Hey just wanted to pop in here for some opinions. This year V-Army desperately want to create a central location where there are huge tailgates. I know that many of you tailgate at both Columbus Crew and Ohio State so I wondered if there were any ideas. I can reveal that V-Army will be creating a database wherein it's members will sign up to bring certain items to each tailgate. I can also reveal that we very much want to create more of a community atmosphere at said tailgate. Part one of the plan is to have people bring in paper plates, plastic silverware, plastic glasses, and paper napkins. The stock that we receive, I will keep and bring to every home match. That way we have the absolute necessary items in stock at all times. Part two is going out and purchasing items to cook with. Here are the links to the items that I am considering: http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=218835-36029-253303 http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=11802-451-465630004 http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=59002-40278-38068 The first one is your standard portable gas grill, at $30 it's very affordable. The second is the Thermos portable gas grill, that functions almost like a George Forman, it's $150. The third item is a fryer, and that is $50. I had all along planned to go with the $150 Thermos, however after doing some research, I'm thinking that getting the fryer and smaller gas grill would be the way to go. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone used any of these? One additional item that V-Army was going to look into was purchasing a sound system. However in the absence of power out in the parking lot, does anyone have any experience using other items? Basically I want to make sure that April 3rd is a massive, massive party. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
I'm cool with just stopping at Skyline before I go, use someone's car stereo. Nobody will want to listen to my music anyways.
Not trying to shoot down your ideas, but why would we need a fryer? I'd just get 1 or 2 of those table-top grills.
Obviously he wants it for the cooking video! Actually, what did you have in mind with that bad boy? If you try Target, they have quite the selection. http://www.target.com/gp/search.htm...1923064?url=index=target&field-keywords=grill
There are loads of things that can be made in a fryer. Fries, potato chips, poppers, wings, chicken tenders. I think it's easy and cheap so I'm thinking that I'm sure to purchase one of those and maybe two gas grills.
Zak-- I vote we get one or two of those huge, massive heaters I see on the NFL sidelines. It didnt warm up until what, June, last year?
Remember those has browns we grilled at WC? There really was no point to that comment but that was good.
Just something that came to mind... if you're going to have that big fryer, what are you going to do with all of the oil that you'll need? Won't that make a huge mess, or can you seal this thing up with the oil inside of it when you transport it. I really don't know much about these fryer things, so maybe I've got it all wrong or something. I just figure that it could get sorta messy.
None of my business, but FWIW that behemoth there is a turkey fryer. That is pretty much it's only function. As the world's foremost expert on frying wings, IMHO that would be virtually impossible at best. Either way, lugging it around with 30 gallons of peanut oil in it will be problematical and dumping it in the parking lot would be a violation of the law big time. Two suggestions, either of which involves fun and beer galore: 1) Get a smoker. Doesn't have to be a big one, although eventually that would be cool: Home Depot used to have one for about $150. Sort of like this one: The deal is that smoking is indirect cooking. Takes, like, six to 12 hours depending on what you're doing. Poultry takes maybe four hours, ribs six or eight, and the 13 pound brisket we did this weekend took 12 hours. So you get some friends, set up at midnight, (or 4 am or 9 am or whatever) tend the fire and drink beer all night long. And it's the best food you've ever had. 2) If you wanna do wings, get yourself the biggest frying pan you can find, put it over a gas grill and do the job. Don't fcuk with frying appliances. And frankly I don't recommend even that unless you're sure no drunks will fall into it. 300 degree vegetable oil is a third degree burn and a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Yeah frying is out of the question. Here's an idea! I'll run to KFC and get a bucket or two and you guys pretend you're frying it. That's the PC version anyways. Let's get a ********ing Tandoori oven and have curries before the game.
I've used a similar turkey fryer to make Buffalo Wings at Wizards tailgates before, and it has worked beautifully each time.
Have you made anything like fries or something? How long did it take to do the wings? I like the idea of the smoker, the only problem is, all items we use have to fit in the trunk of a Mazda.
I've made fries in there as well. It can take a while to heat the fryer (about 45 minutes). You want to heat the oil to 350F (it should come with a thermometer). You can safely throw a whole 3 pound bag of wings (about 36 wings) in there at a time (make sure they're not too frozen or the oil will boil over). I would say a batch will take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. I usually take a fork and a knife to check to see if the wings are done, but if they're floating on top, that's usually a good sign. As long as you aren't driving home like a maniac and you've got other things in your trunk to rest up against the pot, you probably won't have to worry about the oil spilling out. The oil usually weighs it down enough.
Good idea. OSU has a great burn unit. You can eat fookin CHINESE for all that I care. Or that Indian garbage Eggy is always on about. Whatever.
I'd really like to come up with something that is "exclusive" to Columbus Crew tailgates, something identifiable. I wish I had a bigger car, if I did, then I would invest in a bigger grill. I'll have a look at foodtv.com and see if there are any cool tailgate ideas.
