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...f=sr_1_1/103-9694257-9866249?v=glance&s=books
