This is a good short summary of what is going on in the 3 National Guard cases (Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago) by law professor Steve Vladeck. https://www.stevevladeck.com/p/185-the-state-of-play-in-the-national
I was in the City last week---first time in a bit (sadly). Had a great slice at a little place in Nolita near our hotel.
There are no great slices in Nolita. There are great pies though. Lombardis is one of the best in the city.
Ha! To my unrefined palate, I thought the slices at Nolita Pizza were pretty good. But I do know Lombardi's, another block up. We were staying at the Moxy on Bowery. We just didn't have time to do a whole sit down there that night---had to get to the Grandaddy show across the bridge.
The idea that you'd stay in Manhattan to go to a concert in Brooklyn is still so foreign to me. Not in a bad way at all, just in a weird way. I was the first person in my friend group to make the jump to Brooklyn. I could never get anyone to come out, it was like asking them to come to Philadelphia or something. They were all living in tenements sandwiched in between rival drug gangs in Alphabet City and I had stained glass windows and hand-carved balistrades.
Wife had a work trip scheduled a while back and wanted to stay there. Then several friends here said they were going too as it was their kids' fall break and they wanted to tour NYU, because their daughter wants to go there. Those particular friends, btw, used to live in the East Village before moving to Atlanta. Anyway, it was a perfect storm of a bunch of friends coincidentally going to be in NYC at the same time, so I tagged along since my wife's company was paying for the hotel, meals, etc. The Grandaddy show was a great coincidental bonus but not the focus of the trip, thus the reason we didn't stay somewhere near Brooklyn Steel. Probably more than you wanted to know.
I saw Grandaddy open for Elliott Smith before I had any idea who they were. Later a friend burned a copy of Sophtware Slump for me and I was like “oh, this is that one band!” I don’t remember much other than they were more worth watching than a lot of opening bands.
They were fun in Golden Gate Park, 2012. Arguably the greatest Outside Lands line-up ever assembled. Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes, Norah Jones, Caveman, Neil Young and Stevie Wonder, among the many highlights that weekend.
I'm guessing Stevie & Neil have to go on early Speaking of timing. Saw a Jason Newsted clip where he said Metallica when they toured with GnR said he learned a lot about how not to be a "rock star" Like going on at your scheduled time & not hours late and not treating people who looked up to them like dirt. Found it
Neil was with Crazy Horse that night, amazing... Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Setlist at Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival 2012 on August 10, 2012 | setlist.fm Stevie was incredible, as you'd expect... Stevie Wonder Concert Setlist at Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival 2012 on August 12, 2012 | setlist.fm ...the biggest contrast was Sigur Rós playing at one end of the park, and Metallica at the other.

Chicago throws a Halloween parade. Very cute and I bet a lot of fun. ICE gasses everyone at the parade for....reasons. https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/o...8j1edQvt5gbc2lNsh4_aem_z0Ayn2io0bFv5pdGoIJ7pA
Posting here rather than in the Trump thread since it about National Guard deployment. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/national-guard-dissent-9.6957454 Staff Sgt. Demi Palecek, a Democratic state legislative candidate in the same district as [Capt. Dylan] Blaha, also intends to defy orders to deploy to Chicago. ... Blaha and Palecek could face repercussions for their stances. Refusing a lawful federal order while serving in the National Guard could lead to a court-martial, imprisonment, or a felony-level discharge. Both say they’ve already received written warnings, and Blaha says he’s had his security clearance revoked and an investigation opened against him.
No, not familiar to be honest. I'll ask my friends who used to live there. Went to Buddakan. Yeah, I know, Fusion, not authentic Chinese but it was a work dinner for my wife. Plus, we were meeting people at the bar in the Chelsea, so we wanted to be walking distance.
It finally happened: https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/new...patrol-agents-on-chicagos-west-side-dhs-says/ Unidentified, masked, perps tried to kidnap people off the streets. A resident opened fire to protect them. Turns out it was DHS doing the kidnapping.
“Border Patrol agents descended on Charlotte this weekend searching for immigrants in the country illegally. It remains unclear how long the agents will stay. …. The arrival of the Border Patrol in Charlotte, a moderately Democratic city known for its booming banking industry, has puzzled many people in the state. Federal law limits the Border Patrol’s focus to the country’s 6,000 miles of international borders and a zone extending about 100 miles inland from the borders and the coastline. Charlotte is about 170 miles from the nearest point on the coast.” … from a NY Times report
I don't think that is counted as an international border, tbh. That would, essentially, mean that the entire country is within CBP's purview.
