I know and that's also why I don't consider him a great player either especially since he basically choked 3 times with Croatia. He couldn't even win the Nations League with them.
List the top 10 currently active/recently retired great players in your opinion, i'm fascinated to hear who that is.
Obviously Messi, Ronaldo but also Neuer, Buffon, Neymar, David Silva, Carvajal, Piqué, Iniesta, Dani Alves. Those players have more or less won everything there is to win. I'm sorry, I fail to see what's so special about Benzema and especially Modric. They aren't even in the top 10 of most trophies won by a single player and they won nothing with their national teams.
Until Kane won't quit the England national team, they won't win any trophies. This dude is so cured, that even he lost the chance with Bayern at playing in the DFL-Supercup.
Dani Alves has not won with the national team in any relevant matter. Buffon has not won the CL either. Neymar, you're surely joking. Just wanted to know before i waste my time fighting windmills.
Dani Alves won 2 Copa Americas and one Confederations Cup with Brazil, Neymar won a Confederations Cup and a Summer Olympics gold medal in 2016. That's more trophies than both Modric and Benzema won with their respective national teams combined. And while yes Buffon has not won the CL either, he won the World Cup with Italy, again something Benzema and Modric didn't do with their nations. I'm not asking you to fight windmills.
Didnt you say you don't count the confed cup? But for Neymar it matters? The Olympics tournament against U24 sides? Really? This is some really special blend.
I said I'm not counting the Nations League, please read carefully. The Olympics tournament is a tournament to win a gold medal, not exactly a tournament to win a new car or something. And I can even leave out the Olympics tournament if it makes you happy because I have several more trophies I can name when it comes to Neymar and his career so far including more trophies with Brazil than Benzema and Modric combined.
We're closing the thread tomorrow by the way. Euro is practically over and bad food attracts flies and all. Let's keep this one in good memory.
Neymar hasn't achieved half as much as Benzema, this is a complete joke, but thankfully it's an opinion that's largely exclusive to yourself. If Benzema isn't a great player, guys like Lewandowski and Haaland are barely average. You're setting some village fest parameters that have no real foundation to them and define players by that. By your standards Iker Casillas is far superior to Buffon. Like, on another stratosphere. Oliver Kahn is a legend and his biggest moment in the national team kit is fumbling the ball and Ronaldo scoring on him. Absurd take to just wash out whoever hasn't won if you think of it this way.
Neymar has won trophies and tournaments in 4 different countries including with Brazil. Lewandowski is a good Bundesliga player that's it. Him and Haaland have both won the same amount of Champions League trophies as Neymar. With that being said, Haaland is only 23, I think he will surpass Neymar AND Benzema ultimately.
He's also never been been the best player on a single club team he played for. Setting the bar for great player at the national team is comical. Sets guys like Figo, Rui Costa etc. as average. Blazing hot take. Guys like Cruyff changed the game and never won with the national team. Zico, Paolo Maldini. As I said. What a great standard. Chiellini > Maldini by that standard. Ha.
Benzema 5 times Champions League winner, top goal scorer, multiple leagues and cups in different countries, Balon d’or winner, but not quite as impressive as winning Olympic football lol
He doesn't need to be, he was surrounded by the likes of Messi and Suarez for a while. Also I'm pretty sure Santos fans would disagree that he wasn't their best player back in the day with an average of 1,6 goals per game. The thing is, nobody really expected Figo, Rui Costa, Cruyff or Maldini to necessarily win anything with their national teams. Cruyff didn't even play 50 games for the Netherlands during an 11 year period for instance. Maldini was a national team player at a time where Italy were going through a crisis period for the most part and performed shockingly bad at times. On the other hand, Benzema was one of France's main strikers during their golden generation and still won nothing with them. Arguably, France did better when he wasn't around.
Not quite as impressive as someone who has won several things with Brazil, yes. Not to mention that Benzema was a national team player during France's golden era. Brazil wasn't in its golden era when Neymar won Olympic Gold and the Confederations Cup with them.
Pretty sure Benzema wasn't part of this team mate: You sound too young to have experienced all this tbh.
I remember this team. France had several golden generations just like other nations. Big teams rarely have a single golden generation throughout their history. Without Benzema, France win a World Cup, reach the final in the subsequent World Cup and the semi-finals at this Euro. With Benzema, France never go beyond the quarter-finals of any tournament. I rest my case.
Summer Olympics in football and Confederations Cup, this is a joke. These are glorified friendlies that nobody remembers. Even best national teams tournaments cannot compare to CL, and Benzema won 5 of those. Maybe Goetze is better than Benzema as well then. I'd venture to say that Modric's silver and bronze medal with Croatia is much more impressive than a gold medal at the freaking Olympics.
