Is he good enough passer to play 10? The same goes to Bassett.

He’s a good passer. His ball control is the bigger issue than his passing. He’s halfway between the two positions I think.

Bassett is a goal scoring 8, but can be played as a 10, if need be.

Both are kind of in that 8/10 mold. Best for a formation like a 4-3-3 or diamond midfield.

I honestly never saw this kind of season happening for Bassett. I was convinced he wouldn't have the pace to excel at CM... but soccer is a funny game. Sometimes things just click for a player and the subsequent confidence can propel you to a new level.

Don't see a new level here. His numbers are slightly better than the last year, and significantly worse than let say Luna.

I didn't even mention Luna? Luna doesn't have the same pace issues and has been technically above average since his days in the USL... so always had a higher ceiling IMO... and if I had to take one on the Olympic Team it would be Luna be a country mile. But it still doesn't mean I can't give kudos to a player like Bassett for overcoming some physical limitations to place himself in contention for the Olympic Squad. He has been a very good MLS CM this season.

That's cute! WIP doesn't even know the Union exist 15+ years on.

I do think the general consensus is that they didn't do enough to improve this team.

But its not really about "investing in the team" by spending a lot of money. Philly isn't going to spend what the top spenders in the East are. That's by design.

You don't have to spend a ton, though.

RSL is in the same band of salary spending as Philly, and they're 1st in the West.

Things just seem to have stagnated.

Big difference in transfer spending though, RSL is 8th and Philly 28th ahead of only SKC

Well trotting out the corpse of Bedoya and playing super direct 100% of the time is not helping.

It was always going to be tough to maintain their level of moneyball transfers...it seems like they opted to just keep the band together instead. Long ago that Tanner was considered a top 3 GM that had optimized the roster build for this model. Seemed to be a little tension between Tanner and Curtain in the Bedoya and Wagner situations. Would Curtain leave for a team that gives him more resources? Probably not until after he gets to coach Cavan?

That is absolutely insane. Philly has sold $20 million in players. What do they even do with the money?

I know this is a Union thread, but what this says about SKC and the trend they have over the last 5 years or so is a terrible reflection on their front office, even worse than the Union IMO.

The Philly HG’s are holding up their end of the bargain. Outperforming their contracts in most cases, providing cheap depth, and bringing in transfer fees. Things that should’ve allowed Philly to swing for the fences with their other roster spots, but they just never do.

The margins in MLS are slim, extremely fine margins when talking about the Union. When you look at the 2022 version of this team and compare it to the past two seasons.... There are seemingly minor tweaks and changes that had very profound effects. That 2022 team was locked in the entire season, everyone was healthy (until the final and Bedoya was injured). That midfield was 3/4 defensive. Flach is extremely underappreciated by Union fans. He's at an elite level for MLS in defensive actions and ground covered. He allows Jose Martinez to be Jose Martinez. Bedoya, because of his two way play allows the RB to get forward more. Because of Flach on the other side, Wagner was able to get into the attack on a regular basis. That team didn't give up many clear looks at goal, let alone half chances.

Last season, Flach picked up an injury in the first game that hampered him when he did play, and ultimately ended his season early. McGlynn took his spot eventually. While he's improved defensively, and is far better going forward than Flach..... him being out there forces Wagner to stay at home. Bedoya picked up injuries last season. Now there's a different MF on his side as well. Martinez can't be himself, and when he takes chances and those chances aren';t pulled off.... Flach and Bedoya weren't there to clean things up.

Fast forward to this season. With Quinn and Jack in MF the outside backs have to stay home more often than not to help provide defensive cover. Jack and Quinn are more adept at attacking then defending. They've both improved at defending but they aren't at the level of Flach and Bedoya yet (if they ever will be at that level). They don't instinctively rotate back when the overlapping fullback charges forward.

IMO, Glesnes is still not 100% healed from his sports hernia surgery. Because of this, Elliot's shortcomings are more pronounced now, and then when you add in not having Flach and Bedoya in MF..... Martinez has to do ALL of the heavy defensive midfield lifting.

When you look at the goals they've conceded, they're all either off of a self inflicted mistake, or the other team is hitting a banger. Sometimes that's just the way it goes. And this season, particularly at home, they just can't capitalize on the breaks that they do get, and all of the bounces seem to hit for the opposition. If they have a 500 record at home this season, IMO the level of concern would be minimal in comparison.

I agree they've missed on some signings. There's also some signings where the jury is still out on. There's also some holes on the roster that are glaring. Both of which are magnified right now with the imminent sale/departure of Carranza and Gazdag being away at the Euro's with Hungary. The brutal truth is that the Union can't honestly believe that Donovan can fill in for a striker who's going to a UEFA CL team. Same goes for running out Raffanello to fill in for Gazdag. That's two players who are among the best at their positions in MLS, and the Union are trying to fill in for them using two players who are USL Championship quality.

The Union was fully prepared and expecting to sell Carranza this past offseason, but Carranza's camp turned down the offers. That effectively significantly altered the Union's transfer plans. The summer window isn't a realistic place to expect them to add a player or two that will help them this season. Particularly if they come from Europe. Realistically by the time that p[layer is available there's maybe 8-9 games left in the season.

As for Wagner, they tried to sign Lund as his replacement. Lund ultimately ended up at Palermo instead. Wagner is still one of the best LB's in MLS. He's now paid as such as well. The Union have some decisions to make on their roster. They need to figure out the centerbacks going forward. They should resign Leon Flach, though I'm sure he'll have offers from Bundesliga teams. They need to find another goalscorer to partner with Uhre, especially if Baribo doesn't work out. They have two young homegrowns who will likely be Gazdag's backups next season (possibly later this season) (Vasquez and Cavan). IMO, things look far worse than they actually are. It'd be more worrisome if they were getting the breaks beating off of them every game.

The roster needs a few tweaks, and they need to spend some money on another striker.

I’m thinking for Vazquez than Cavan Sullivan but I guess it’s a possibility.

Vasquez for sure, he was on the bench Saturday Night. Maybe CJ Olney gets a call up?

What are the odds Frankie Westfield makes it to Penn? Seems like he could have a pro contract right now if he wanted it, but I would assume he would accept an MLS contract.

This is like when Dallas lost to Solar in the playoffs. Eeeek! That hurts. Local bragging rights forfeited for a year.
