I hope they overwhelm us with news.....rebrand (probably the main reason), stadium sponsor, new logo, new jersey with jersey sponsor, introduce Omar Bravo to us in the new kit......GIVE IT ALL TO US AT ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and give us some new gear to buy ASAP.
Pub crawl. Hmmmm Wouldn't Boulevard Brewing Co. make a great jersey sponsor? Of course they don't have national distribution, but still.
If Bravo's coming it'd be great to have a lot of fans there to greet him. Even if you just want to come so you can "boo this man" about the rebranding, let's show up. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHoNWwhzh3M"]YouTube - Boo This Man![/ame]
FWIW: The government website dealing with trademarks (TESS) still shows Kansas City Wizards being active. I did a search for Sporting KC, Sporting Kansas City and a search of "Kansas City Soccer" and it turned up nothing. Additionally, I searched under "Major League Soccer" as the owner and there were no new names out there registered. I'm just saying.....
Well maybe they'll just keep the name and maybe add FC or SC to give it a more "traditional" feel and introduce Omar Bravo. I remember the hoopla with Arsenal Colorado being just that.
It takes about 4-6 months for the trademark offices to respond, and about a year for it to become official.
that is for trademarks, but a domain registration can be done immediately if it is available and that is currently the case with sportingkc.com or sportingkansascity.com from what I've read on these boards.
With the recent trips to Portugal in mind, i wonder if a partnership with Sporting Lisbon will be announced ....
I would actually prefer this is not the case. From a technical standpoint it'd be fine, but if it is Sporting KC, I'd rather us make the name our own. It's a neutral enough term that I think we can own it here in the US without any immediate association to a specific club.
Some folks in Seattle are hoping that KC gets the name Sporting. From Urban Dictionary: Sporting - a gay guy tucks his wiener and all between his legs and imagines he is a girl, reminiscent of Wild Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, except without the women skin. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sporting
Perversely, I think the change will be easier to accept for the media and casual fan if there is a "logic" behind the change. Unless OnGoal have a very convincing rationale, I think they are going to go, "Huh? Why?" A partnership with Sporting Lisbon will at least be an explanation that makes some sense; especially if it was meaningful and not just something to put in a press release. Psychologically, it just makes it easier to swallow.
So I was emailed an article by MLS Rumors, with some information on a domain that was registered by MLS. I took one for the team and read the article, below is the information they found. Oh wait, I get it....Seattle fans are hoping we get "sporting" as our name, be cause based on the supplied definition it's something they all do on a regular basis....got it, thanks for the clarification!
Nice find. I think this pretty much all but guarantees the name change to SKC. Hopefully the new sponsor won't be a disappoint. Somebody mentioned earlier that Thursday is Boulevard's 21st, it would be good timing to announce this type of thing. Certainly it would make the whole 'Event' a bit easier to swallow, atleast for me it would be.
That is about as close as you can get to confirmation. That makes it about 99% certain now unless OnGoal got a taste of dissatisfaction of the name and made a last minute change which I strongly doubt. Anyone going to make some signs for Wednesday? I am thinking about it.
I'm kinda wondering why such an announcement wouldn't be scheduled as part of the MLS Championship weekend/halftime fanfare.
