I'd go for Benaglio Zubi Coltorti (sub: Zibung) Magnin Spycher Senderos Djourou Eggimann von Bergen Behrami Lichtsteiner (sub: Grichting) Inler Gelson Abdi Yakin Barnetta Stocker (for his current form as left midfielder in combination with Streller) Vonlanthen Gygax (subs: Cabanas, Ziegler, Chiumiento, Huggel) Frei Streller Nkufo Derdyiok (sub: rather Chiumiento, then another striker) edit: Muller played 65min with Lyons reserves in Paris today and Kuhn was watching the match
he had also a very good game against Zurich. of course, he was lucky Chipperfield and Degen are injured.
26names in the provisional squad: GK: Diego Benaglio, Fabio Coltorti, Pascal Zuberbühler. DF: Valon Behrami, Philipp Degen, Johan Djourou, Mario Eggimann, Stéphane Grichting, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Ludovic Magnin, Patrick Müller, Philippe Senderos, Christoph Spycher, Steve von Bergen. MF: Tranquillo Barnetta, Ricardo Cabanas, Gelson Fernandes, Daniel Gygax, Benjamin Huggel, Gökhan Inler, Hakan Yakin, Johan Vonlanthen. ST: Eren Derdiyok, Alex Frei, Blaise Nkufo, Marco Streller. ******* 2 of the 6 central defenders will have to stay at home and evtl. one guy on the right side Ph.Degen-Behrami-Lichsteiner or Cabanas. The fact Kuhn visited Muller in Paris means a lot to Muller, so he surely would try to pay back at Euro. Then, he is the only one with who Senderos really feels in confidence. So, if he picks Muller, then it's probably to partner Senderos in the starting XI. If he doesn't pick Muller, then he has yet to find the perfect pair for central defence.
Dzemaili, D.Degen and Ziegler are on call then, Dzemaili, Ziegler, Djourou and Derdyiok will play with the U-21 against Portugal. Dunno if this is a good idea as we have Portugal in our group
if Nkufo can't play, I guess Kuhn will call up Ziegler as second left midfielder on the right side there are currently 5 players, but without Nkufo Vonlanthen could be considered also as 4th striker...
well, bit of a surprise, but makes more sense then Lustrinelli. Häberli could play alongside Yakin, while there is no Chiumiento for Lustrinelli...
Not the most exciting name, but he earned his chance with 18 ASL goals. I was there at St. Jakob when he got his only appearance, I remember it because there was a three-member fan club right next to me. Bad news about Nkufo, but he never managed to replicate his Eredivisie form for the Nati.
Is it definite? There MUST be something wrong with Köbi's training methods, this is sick. If this continues we won't have a squad left for the EC... We're lucky Barnetta's injury wasn't so bad...
Yeah, he's gone home already... The central defence looks crazy fragile..Somebody has to really step up against Slovakia
what starting XI and formation do you think Kuhn will pick v Switzerland ? not necessarily who he SHOULD pick, but who you think he WILL pick ? any info would be appreciated
against Slovakia withouth Barnetta nor Degen nor Spycher: Benaglio Lichsteiner-Müller-Senderos-Magnin Gygax/Behrami-Inler-Gelson-Vonlanthen Streller-Frei against the Czech at Euro it should prob. look like this: Benaglio Degen-Müller-Senderos-Magnin Vonlanthen-Inler-Gelson-Barnetta Streller-Frei
a question: who do you think will have to stay at home? 1) Lichtsteiner, Behrami, Gygax, Cabanas? 2) Grichting or Eggimann?
How about keeping Senderos at home? Controversial I know, but his form for Arsenal gives me doubts about him. Yes, he tends to perform better for the Nati than at the Emirates, but I feel he may have peaked too soon as a 'youngster'. He's so goddam cumbersome, but can of course look very good if the ball is in the air, but on the ground and with a pacey forward against him - not so. Drogba is just one of his nemeses. So good job Drogba isn't at Euro 2008 then. Granted that Grichting/Muller/Eggimann aren't exactly 'speed merchants' but I'd feel happier with them than Phil. But I'm quite happy to be proved wrong. To answer your 'who should stay at home' question directly: I'd say Cabanas, but that's only if you want a direct answer. I've always been a fan of his, but perhaps he's lost his way somewhat?
I'd go with leaving out Grichting and Häberli. Eggimann gets to stay 'cause of his goalscoring abilities
For some additional stuff: http://switzerland.worldcupblog.org (but it's mainly about Euro 2008 at the moment of course) Incidentally, although I post relatively infrequently on here (and essentially use this site as a source of information) I do give Switzerland an almighty plug on http://www.londonroad.net/Forums (see thread about Euro 2008 in the 'Pub Talk' section) I plough a lone furrow on there as everyone else is either disinterested in Euro 2008 (England never qualified of course) or are supporting the 'usual suspects' as a 'second team' I'm alone in supporting Switzerland. Any 'help' would be appreciated. NB: You have to register to view/post on the message board.
three did not play a minute today: Eggimann, Huggel and Häberli. As both Grichting and Djourou played a few minutes, this was a sign for Eggimann he has to stay at home. I'd like to mention Senderos played the first pass in 4 of the 5 most dangerous swiss attacks today. In the first half he didn't dare, but he looks a class better alongside Müller then in other matches. Then, as Eggimann maybe Häberli has to stay at home as well. We can go with Frei, Streller and Derdyiok in attack as there still are Vonlanthen and Yakin in support of attack. Behrami, Vonlanthen and Müller all took their chances. Maybe Kuhn is going with Behrami on the right flank
