I meant more regarding the efficacy of the proposed subs (which then turned into reality as subs and did not really do much).

I'd also dissagree that Sean was the weak link. I'd have to go back and watch the goal to place blame on him specifically, but overall he wasn't worse than anyone else. It was a bad/off night all around.

This might make an eye-opening study:

Back in the 90s, a LOT of young girls went to USWNT games and screamed their heads off for Mia Hamm. A good portion of the game was just a "MEE-UHH! MEE-UHH!" chant or screaming whenever the ball went anywhere near her.

Based on the trajectory of women's sports, I'd say a lot of them grew up and are taking their own kids.

Did a similar thing happen when David Beckham played for LA? Is something similar expected to happen now that Leo Messi is playing for LA?

They seem to like the player, but will the bait be good enough to keep the fish swimming around?

Whether true or not, I expect it to be used again if the switch is made to Fall start - Spring end in a couple of years.

 

MLS has changed its story so many times that my head is still spinning. I will take this with a whole shaker of salt. FIFA is happy to take the heat, MLS is not for obvious reasons. They’re trying to do damage control.

Garber himself had 3 conversations (All Stars, Leagues Cup final, and White House) with Crew ownership where questions were asked about the Club World Cup. There were earlier discussions with MLS too (just not directly with Garber) starting right after Poochuca. Arace from the Dispatch also questioned Garber on the record about it in July.

We were first told that it was a MLS and US Soccer decision. They then later added the Supporters Shield vs MLS Cup match scenario which was widely reported. It morphed into MLS gives input, but it’s FIFA’s final decision at the White House. We never were told point blank that it was an isolated FIFA decision and no criteria for qualification was ever given. If it was strictly FIFAs choice, we and the press would have been told so right from the beginning.

 

I guess this is Don Garber throwing Gianni Infantino under the bus because the Miami decision was widely unpopular outside South Florida.

You need to drop bombs like these in the Soccerwise or Scuffed discord. Reporters go on rumors with slightly more legitimacy there vs on twitter. I know another former IM here is on the Scuffed one.

Speaking of Soccerwise, I’m a little concerned about how cosy they’re getting with Apple.

I concede the remainder of my time to my opponent for their ability to make my point more effectively than I can.

 

But was it an example of "authentic frontier gibberish"?

 

Would you mind elaborating on Soccerwise and Apple? I probably get to listen to 2/3 of their MLS/men's shows and maybe 1/5 on the NWSL/women's shows. I generally enjoy it as a looser version of Extra Time. When they were discussing the MLS best of 3 series, Tom mentioned he hated it and something like "we all know it's a way for Apple TV to get more games." I guess I haven't picked up on the cozying up with Apple, but I guess it could also make sense if they thought Apple was a pathway to more stability. (I can't imagine running a soccer podcast like that is making a sustainable amount of money for anyone, but I could be wrong.)

 

MLS content has next to zero value outside mlssoccer.com and Apple, which is why no one bigger even bothers (except for The Athletic, who scaled back tremendously over the years). Of course you’d be nice to the rights holders. Hasn’t Tom been on Apple MLS shows already or did I just imagine that? Gaas used to be as well obviously.

 

Every update on this makes it easier for me to just not watch or support it.
