The timing is perfect so, sorry Liz, it's funny. 🚨 NEW: Liz Truss storms off stage and announces ‘that’s not funny’ after noticing Led By Donkeys’ bannerpic.twitter.com/5paJlcPv6q https://t.co/kvad80d0UX— Politics UK (@PolitlcsUK) August 13, 2024
Has anyone remembered that the Tory leadership contest is ongoing? Doesn't really seem that important to most people.
Rafael Behr says as much in the grainiad but, as he points out, the leader of the opposition always has a role in how well run the country is and in how the tories develop as a party... The next Conservative leader will face a vital decision. Let’s call it the ‘rivers of blood’ test Decades after Ted Heath sacked Enoch Powell, the Tories must restore the line that stops immigration policy descending into racial hatred Of course, the other thing is that, as te phrase has it, labour support is a mile wide but only an inch deep. We gained an enormous number of seats because in the same way that the anti-tory vote is normally split between labour, the Libdems and greens, the tory vote was split between them and reform. If we don't do a decent job of managing the country, (particularly in getting some growth going), and the tories get their act together with a credible leader, we could find ourselves out of office quicker than one would have thought.
Yes, Labour's lead is relatively soft for such a large majority, but I really don't see the Tories recovering quickly under any of the candidates. They didn't lose because they were seen as too soft or too hard on anything, all post-election polling showed they lost because they were seen as incompetent. That takes time to rebuild from, especially as it will be difficult for the Libs to screw up much as the third party, and their performance hurt the Tories as much as Labour's did.
I think it depends what happens with reform as well. If their voters get it through their thick heads, (a big ask.. I grant you), that they can't win in the majority of the constituencies they might recover more quickly. If not then they're out of power for a generation.
Still trying to chase reform voters unicorns. In the real world however, from a tory mp too. My new piece has interactive maps of data from the election. It's striking that we now have two different party systems in England. Looking at top two vote shares Labour and Lib dems rarely fight each other: 306 Con v Lab seats84 Con v Lib Dem seats8 Lab v Lib Dem seats— Neil O'Brien (@NeilDotObrien) August 14, 2024
The thing is there are still some relatively decent tory MP's and, by that, I mean not only not certifiably mad but also decent people. I thought that having caught a couple of YT's over the past few days, more or less randonmy,... I mean, they're still tories, obviously but... they seem to be normal people. Just people with whom I disagree.
They're relating this to brexit but I can't help thinking it's just more to do with the basic approach of modern British business and finance... not brexit as such. Of course, that's nothing to do with whether it was a great idea or not, (not, as it happens). This guy says he knows something about finance. Maybe he's right?
I'm lucky to have managed to catch a very educational YT involving Douglas Murray who is, (and I want to be very clear about this), NOT in ANY way fascisty and who explains to us all that there isn't a far-right in the UK and the recent riots were just a few trouble-makers. Also it turns out the people marching against them were just doing it for money... Who knew Speaking as a working class bloke I have to say, thank god we have Douglas Murray as our mouthpiece.
A great quote from Iain Banks:“I’m not arguing there are no decent people in the Tory party but they're like sweetcorn in a turd; technically they kept their integrity but they're still embedded in shit”— Jon Jones (@JonJonesSnr) September 7, 2020
Some people are getting very worried. Dan Wootton and David Vance have posted the exact same. For those asking, this is about as effective a legal strategy as a bank robber donning a t-shirt reading “I AM NOT DISHONESTLY APPROPRIATING PROPERTY BELONGING TO ANOTHER WITH THE INTENTION OF PERMANENTLY DEPRIVING THE OTHER OF IT.” pic.twitter.com/krezIqRqWd— The Secret Barrister (@BarristerSecret) August 19, 2024

What did they expect of a nation that wanted to named it's most famous vessel, 'Boaty McBoatface' but were denied by 'teh man'.
Didn't Pulp do a song about this sort of thing? "I grew up in a middle class family.. But I became working class when I was working in McDonalds"- Conservative party leadership candidate Kemi Badenoch pic.twitter.com/anQv1MJDmT— Farrukh (@implausibleblog) September 17, 2024
