I'll have to find it but a few years ago, I read an interview and Clint said he used those words. He also said he did not regret the incident one bit.

So this seems to have died down. Maybe Norwich put him on timeout after his hissy fit and will bring him back in after the window closes.

The American window doesn’t close until March so there’s a lot of time left for this to still get done.

Naah, Freddy Adu is the undisputed world champion at blowing up a club career. The BS mods have banned him from consideration to give others a chance :speechless:

In terms of leaving after a massive bust-up, the stereotypical YA is a guy who's a bit limited technically but "very good in the dressing room". Apart from Josh and Clint Mathis, there just haven't been enough YA blowups to get a shortlist, never mind have a proper competition.

We got the Clint Dempsey not starting the Europa league final punching the glass out of a fire extinguisher case or a window or something.

I suspect Clint got into it from time to time with his FFC bosses.

Come on EVERYONE.. you guys have been hear for decades now. You should know these things.

Oguchi Oneywu punched out Zlatan and essentially had to leave AC Milan that day

While online from Stoke City to Barnsley, Brek Shea made an obscene gesture at fans and also posted a picture with guns - which made some people upset. His loan was terminated the next day after the gesture.

Julian Green refused to play with HSV's reserve team during his loan there. He was quickly removed from the team afterward.

Isaac Acuna was kicked off Club America's first team for showing up drunk to training the day after his birthday.

Jozy Altidore was fined (suspended?) for showing up to a Premier League game late

John Brooks was too sore to play in a Bundesliga game because of a new back tattoo. He was then benched for awhile.

Matt Miazga was fined by Vitesse for grabbing a player's "junk"

Matko Miljevic was frozen out and persona non grata at Argentinos Juniors and then bounced from Newell's Old Boys for a locker room tantrum.

I'm forever disappointed in you for omitting Clint Mathis' point-to-the-wristwatch gesture.

Edit--oh shame on me, I see it was mentioned already.

    You forgot....
In September 2023, CF Montreal terminated midfielder Matko Miljevic's $545,000 contract for violating league rules by playing in a local Quebec amateur league under the pseudonym "Matko Milojevic". Upset over lack of playing time, Miljevic, 22, played three games in the QCSL league before being banned for life for fighting, specifically punching an opponent

I didn't forget it. I was only including abroad clubs (which this board has never included Canadian MLS teams).

The question above was in relation to Josh Sargent and "Is he the most high profile Yank to have such a blowout with their club abroad?"

    Hannover 96 is abroad (Mathis).

And, oh the stories one could tell about our own Jermaine Jones….although maybe he hadn’t converted to the US yet when he had his club tantrums?

Not quite. Toronto, of course, still have until March to get this particular move done but once the English window closes, they're in the driving seat with Norwich - and with Josh too. It's not exactly rare for a club to say "this is our best and final offer, take it or leave it." and the player's club to say "we'll leave it", leaving him high and dry.

What is very rare - but not completely unknown - is for the window to close, the Norwich equivalent to hold firm on price and the Toronto then signs someone else, leaving club and player high and dry. That's costing Norwich money, yes, but they need to "reward" players who handled their transfer requests professionally - i.e. not made himself unavailable on the eve of a Cup game by text message - and to avoid setting a precedent for want-away players.

Norwich have just signed US dual nat striker Mohamed Touré from Randers, so I'd imagine Josh will, eventually, be sold but it's going to take time and IMO the final price will be closer to $26 million than $19 with the a compromise on payment methods: $20 million down and the rest in instalments should do it.

Since Sargent decided to torpedo his time at Norwich, they’ve won 5 of 6 in the league, 6 of 7 overall, and are up to 16th in the table, 7 points clear of relegation. Their new striker scored a hat-trick today.

We don’t know all the details but man, talk about completely destroying your WC chances and your rep. It’s a shame.

The 2025/2026 season was already underwhelming for Sargent but this whole blow up in January is a complete fiasco… its really a head scratcher… you’re a beloved essentially cult hero and sometimes captain at a pretty historic/substantial English club and you piss it all away..

Like.. seriously how bad could it possibly be to live in England making millions and being loved by the entirety of a city?

I don’t get it and I don’t think I ever will no matter the explanation (if we ever get one)

    Pussy-whipped.

A crude way of putting it I admit, but that's what it looks like to outsiders, whether complete or people with club connections. Nobody is putting it that way, even with euphemisms, but that's what's between the lines and when there's that much unanimity, it's more than likely to be the case.

His wife wanted out and wanted out immediately. The club said no so he went on strike and it's backfired. The Toronto move is probably going to happen, but I would be unwilling to put much money on it and I'd put zero money on his mindset if and when he does arrive.

Gotta think Norwich are letting him suffer a bit before agreeing to a move with Toronto. They need the money and the price for Josh isn't going up if he isn't playing.

What does being a beloved figure at Norwich do for him if the thinks that his career and/or family are suffering there?

He's going to get his move, and his life and career will pick right back up in Toronto. Weird time right now, but he clearly had to force this move as Norwich was not going to oblige on their own.

Personally, I wish he had gone to Germany in the summer. That seemed ideal. A lot has changed since then...

Maybe this is why he didn't. Maybe he was already wanting to go back to N America and could have even been talking to the club about it but they could get more money if he went back to the Bundesliga. He could be just an idiot but there's at least some possibility that a lot has happened behind the scenes and he hasn't spoken about it. BTW, was Norwich the team that held a forward out of a U20 WC? I may be confused about the team.

It may not be toxic but I find it a stupid take...In 40 years the only people involved who are going to give a shit about Josh are his family. He already turned down a BL transfer, reportedly because his family...

It seems his wife has already done the 'suck it up buttercup' thing for years and if you want to call a man who puts his family's welfare first pussy-whipped then thanks for letting me know to disregard your other opinons*. Amazing how often athletes get criticized for the behavior of decent, grounded human beings.

    * apologies if I'm missing satire
