Track is being roiled by a number of revelations ... mainly in America ... about track athletes taking a new designer steroid made in collusion with athletes, coaches, and chemists. http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994296 http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,7632113%5E14822,00.html http://www.smh.com.au/text/articles/2003/10/17/1066364485294.htm What kind of implications may this have in other sports? Cycling? Soccer? American football? Weightlifting? Might we see retesting from recent FIFA championships (Japorea, WWC, U-17s)? Can a team be made to "vacate" a title if enough people were "on the juice?"
I wouldn't say nobody is using it, but generally soccer isn't a sport where muscle bulk is much of an advantage. Many of the eastern block nations looked to be pumping their athletes with every substance known to man to get a sporting advantage, and while that worked for track & field, it never stopped the East German football team being anything other than rubbish. With regards to having to vacate a title, I did hear that one of the Argentinian players' samples after the 1978 final proved him to be not only healthy and free of drugs, but he had the additional good news of his sample revealing that he was pregnant as well - but how valid that story is is not something I can say with certainty.
And it looks like there is going to be retroactive testing!!! Watch out!!! http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/sports/AP-OLY-Winter-Games-Steroids.html
