One of John F Kennedy's main campaign points in the 1960 election was that under the Eisenhower administration the US allowed Russia to gain a massive lead in the number of nuclear armed intercontinental ballistic missiles - that they had hundreds, even thousands of them. He was actually told the truth - that the US in fact had a major advantage and Russia barely had any (we now know at the time they had 4). But he also knew that the other side couldn't counter his claim without revealing top secrets, such as how we learned what the numbers really were.

The definition of Old Fogey changes when you have to be at least 35 for the gig, and many of the old guys were as old as the medical tech of the time would allow them to be. Meaning they'd have been (even) older if folks had been living longer. Given that there have been only two u-50 presidents in my lifetime, and several in their late 60s, I'd draw the Fogey Line at 65. Carter was 52 when he won, Dubya was 54. Normally, this isn't a young age to start a new job, but when you compare with Reagan, Biden, Trump, and a host of candidates who won the nom in their 60s at least, they're pretty young.
