With them included, we pretty much have a starting 11 plus subs missing from match day squads.
Really significant and shows our strength in depth too that we can miss all them players and still field a world class team.

We can’t really include players who are injury prone but are currently fit and playing.

You can only include players that are playing but add caveats for context. It does feel like we have quite a few injured at the moment but you'd have to research if it's more than average.

We are in a new era though, last night AC Milan started with more English players than some Premier League sides do. They brought English developed and former England youth international Yunus Musah on from the bench as well. In the Premier League dual nationals declaring for other nations is also bringing down the numbers. It would be interesting to see this week's numbers if you included defected duals.

Second teams would never be approved here. We have a much stronger lower leagues with clubs with tens of thousands fans several leagues below the PL.

I’m not saying they would be, nor am I suggesting they should be. I’m just pointing out that the loan system is not to be relied upon like we do currently.

The issue is what else. Mandatory playing time for youth in the PL? Can’t see the clubs being keen to agree to that and it would make the players targets for their fans if they didn’t perform well but were required to play because of rules.

The EPPP for a start. The top young players being hoarded by the clubs who can offer them the least game time is what leads to excessive loans in the first place.

True but equally the EPPP has helped the development of players in terms of getting the best coaches and support staff.

It has its positives but combined with Brexit regulations the level of talent hoarding by big clubs has goten way out of hand and is now clearly going to become/is already becoming a massive issue for youth development in this country.

There should really be caps on how many players can be in academies. It'd be one way to stop the hoarding. Chelsea for example have a 26 man under 18 squad, and a further 24 in their under 21 squad. That's not even including anyone out on loan, or that their premier league 2 teams usually involve players from their bloated first team squad. It's a truly absurd amount to have between the groups, there's really no justification for it - its really just factory farming of the academy system to help with financial fair play.

It’s genuinely disgraceful and there’s a real inhumane element to treating young players like assets for profit like that.
