If going by my media feed leading up to the Winter Olys, the only event was the women's downhill, and the only competitor was Vonn.
Which is crazy since Shiffrin is the Messi of the Mountains. You'd be forgiven if you didn't even know she was in Italy.
My parents were skiers, and living in Boulder at the time (Denver being the original host) so they had a lot of excitement. They both talked Franz Klammer for years and years. I knew about how amazing that gold was before I ever saw it.
Well, my point was more that Vonn is a media person and also has a compelling story (retired, returned, injured in the lead up, can she make it?), so it is not really surprising there was a lot of coverage. On top of the history of the downhill having big personalities (both men and women) on the US team for a long, long time. I've always looked at stuff like that as irritating, but in the end more of a "I know this shit, and you don't" type of event/coverage. Like back in the day, I used to be able to rattle off ski jumpers and know who was the best, name the injured person not competing, etc.
My wife and I agreed in not wanting to be dicks about this, but was that update on the Guthrie kidnapping really worthy of a special report? How many other kidnappings get an eighth of this coverage? I know, I know, but shit.
Norwegian biathlete tells world he cheated on his GF, realizes his mistake and wants her back. Many commenters - "A bronze ain't getting her back, dude" Put this in the post-race interview hall of fame.Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid throws a Hail Mary and asks for his girlfriend, whom he was unfaithful to, to take him back after winning Olympic bronze in the men's 20km interval start. https://t.co/XjsJtVDplF— Marley Dickinson (@marleydickinson) February 10, 2026
French biathlete guilty of fraud wins Olympic gold while scammed teammate comes 80th Julia Simon holds finger to lips as she crosses line Simon found to have spent €2,000 on rival’s credit card ... Simon was also found to have used the card details of the team physiotherapist to make purchases between 2021 and 2022. She denied the crime for three years, claiming she had been a victim of identity theft, before finally admitting her guilt in a court hearing in Albertville last October after she was found to have photos of the credit card on her phone. “I confess the accusations but I don’t remember committing them,” she said at the time. “It’s like a blackout.” ....................... So, I was good at sports, and my son is good at sports, but at some point, the people that get the best at sports are good at it because they're the biggest a-holes.
The options for viewing on Peacock are vast and you can easily avoid the vapid presentation. You can choose the "venue view" which has only crowd noise and uses the global feed; you can watch replays of entire events that interest you while easily avoiding results being spoiled. It's great. Same with Paris 2024.
Team luge relay thingy was cool today I enjoy the snowboard & ski tricks. But ya see one 720 or 1080, ya seen em all.
I am remarkably blase about some of those events - or rather, have become so over time. Those are remarkable skills on display in something like Big Air, but having seen similar displays over the years I am a bit inured to awe about them.
I have no commercials on the replay and access to all of it. Worth the sub-$20 fee for the month I need it (and got me the Super Bowl to boot).
