The Pirates Penned Sands: James Sands to St. Pauli(olf NYCFC)

Very bad luck.

 

James Sands loan to St. Pauli is over. Curious to see if he returns to NYCFC to recover from injury.

 

I'm sure its tempting for St Pauli to buy considering how well he played for them, but they need to cut payroll and he's only been healthy for 31/52 league games he was under contract for... I bet he returns to NYC for good. He's clearly a good player, but the broken leg et al. he sustained in 2025 followed by an ankle injury that required surgery in 2026 doesn't bode well for his long-term health...

So I guess the Pirates didn't pen Sands?

 

Translated to English, "we liked the guy and he was good. Unfortunately his body wasn't. This is a real bummer"

 

Pretty much.

They'd earned 12 points from the 9 games before he got injured - a run which had lifted them out of the drop zone - and got all of 2 points from the 9 games afterwards.

He may have impressed enough for another BL1 side to step in, but I'd imagine they'd want to have some proof that he's fully recovered - ankle breaks are a lot harder assess leg breaks

 

Back with New York City and today the club announced a long-term contract extension.

NYCFC is giving Sands long-term financial security, which is good. Plus, he will lead the team into its new stadium.

After 2 broken ankles, this was a logical move.

It beats going to the 2.Bundeliga with a team where he would have had to have taken a paycut to stay there. Plus, I think St. Pauli is going to struggle next year too in the second tier.

NYCFC announced today that Sands is not only rejoining NYCFC, but has signed an extension that will keep him with the club through the 29/30 season with a club option for 30/31.

Sands has one of the stranger career paths of any player I've ever followed. How many players go on multiple 18-month loans in their career, only to return to their parent club at the end of all of them?

 

Also, NYCFC is making a big deal over his extension.. That should probably indicate they're not going to look to sell him anytime soon

I don't think Sands is done with Europe. But he is likely going to have to stay in New York and show he is healthy for awhile. He needs to make everyone forget about the 2 broken ankles.

On a side note, if the USMNT is in the 2028 Copa America, Sands could be a good overage option with the Olympic team. That team will need a d-mid and a backup central defender. Sands is both - and he has a lot of top experience to bring to the table.

to be fair, NYCFC is part of a weird parent organization. Remember when CFG signed Mix and then sent him on a 5 year globe-trotting tour?

 

I remember Palmer-Brown’s City-funded study abroad but I had completely forgotten that Mix did the same.

 

You think the U.S. tries to get bigger names with the fact we are hosting the Olympics?

Yes.. but it comes down to Copa America involvement.

If the USMNT is not at the Copa America, I think you get top players like Adams and Richards involved with the Olympic team. If the USMNT is at the Copa, then that becomes a lot harder.

I thought Sands should have been an overager in 2024 in place of Mihailovic. When Aiden Morris wasn't released, the team needed a physical midfielder and a back-up central defender. That role went to the age-eligible Max Dietz but Sands is a much better player than Dietz. It would have been worth using an overage spot on him..

 

St. Pauli’s longest-running podcast/ blog gave him a warm farewell. Some fans even called him their Player of the Year.

...Sands had, within a very short time, become one of the team’s most important links in defense. His numbers were never incredibly spectacular, and there were no major headlines. But somehow that fit his style of play. Sands was not a player for highlights, but for stability.

Nice. That is how I would describe his play when I tuned in to St Pauli matches.

 

He handled himself well in the Bundesliga. Secure that bag, get healthy, and have a good career. Maybe a 3rd trip to Europe could be in the horizon
