Yes it is. I haven't seen the original, but I've heard many people say it's one of the scariest movies they've ever seen.

It has an interesting premise, a cursed videotape, you watch it once, the phone rings, no one is there and you are dead within a week.

    WOW!!!

What an incredible horror movie. That's one of the best horror flicks I've seen in a LOOOOOONG time.

If you're a horror fan, I strongly encourage you to go see this movie. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't tell you the plot apart from what most already know - there's a video tape going around that if you watch, you will die seven days later.

Cool. So it's more psychological scares like Candyman?

Yeah. In fact, this is the scariest movie I've seen since Candyman.

Cool, sounds like the American version is as strong as the Japanese one. I'd be interested to hear your take on the Japanese one as well, actually, if you get the chace to watch it.

Just saw it, a complete mess of a film with so many loose ends and continuity errors that it should really suck. But it doesn't. I really enjoyed it. Its definately one of the scarier films I've ever seen.

As a joke after the film, I have two cell phones I dialed my other phone to see if it would freak out anyone after watching the movie. My son had a good laugh with it.

So did roger Ebert, who thought it was not a worthy effort at all.

Do not read further or it will give away the entire story

I thought it was scary and spooky. What I have a problem with is understanding Sarena's motivation for killing and how the video tape comes into existence in the first place.

So if I gather the story line correctly, the little girl is evil from the get go and causes her mother to throw her into the well in an act of desperation? The story line or time line doesn't clearly explain why the father put her up in the barn loft. Is it because they were freaked out by the death of the horses? or were the mother and father bad people? All of the events on the island are a result of what? The girl's psychic power? The movie never really explains the mothers motivation for the action.

So the little girls only purpose in creating the tape is to let everyone know what happened to her. If that's so why is the only copy in the cabin.

So the bottom line is if you see it and don't show someone else the tape you die, but if you do show it to someone else you'll live. I'm trying to remember if Rachel has her video pictures taken before she shows her ex the video or after.

I will say that Naomi Watts is a total piece. I thought she looked beautiful, I could not stop looking at her. Wow!

Actually, I saw it last Friday night, over a week ago. I figure since I got others to see it, I'm safe.

I haven't seen that film in years. Must be now 5-6 years maybe more. Yes it is a very good film.

Mike, I was hoping someone could clear up my confusion was the little girl evil from the get go or were her parents dysfunctional.

I think that she was evil from the get go.

I admit the plot left a lot to be desired, but I didn't judge the flick for plot. I judged it for the scary factor. ANd The Ring scared the hell out of me. :)

I got Cinema Paradiso from Netflix. I liked it so much I think I'm going to buy my own copy, but I might wait to see if the new version they released this past summer comes out on DVD.

I agree that she was evil from the start. And yes, this movie did scare the hell out of me. I have never left a theater feeling more disturbed than after The Ring.

Also, a question: Why did the father kill himself? And why by that method? Was it because the character played by Naomi thought that he killed Samara after watching the tape of Samara's interview? Or was he too haunted by her? Also, his method of suicide ... quite inventive. The water, so prominent in Samara's death, is used again, though in a highly different manner.

well....it had some really good scenes and was put together pretty good. but the story got too messy and way too much was left unexplained (why coud the kid talk to the dead girl?) plus the mystery was solved a little too neatly - like the girl walks into a library and gets a book on light towers, flips a few pages and wham! there is the light tower she saw in the tape.

I did like the premise of the film, and the dead bodies looked good, especially the first dead girl.

I wonder if Ringu was better, I hope it comes to North America if it isn't already out there somewhere.

I give the ring a 6.5 out of 10. enjoyable but didn't come close to living up to it's potential.

questions, not that it matters but....

    1) why was the girl evil? what did she do that was evil while she was living?

    2) who made the tape? why did they choose that medium? I just wished they would have explained the relevance of videotape.

    3) after she was dead, what was it that the little girl wanted to accomplish? just kill people?

    4) why did the dad kill himself? i know someone already asked that but...

alot more questions. a confusing film to say the least.

    1) She was naturally evil (I can find no other explanation). When she was alive she caused all of her mother's horses to go crazy and kill themselves. I believe she also killed the fish near the island, causing there to be a famine ... but I could be wrong on that.

    2) Samara made the tape. Remember, Samara was able to project her thoughts onto the film paper. The teenagers tried to watch their football game in the cabin directly over the well. But Samara changed the contents of the tape.

    3) She only wanted two things: to hurt people and to be heard. She made the tape in order to hurt people and to be heard. She spared those who would make a copy and show others in order to spread her message further and hurt more people.

    4) Still not clear on why he killed himself

In what part of the movie did Naomi Watts make out with the brunette? ;)

Yes, she is hot. She looks a lot better than she did in...Tank Girl.

The only thing I remember from Tank Girl is that nightmare and freak Lori Petty. God, she is ugly.

for numbers 1-3 I wish there was more of a reason. in the movie they kept explaining and explaining and explaining the back story but never explained why she was evil - other than just because. Was Samarah the one who made the phone calls as well?

I don't think there is a reasonable explanation. Also, if Samarah has supernatural powers from the dead...why didn't she torture her father more - or make him watch the tape?

    i know an answer!!!

    3) the little girl wanted people to hear her...to hear her 'message' (you can decide what her message was)...and if you saw the movie and showed it to someone else, you were fulfilling her wish..therefore, no death for you.

this theme was also obvious between rachel and her son....bluntly talked about in the beginning scene at the freaky little kid's school.

man. this movie scared the *************** out of me.

From what I could get out of it was that the father had the tape first, put it at Shelter Mountain, therefore other people could see it, and he was spared. Then when Naomi Watts was onto it, he felt guilty and killed himself. And she was evil from the get go and was never the daughter they wanted her to be.

best part of the movie is when the son gets up in bed and says "What do you mean you freed her!" The rest after that was just great.
