i watched that game with two of my friends who think Messi is the greatest ever and they were raving about him being inhuman/alien etc.

i disagree completely. i think he has too many failures, they think he's an individual in a team game so you can't judge him on team honours, Higuaín is why he doesn't have another world cup etc. they also think Gabriel is elite for reference.

anyway, not the greatest for me and if you're going to let him advance unmarked and shoot freely of course he'll score.

thought Algeria were exceptionally poor defensively. the third goal especially highlights how much the Algerian defence struggled with object permanence with Messi.

"if i turn away and don't look at him then he's not there"

I agree with your assessment of the match. I expected a lot more from Algeria. Their front four are actually pretty good [promising]. Their defense on the other hand...

Just a side note, I dont rate Rodrigo De Paul. If I hated players, he'd be on the list. But that pass for Messi's first goal was quality. I know there pro's so this should be expected at a WC, but that line breaking pass, that never bounces or bobbles off the ground, to this back foot, is just ********ing quality.

And if they win the group they’ll most likely get an easier 3rd place team (8 of which qualify for knockouts)

Actually winner/second of this group plays second/winner of the Spain/Uruguay group.

Tuanzebe & AWB now for Congo against Bruno & Dalot's Portugal. Tuanzebe marking Ronaldo will be interesting

Lot of passing without creating many chances by Portugal and now Wissa ties it up from a corner kick right on half time...

Think no body mentioned, Messi should have sent red. Bad start for Portugal.

I don't know why I get excited to watch Portugal play in these tournaments. Every time I set time aside, and they always suck

How do they know that already if the top 8 3rd place teams make it through?

Not every first place team plays a 3rd place team in R32:

Thanks, and weird. I thought it would be seeded, not just predetermined.

England seem to start every tournament this way.

How does a player get space and time on the ball, 10 yards outside your box, if 11 players are all behind the ball?

Worst English defense in a while, midfield is fine but not balanced.

England defense looking disorganized. They needed Harry to sort those thing out.

Lack of ability rather than lack of experience.
