    Here are the current odds:

    R Benitez 2/1
    A Curbishley 5/2
    M O'Neill 7/2
    J Mourinho 8/1
    C Ranieri, K Dalglish, S McClaren 12/1
    D Deschamps 25/1

I think Benitez will bring instant credibility back to the club. Valencia may have been the most succesful club in Europe last season. However, I don't know if another foreign manager is the right way to go. The problem with Curbishley is that he has never managed a major club before.

Either way, the board must get this right. I'd like to hear who everyone thinks should be the manager, and who you think will be the manager.

I agree with each of those except for McClaren, who is a no for me.

Were I a betting man (who am I kidding - I am), I'd put 5 pounds on Benitez to cover, and 5 pounds on Mourinho. That's a good price for him.

By acting first, we seem to have given ourself a little leeway. If Benitez or Mourinho fall through, we can wait a couple weeks to see if Ranieri falls into our lap before we go swamp trolling for MON or McClaren . . .

I dont know who we need as manager. I like martin o'neill but i dont think he will leave celtic for liverpool. we need something different than houllier, maybe a younger manager with more determination and fire. someone who knows the club and wont make excuses....damn...i really dont know who what will happen...
    what do you guys think?

I'm not sure if my head has just been up my arse for the last few months, (Well, it has, I was finishing up my thesis), but I don't remember seeing you around before. If you're new to the boards, welcome!

I think either of the first two names on usscouse's list qualify as "younger" in the managing world. (I think Mourinho is 40 or 41, and Benitez is 45). Short of hiring me (I've won 32 European Cups in Championship Manager - including 8 with Darlington and one with Admira Wacker from Austria!), that's about as young as you're going to get with pertinent experience.

I like MON too. I also like Laetitia Casta. That doesn't mean I'd put either in charge of my football club. "Nice guy" status doesn't get you very far in that regard. It certainly didn't for GH.

Benitez and Mourino are younger but better than that they understand the "game of today" I think they if can combine that with the pace of the EPL they'll come out tops.

GH had it in 2001 but didn't keep up with the changes and adapt.

I could do it but I'm closer to Robbies age than Mourino's. My U13's did well in the Stanwood district last year.

I haven't even heard anything remotely supporting this possibility, but what about Hitzfeld? He's out at Bayern after 4 titles and some impressive CL performances in 6(?) seasons.

would love either mourinho or benitez... the point is that we have to replace Houllier with a great coach who will be able to handle the pressure that will most certaintly be heaped upon him next season. Don't know if Mclaren, Curbishley, or even Ranieri would be right for LFC.

  9. As of yesterday . . .

"Liverpool have had no contact with Valencia coach Rafael Benitez with a view to him replacing Gerard Houllier, according to the Spaniard's agent."

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=301438&cc=5739

But that was yesterday. . .

scd84: Welcome. I'd put Hitzfeld on the list--in fact, I did somewhere on these boards--along with Benitez and Ranieri (I'm assuming that Mourinho will take over at Chelsea); he's third on my list, though.

I now think that anyone other than these three is a step down, of those whose names have surfaced.

If Benitez leaves El Templo for Anfield, I'm fighting Matt Clark.

Whenever Liverpool does something that upsets me, I always blame him for some reason.

Mourinho said it several times that is favourite club in England was Liverpool, and had ambitions to coach them and bring them all the sucess they had in the past, Chelsea due to money involved is almost irresistble nowadays, but in terms of team who Mourinho rather coach when asked about Chelsea and Liverpool a couple of months ago he said clearly that prefered to coach Liverpool...

    Yeah, but it's amazing what a four-year, £20m contract offer can do to a man's preferences. ;)

Welcome to these boards, by the way.

That may be true. But will he still prefer to manage Liverpool after he sees how much money each club is offering to pay him? I doubt it.

The scary part is, I actually am going to England when next season gets underway for the 4th time.

Weren't you supposed to come to live in NYC?

Oh right, the topic. Well, we are in a search for a manager as well. I think that if Mourinho goes anywhere, it will be Chelsea. I think if MoN goes anywhere, it will be Anfield. We'll probably end up getting Christian Gross.

Twas bout time too! Face it, he was stifling your club, too much good/decent players to be playing that kind of football.

But, what makes you think Rafa would want to leave Sunny Valencia, a team he just won la liga, Uefa cup and is in the Champions league automatic place to come to coach Liverpool?

Not saying it wouldn't be nice to see him there though. A 4 team race for the title would be the monkey's nuts.

Benitez already threw his hat in the ring a couple of days ago.

    http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/mediawatc...040521-1550.htm

"Interested parties were pushing candidates' names forward in number even before it emerged Houllier's position was under review.

Benitez is believed to be desperate to meet Liverpool and discuss a possible move to Anfield.

Having led Valencia to a championship and UEFA Cup double this season, he's eyeing the chance to test himself in the Premiership."

  20. Right. The allure is that, having "conquered" La Liga, the next big challenge is the Premiership.

Interesting to see that at least two continental managers are seemingly willling to take a step down to manage Liverpool. I would've thought LFC had lost some of its lustre in the past decade, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact they both grew up during the peak of Liverpool's glory days in Europe.

Well in that case, bring it on! I may be a Man Utd supporter, but I enjoy when other teams play good football, and if he's the man to bring you up to the standard of the big three, so be it. ;)

I think it is also because you have more of a chance of being a hero at Liverpool. We have plenty of room for improvement and a good manager will be given money with a chance to improve the squad.

Take Mourhinho for an example. If he goes to Chelsea he will be expected to win everything. And even if they do, he won't be given all the credit (anyone can win that that money, right?). If he comes to Liverpool, he will have the chance to lift us from 4th place obscurity to a contendor again. The manager that wins us our first Premiership title will become a legend that will forever be remembered by the fans.

Just a hunch but I don`t think that Benitez will join you. He as been offered a new deal by Valencia and may just be allowing the Liverpool rumours to boost his value. With Porto having won the UEFA cup last year and making the ECL final this, Valencia could emulate that next season. It would be a crazy time for him to leave Valencia. Hitzfeld would be more likely.
