"The annual number of hardcore video rentals in the US has risen from 79m in 1985 to 759m in 2001. Hardcore pornography in the shape of videos, the internet, live sex acts and cable television is now estimated to generate around $10bn, roughly the same amount as Hollywood's US box office receipts. Americans spend more money at strip clubs than at Broadway, regional theatres and orchestra performances combined. The industry has mushroomed since the 70s, when a federal study found that it was worth little more than $10m. Now the US leads the world in pornography; about 211 new films are produced every week. Los Angeles area is the centre of the film boom and many of those in the trade are otherwise respectable citizens. " "Nina Hartley, a porn star, told Schlosser: "You'd be surprised how many producers and manufacturers are Republicans." " http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,947880,00.html
And it's one of the few US products that is still popular overseas. Or at least it used to be when I worked for a freight forwarder. Those hardworking, um, ladies & gentlemen in the San Fernando Valley used to generate part of my pay check. I wonder if the Iraq war will cause an international boycott of Reseda's Finest Art?
The proliferation of VCRs and DVDs has made this industry what it is... Thank god for Larry Flint. Think of all the times Jefferson and Washington must have rolled over in their graves when the Smut King of Southern Ohio was leading the charge for First Amendmen rights.
Oh come on. I'm sure that Jefferson said many times, "Thou truly hath a bottom that cannot quit, Sally. I only wish there were some manner of recording device so I may look upon it again and again."
I have a better idea for dropping 30 bucks on the net... On the article,I'm far more embarrassed by our treatment of farm workers than I am by the level of porn consumption.
1) The Rose Bowl is just a couple exits away from the San Fernando Valley, and Victoria Street is also an easy drive from the place that is to Porn what Detroit is to cars. 2) Galaxy fans are incredibly good-looking. (Loney was the first one to point this out, but it's true.) I have to imagine that at least a few Galaxy supporters are in America's Last Remaining Industry With An Exportable Product. So when you buy Porn, you are supporting Galaxy fans, or maybe a couple of them. I'm not complaining. I'm bragging!
I have mixed feelings about porn. I’m a consumer myself, so I’m obviously contributing to this, but: it's hard to seriously argue that porn isn’t degrading to the women who "work" in that industry. Porn just seems to get nastier by the day. I’m not claiming it encourages rape or anything like that, but I still can’t help feeling partially resonsible for the way many of these women are treated in front of rolling cameras. Or maybe it’s just my Catholic guilt complex rearing its head...
I really like porn. And not the soft crap either. Anyone seen some of the Japanese stuff - boy can they think up some interesting stuff. Milk enemas - you've got to admire their imaginations.
I am taking sides on the issue since I do spend money on porno and strip clubs(Mitchell Bros anyone?). Here is an article you might want to read.. http://www.cybercollege.com/sexrsh.htm
You know, the viewpoint in that link looked pretty one-sided to me. It’s definitely the right link to use if you want to keep yourself from feeling guilty about helping to finance the porn industry. This is what it says under the section “Is pornography degrading to women?”: “If this is true, and if we don't assume a dual standard based on an archaic attitude about women or a belief that sex is degrading in itself, pornography must also be degrading to the men involved. The dual standard aspect of pornography is almost never addressed.” That notion might make sense if hard-core pornography weren’t aimed almost exclusively at a male audience, if 99 percent of the producers weren’t men and if we didn’t live in a male-dominated society. Degrading to men? Sure, whatever. You can find people with some weird fetishes. For all I know, some or most of the women involved in porno enjoy what they’re doing. I’m sure you can find women who enjoy making bukkake and gang bang videos. But I’m also sure there is tremendous pressure on these women to conform, which today means doing increasingly hard-core scenes. There was a piece on Nightline (I think it was) not long ago about the porn industry. Unfortunately I didn’t see it because we don’t get ABC over here, but I read the story at the ABC site and I can tell you it didn’t make me feel particularly proud to be a consumer of porn. Sure, ABC’s is only one side of the story, but it was definitely an opposing viewpoint to the link you posted.
Actually, here are the links to the ABC stories: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/primetime/DailyNews/porn_love_030123.html http://more.abcnews.go.com/sections/primetime/dailynews/porn_business_030128.html
Gez... I meant to write..... I am NOT taking sides on the issue.... I felt sick reading my own message.
