Yeah I mean if these players are good enough then they will play but personally I’d like the rule to be for English qualified only. I’m sorry to be selfish about this but my interest is in the English National team and not anyone else in this regard.
Totally agree. English youth academies should be for English youngsters only. Not to bring the fabregas' of this world through
The FA will probably end up doing a deal with the PL if this comes in that really benefits the PL in other ways.
Not sure what sort of deal, FA already have had their pants pulled down for years! If this rule goes through and other Countries like Germany, Spain and Italy for example all have the same rule that applies to having to have one under 21 that only qualifies for their Country then we have to do the same. None of this messing about of having someone like Mateus Mane being used as a qualified player, has to be English qualified.
I suspect that would struggle to survive court cases for discrimination on the basis of nationality. I know Rugby had those rules but it doesn’t have the money involved that football has, FIFA will have to manage domestic laws as well as in the EU European Law in managing this. I don’t think PL clubs had even heard of this proposal till this week so the backlash is probably only just starting.
Quotes below feel somewhat similar to the England youth approach to competitive matches over the last few phases. How Borussia Dortmund stopped worrying about results when overhauling their academy. Now bringing through a batch of new talent.Went to meet academy manager Paul Schaffran to talk Samuele Inacio, Luca Reggiani, Mathis Albert and more. #bvb https://t.co/xSn7FzFqdZ— Adam Bate (@ghostgoal) April 28, 2026
Will stick this in this thread as it’s kind of relevant. Found it ironic this morning listening to Ally McCoist moaning that Rangers didn’t have a single Scotsman start for them yesterday when in the Premier League this happens and has been happening for years with certain teams not playing a single Englishman but hardly any complaints and certainly not heard any concerns from pundits on TalkSPORT but when it’s Scotland all of a sudden it’s a ‘ Big deal ‘
Pretty sure it was talked about a lot when it first happened. I think it was Chelseas that first did it to loud opprobrium. And was this not the motivation for the home grown rule?
I dunno, I don’t recall much noise being mentioned but I could be wrong. I mean you do see some media journalists from time to time mentioning the amount of English players starting per week but not sure I’ve ever seen anyone say it’s a big deal like McCoist did. These days it’s considered good for the English game to have so many foreigners and most Clubs fans couldn’t care less if there was no English players whatsoever.

For a league that also isn't the strongest they are very poor at giving young talent opportunity. Of course there may be questions asked about the level of talent but I still reckon there should be enough produced by Celtic/Rangers even to get more through. Hearts for all their investment and talk also weren't willing to trust James Wilson more.

Well at least it’s only another couple of games before one of the most wasted seasons of any player I can remember in the circumstances where he was Englands player of the tournament in a U21 Euro winning campaign to only make a move to be a bib carrier at best. Harvey Elliot hopefully leaves Liverpool for good this summer, he absolutely can’t afford to have another season like this one, just awful decision making all round. I actually can’t believe I listened to Darren Bent talk about this very subject on Elliot and defend the move saying it was a good move even with all the stipulations involved. Absolutely blew my mind…..
He should really be looking to head abroad, he is just not that suited to the premier league. He's a very talented player but it's simply a very difficult league to thrive in without athleticism, and most teams do not accommodate for players like him. I expect the price expectations for him will mean he ends up at a mid to lower level premier league side though.
I find it quite uncanny how layman’s like us can see failed moves even before a player has kicked a ball ( in this case Elliot ) when obviously staff involved at these clubs can’t. He should have gone to Leipzig last season when he had the chance but that didn’t materialise for whatever reason and ended up in a desperation move to Villa that was doomed to fail just because of the ridiculous clauses involved for a start.
This is bleak. pic.twitter.com/pX1B41YgFD— Mat Kendrick (@MatKendrick) May 16, 2026 I tend to agree with the overall criticism but hearing that from someone at Wolves of all clubs is comical lmao. They have shown basically zero willigness to integrate anyone from their academy prior to Mane and even when they were confirmed to be going down they still don´t play other academy players. If Wolves hadn´t been so bad this season I´m sure Mane´d still be playing u21 too. Pathway also matters and is one of the main selling points for those "smaller" clubs yet Wolves have consitently been horrible in that regard. Many of their (online) fans are also really weird in this regard and constantly moan about their supposed lack of talent or outright insult their academy players when given a chance and hope to see them fail (see Chiwome; btw what´s happened to him? Still injured?). Really, really weid behaviour and I´ve started to dislike the club even more then Liverpool. Glad they´ve gone down and it would usually be the best chance to integrate more of their own but I´m really doubtful with this club. If I had a talented boy in the Wolves academy I´d also advise him to go to a club like City/Chelsea who at least seem to have some sort of pathway or plans with their academy players and good access to the loan system. Ironically, I think this Greenwood guy who left them for Chelsea now has a better chance of a somewhat decent career in contrast to staying at Wolves. BTW is the gk he´s talking about Zach Trinder? I suppose it is
Wolves failing to integrate Gibbs White into a regularly Premier League starter is one of the biggest embarrassments of any PL clubs in my opinion. Biggest talent to come through there academy in about 40 odd years and they only managed to give him 12 PL starts.
Academy football is obviously in dire need of reform but I suspect it's the insufficient compensation these clubs are bothered about rather than the actual loss of the players. They probably just want more money to reinvest in more "ready" senior talent. Even if you change the system and increase the compensation structure players are going to want to leave if the opportunities aren't there. Some of these clubs would retain more talent under the current system if they offered more opportunities.
JJ Gabriel’s Dad needs to stay off social media. Some of his takes are a bit out there. CHO dominated youth football because he was physically early developed is one. I’ve never heard that one before. CHO was the most versatile attacking option I’ve seen at youth level. Could play about five different roles. Technique, vision and end product. Probably struggled a bit tactically when moving to senior level. Then got all the injuries.
