Coote's remarks re Klopp were both derogatory and xenophobic which I assume would violate the high standards and integrity the refs are supposed to uphold. Once he's spoken the words out loud on camera I think he's sealed his fate.
But he didn’t, did he? Say immigrants? Yes, wrong on Jurgen, yes wrong across the board, but at the end of the day, he’s a ref, not the Prime Minister or Archbishop of Canterbury or even the Prince Of Wales. The bottom line is that, like so many others who’ve been caught being out of line on social media, he’ll be fired. (Then Farage, Aaron Banks or the Tories will hire him).
He didn't, but my point was if you're going to punish denegrating one group of people, then you should hold denigrating every group of people to the same standard
But where does that stop? A manager calling a player a fat bastard after a summer off? Furthermore most people caught denigrating various groups, minority or otherwise, usually pay for that transgression with their jobs. The company says, we don’t want to employ you here anymore, it’s bad for our business. Fair enough, a corporate decision. But who decides that fining someone is fair? Fines are a punitive punishment usually codified in law. You can’t suddenly decide to fine all people wearing red hats in the supermarket. If you do, why is £100 a fair fine, £105 too much and £90 not enough? Who makes those decisions? Would it be fair to fine Coote £15m? If yes, why? And if no, why? What if you’re in the right, mistaken identity, etc.? How do you appeal? What happens if you don’t pay? What happens if you do? Where does that money go to? Who oversees it? Are fines spent lining someone’s pocket? And if they’re donated to a charity, why was that charity chosen? It’s part of employment law in most countries that fining individuals at work is usually illegal or otherwise very strictly regulated. It’s waaaaaaay, way easier to say, “you f.ucked up, you’re fired”, and be done with it.
Thats the problem, isnt it?? Once the UK government decided to punish one form of speech and call it a hate-crime, they kinda dug themselves a hole, because they really should start punishing all hate-speech. But we all know they dont, and I dont expect Coote to get charged with violating hate-speech laws either
He should be fired for 1) clearly being biased, and 2) being a terrible referee. We don't have to get much past that.
Scenario: - an international ref is caught on video with a friend who says “we hate the English, they’re all c*nts” - the ref goes along with it, no disagreement - England are in a World Cup game - that ref is assigned to the game That would go down well wouldn't it? No need for anyone get worked up about it.
This is the key. A central pillar to his job is the perception of impartiality. If that's gone he can;t do his job. And this video blows that up so he can't ref that simple. I realize it was a mistake and I'm not a ghoul who relishes on calling for a mans career to be ended but he committed a cardinal sin when it comes to his profession. If the tape is real then he has to go and we can all move on. BUT if it is true that the PGMOL knew about it and did this weird shadow ban then that's so much worse. It is understandable that an individual shows a complete lack of judgement and puts himself in that position. But for the entire organization to make such a poor choice is unforgivable. And this isn't the first time the PGMOL has shown more interest in protecting the refs than in good governance. I said it last year and am now even more convinced the PGMOL needs to go and people outside the English reffing fraternity need to be in charge.
good to see the PM of Football (Neville) is taking this seriously, and is setting the bar for refs so sensibly high. get to fukk Neville. "He's called Jurgen Klopp the C-word, which is obviously an aggressive word, but I didn't see anything within his words that he had influenced Liverpool in the wrong way or was trying to do Liverpool over." Neville continued to say that he doesn't believe the referee should lose his job over his recent comments about Liverpool and Klopp. "I don't feel like he should lose his career and lose everything he has worked his entire life for. I don't feel he has crossed that line, that line I feel he would've crossed if he said 'I'm not going to give Liverpool another decision again."
There is a severe problem with having a body of import to any association become its own association and manage itself. It will inevitable vampirize itself..... This should be taken back under bureaucratic committee control by the English FA. Cities, for example, don't allow bus drivers to administratively run and police themselves
This is so predictable. Focus the narrative on the name calling instead of the "we hate scousers" comment which is the real issue. By making it about name calling you allow a bunch of false equivalences about how Jurgen surely called him names too, and even bringing in the dreaded "woke" word which allows a bunch of proper football men to claim the games too sensitive. This is clearly the strategy. My guess is he sits for a few weeks and is quietly reintroduced getting another shadow ban from Liverpool matches for a while until they deem that enough time has passed. AND again the biggest priority seems to be protecting the ref instead of protecting the game.
He may well (most likely he is right) be right, and Coote didn't ever consciously try to screw an LFC team, his semi-unconscious biases aside. The problem is that optically, for the public, not the rarefied commentators like Gary, there are the optics of this now hanging in bloody Damocles fashion, and you can't get the public eye away from them. They've re-christened the Monty Python parrot Lazarus and he can no longer pretend to be a dead parrot and that's the nub and the rub of it.... And there's no amount of nubbing or rubbing this out of problem sight.... very stupido man.....
I'd plumb for sticking his ass in the Championship. Solves all problems. yer not taking away his livelihood for having opinions that he has a right to have, etc And you obviate the prima facie issue And It also still teaches a lesson- I hate the idea of cancelling anyone for practically 99.93% of what the average uber-woke twerp thinks is a reasonable notion to publicly demand in response to freely individually held values - but in a world of a gazillion camera-phones people need to be a bit more than just circumspectly sensible about making videos when they are employed in highly sensitive positions. Slagging off entire cities and european countries may well be your right (when it is not some kind of call to violence), but one wouldn't expect the ambassador to Italy to be slagging off Italy, etc
Coote is just finished.... New video of him snorting cocaine during Euro 2024. Yes - he's clearly a drug addict and has issues. But he still needs to be fired.
OH - IT'S 100x WORSE: https://xcancel.com/stokeyyg2/status/1856799390620680326?s=46 (at your own peril)
Doesn’t look good for the fool. But I noted the report came from the Sun. Perhaps he’ll get a job offer from them as a pundit
The PGMOL has confirmed it is aware of a new video which appears to show suspended Premier League referee David Coote snorting a white powder while reportedly working at Euro 2024 last summer. https://www.skysports.com/football/...ring-to-show-suspended-premier-league-referee
Referees' body PGMOL says it is taking new allegations around Premier League official David Coote "very seriously". Coote is suspended from his role pending an investigation into a video which emerged earlier this week, in which the 42-year-old appeared to make disparaging remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. On Wednesday the Sun newspaper published pictures it says were taken during this summer's European Championship, alleging they appear to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled up US bank note. Coote was working at the Euros in his capacity as a match official. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c9qledpz2x0o
