Broadview, IL, as home to an ICE gulag, has been the epicenter of Midwest ICE activity

Thompson said the ICE facility, which was intended to operate only as a processing center, has been tucked into the same industrial park area for decades. It was hard to find any resident or business owner who knew it existed before the recent demonstrations.

Thompson placed the blame on federal authorities for the escalating clashes. She said when protesters showed up about a month ago, they were peaceful. First Amendment groups have accused federal authorities of carrying out excessive tactics, including pelting protesters and the media with tear gas and pepper balls. A federal judge in Chicago ruled that federal law enforcement could not employ such tactics unless under serious threat.

Thompson said there was a certain irony in the Trump administration announcing a peace deal with the Middle East even as clashes in his own country have accelerated.

“I heard about the peace position in Gaza — we don’t even have peace in our own nation. The hypocrisy is so evident,” she said. “How do you go and say peace somewhere else, and you can’t say peace in America?”

The smartest thing they’re doing…if you could call it that..:is slow walking this. Do something that in normal times would be outrageous…see if you can get away with it..:then do something a little worse…or expand the previous thing.

Too much heat all at once and the frog jumps out of the water.

Going to 100 right now (martial law etc) would be incredibly risky as there is a substantial likelihood that it ends with their dead bodies swinging from their feet.

SOP. There are quite a few videos where ICE rolls out of the detention center in Portland and starts firing off tear gas and rubber ball canisters and the worst thing the demonstrators are doing is milling about in the middle of the street.

Speaking of ICE being trash. Last week a protestor was injured and an ambulance was called. It isn’t clear how the protestor was injured, but when the ambulance showed up, ICE refused to let the ambulance leave and even threatened to shoot the driver

At this point, Xi is just waiting - as the US collapses internally and shows itself to not be a trustworthy international partner, Taiwan is going to get scared and go to China and ask for their protection from us.

There won't even be mass layoffs. I think the very best you can hope for from the Dems is some moving of deckchairs at the management level, but I'm not sure they have the testicular fortitude to do even that.

Something about the reporting on this video is…well..odd to me. I don’t doubt that a video depicting something like this would be real…but the confirmations that this one is real I’ve seen are circular.

1)Ice is publicly claiming this specific video is from a year ago and calling it political disinformation
2)the Hoffman estates police department statement references “videos” (generally) surrounding an ICE raid/incident in the neighborhood…:but doesn’t specifically call out this video. The only specifics they give is what happened in their parking lot (ICE brought some kids to the police station to file assault charges and a crowd formed)
3)the US representative for this district (IL-08 I can’t spell his name) uses the Hoffman estates general statement as confirmation that this SPECIFIC video is real and happened yesterday.

Again…nothing in the content of the video makes me skeptical…just the reporting itself. And if this rep ends up having to walk this back it would be pretty bad. The right will make seize on this and try to call into question the authenticity of all…real videos of ICE violence.

I hope my minor skepticism is unfounded.

Edit: example of what I’m talking about

In a tweet, the Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on Evelyn's arrest video, saying, "Imagine being so desperate to demonize law enforcement you post a video from a burglary arrest Chicago police made over a year ago. This isn't even ICE."[specific]

Hoffman Estates police, however, said ICE was in the area on Friday. [general]

A statement sent to CBS News Chicago reads in part, "The only interaction we had with ICE was when they came to the police department to file a police report reference an incident that occurred during their enforcement. They ultimately decided to complete the report this week with us and have not completed that yet."

I'm not so sure he would be willing to do that. Remember, at his core, he's a coward, and I'm not convinced he will go beyond sending in National Guard troops. Beyond that, declaring Martial Law would mean having Hegseth involved and he is incompetent at best, and likely does not have the trust of his military leadership. Sure, they will follow orders, but they have all been around long enough to know how to minimize their deployment/role.

Let's not assume Xi is some master tactician. He's in almost a similar place as Trump having surrounded himself with "Yes" men. In addition, they must rely on external trading partners to sustain anything they want to do. Largely, they depend on the US and Europe, and Trump is trying to withdraw the US from China's economic influence. If they invade Taiwan, they will experience harsh responses and severe damage to their economy due to sanctions of some kind, methinks.

That article seems to suggest that it did, in fact, happen as originally suggested.

Mind, one of the things I did check is the weather, and it was partly cloudy for the period in question. That seems to also match the visual.

China in general has some natural human advantages. One a larger population just means more intelligent people. Second, they don't have the problem that our population has with lead exposure. It's believed around half of all living Americans had exposure to lead at adverse levels. *https://today.duke.edu/2022/03/lead-exposure-last-century-shrunk-iq-scores-half-americans this study estimates the damage at 824 million IQ points spread across 170 million Americans* We have no way of really knowing the extent of cultural and political damage caused by this lead exposure. Third, they are the closest thing to a modern economy that still is able to be entirely self-reliant to a degree. They are reliant on European and American consumption which at some point will have a reckoning as both of those areas lose more wealth given the impeding end of global imperialism.

I don't see them having to invade Taiwan at all. I think they will peacefully assimilate it.

That’s not a meme. Thats a screenshot of a Bluesky post with an imbedded video of Johnson answering that way. And Cascarina’s comment is spot on…the idea that the leader of the house pretends to be unaware of shit like this is a symbol of the unseriousness of GOP congressional leadership.

Long way of saying…yeah…memes suck…but your comment is way off base here.

Edit: in fact..:it’s even worse. He didn’t deny seeing the shooting…he denied that it was crossing the line.

And that is a very Mike Johnson comment. "I haven't seen [insert thing he's asked about that he wants to deny]"

This is a red-herring, in terms this discussion. From the article:

Even more startling was lead’s toll on intelligence: childhood lead exposure may have blunted America’s cumulative IQ score by an estimated 824 million points – nearly three points per person on average. The researchers calculated that at its worst, people born in the mid-to-late 1960s may have lost up to six IQ points...

    And, as they note:

Dropping a few IQ points may seem negligible, but the authors note that these changes are dramatic enough to potentially shift people with below-average cognitive ability (IQ score less than 85) to being classified as having an intellectual disability (IQ score below 70).

This, the lead exposure is likely to do more harm to those lower down the IQ score (which, as we have discussed in the education thread and elsewhere, is not necessarily accurate).

That aside, those born in the mid to late 1960s are, themselves, approaching retirement age and will be replaced fairly soon, if not already. In addition to that, China has it's own human capital problem in that the One Child policy has greatly harmed population growth, and it is believed that the youth unemployment rate in China is far beyond what is officially reported.

Perhaps, but they have been trying that for decades and every pro-China political party gets easily beat (as far as I have read. Mind, my reading is not comprehensive). One of the core principals of the Taiwanese people is to be independent from China, so I don't think it would be possible to peacefully assimilate.

  19. A competent plotter years ago in preparations for the big day would have a list of generals, supposed to be in favour of a coup and a list of those to eliminate.
Have they fired black/melanated generals yet, the socalled incompetent DEI promotions?
    How many are there anyway?
Some time ago I mentioned/quoted a source that about 90,000 military have their foreign wives as possible targets/threatened by ICE.
Add to that the number of non white military men and women and I would say good luck with your martial law.

An invasion of Taiwan would be suicide. The Taiwan straight is really choppy, the coastline has very few beaches. Those beaches are well populated. China hasn't even invaded Kinmen which is a mile off their coastline. Taking Taiwan is a pipedream. Especially as the fog of war is no longer a thing.

I wouldn't discount it nearly as much as you do. Baby Boomers as a whole possess half of all the Wealth in America. So even if they are leaving jobs they will have a disproportionate effect on society if they so choose to because of their sheer purchasing power. Obviously there are certain areas that will move forward past the Boomers (movies, music, etc) but politically? Still major drivers. Baby Boomers still currently comprise half the Senate, despite most of them reaching retirement age.

And the fact that the press keeps on letting him get away with this (it’s the same shit trump does though I suspect Trump really doesn’t remember if he’s seen it. ) how hard is it to respond with something like: you’re the third highest elected leader in the country ho can you do your job completely ignorant of current events ?”

It’s part of the media’s complicity that they pretend to believe him, or any of them, when they say they can’t comment because they haven’t heard or read the comment.

The proper form of the question is to directly quote Trump, or directly state what happened, and ask for his reaction.
