Only 7 English players played in Serie A in the 1980s and most of those players on lasted 1-2 years. So I still content not a lot of English players travel abroad especially long term. Even before Jadon Sancho played for Borussia Dortmund only 6 English players had played in the Bundesliga in 40 years. Even when likes of the Bundesliga were paying more the English football leagues 30- 40 years it was still rare for English players to travel abroad. In the 80s there could be only 2 foreigners per team, so that number is not THAT low as it seems. But my point was that Italian players suddenly started to go abroad when various factors have forced them to. This can happen to English players too.
Of course English players will always play abroad but I feel it will continue to be the exception rather than the norm. This is for a variety of reasons regardless of the availability of good playing opportunities or potential better pay overseas. Playing in any football league outside of the Premier League is seen as step down for English players. Going to be interesting to see who replaces Conte. Long term there is a few options that require games/pathway needs.
Worth mentioning now and again that the English Premier League is the most watched, most lucrative, and best top to bottom league in the world, so why would an English player want to leave But leaving to the right teams can provide a pathway back to the elite teams in the Pl or a learning experience or a nice career for those not quite at that level. And to close and piss many off, why would you want to over quota English players and become a lesser League than present, seems a fairly good balance at this time.
NASL I had a lot of English and other British players. Not as many have played in MLS. Quite a few played at US colleges and universities. I think it's an option, as is USL.
The league becoming a 'lesser league' is a problem for the shareholders - not me. At present I think it's quite a soulless product.
Apparently Charlie Setford is available on a free transfer this summer with Everton, Dortmund and Spurs after him. It would be nice to see him come to England but Dortmund have been excellent at playing young English players in recent years.
In terms of ensuring him for england, getting him in england would be good. We seem to disproportionately struggle when duels play abroad. Where was he for the last squad however, is he injured? Though the 04's certainly aren't anything near the most talented groups we've had in recent years, they have a very strong set of keepers.
I think he is injured. He missed Ajax II’s last game before the international break after being the regular keeper before then. Worth noting that he missed a year of football recently dealing with a complicated wrist injury so his progress with both Ajax and England has been hampered significantly.

Brexit has significantly given more opportunities to home-grown u18s.However some of the quality at the top clubs, is simply not there. If Europeans were allowed to join at 16. The clubs would be buying 4-6 each season— TheSecretScout (@TheSecretScout_) March 11, 2023 The secret Scout posted earlier this month he is worried about the quality in the under 18’s teams across the entire English academy system.
Yeah, I saw him post this also but not sure why it would take having more foreign kids to improve the standard of our kids at U18 level and blocking their pathway. Surely it’s down to the coaching if it’s a problem and all the Clubs should be addressing this.
The "top clubs" want more high quality prospects in the academy than they'd ever actually promote because it's a numbers game for them. Buying 4-6 16 year olds a season... 0-1 would ever see noteworthy first team minutes, closer to the former. Brexit is doing young EU players a favour by making sure they don't waste their important transitional years over here. And it means those 0-1 opportunities are more likely to go to an actual homegrown player.
Plus they won’t be many that arrive at 18 that will count for homegrown status. Some still will like 18 year old USA goalkeeper Slonina at Chelsea and I think Chelsea and Man United have both brought players who will arrive at 18 exactly. (Even if they don’t get a visa straight away registration counts for homegrown purposes.)
Good point. I remember when Spanish football was at it's peak and Liverpool bought a bunch of Spanish players for the u18s reserves like Pacheco, Suso, Canos. None of them made it at the club.

Incredible amounts being spent now on youth players, where there is no guarantee that they will even make the first team - but it’s worth the risk.As it can cost them even more later, as it proved with Enzo https://t.co/H7ucNag9GM— TheSecretScout (@TheSecretScout_) April 2, 2023 He can’t even play in the UK until summer 2025 as he is still 15. But I suspect that is the future for Chelsea/Man United/Man City/Newcastle.
Quite fascinating to see the praise the coach heaps on Steele. Few would have expected him to become a PL starter. Wonder if he could make an England squad. 🎙️ Roberto De Zerbi on Jason Steele: “For me… I don't know if there is another keeper in Europe so good, so smart to understand the line pass, to understand the opponent's pressure, and he is playing fantastically," [via @RichieMills2] #bhafc pic.twitter.com/ZU89UiuP8v— Brighton Bubble (@BrightonBubble) April 5, 2023
Scotland are after him and I suspect are more likely to get him as he would make their squad by right rather than only being called up if any of Pickford/Pope/Ramsdale/maybe Henderson are injured. I don’t see Southgate dropping anyone to call him up or having four goalkeepers at any camp - even with the possibility that because of a possible transfer embargo Pickford might end up having to play in the championship next season if Everton go down,
He’s going to be 33 soon. So I’m not sure being called up to be a squad player for Scotland will be that enticing. Unless they guarantee him a starting role (probably already done that with Gunn). I was more talking about his amazing career trajectory anyway because it looked like his career as a starter at any level was completely over.
If Scotland make the euros just going there as a squad option would be enticing. It is a remarkable comeback especially as Sanchez was in Spain’s squad for the World Cup and has been linked with big clubs and didn’t suffer any injury. He was in the GB Olympic squad and I remember reading he was only player who didn’t play a minute as all the outfield players did.
