Black, yes. African, no. LOL. Her dad is Jamaican and while his ancestors were slaves from Africa, they are generally considered different from African-Americans due to the intermediate stop in Jamaica.
John Crace and I seem to think alike... Finding Labour a bit dull? Fear not, the Tory fun factory is gearing up again And the best news is, the leadership contenders can no longer do any harm to anyone but themselves Go on. Admit it. There’s a small part of you that’s missed the psychodramas. Not necessarily the existential angst of lying in bed each night wondering what fresh hell the government was going to unleash on us the following day. But certainly the infighting. For the last five years or so, watching the Tories implode with little help from the opposition parties had become one of the country’s favourite spectator sports. The general election had put an end to that. Most of us had forgotten what serious government looked like. Ministers going about their business in a calm and capable manner. No major crises. No meltdowns. Even seven Labour MPs losing the whip over the two-child benefit cap blew over in a matter of 24 hours. Hardly a ripple. It does seem a bit odd... not to have to worry about whether a cabinet minister will declare the Isle of Wight a gerbil free zone or that we all have to refer to the BBC as the forces of fascism or some damn nonsense but, yeah... it IS a tad... well, boring
Well her father's black, no? Think of the dual-nationality/ethnicity people you know. Apart from those with a black parent who look black, how many of them say they're from their mother's nationality? Harris has spent her entire political life playing up her black American side, to the extent of going to Howard instead of Stanford (where her father was a tenured professor). The Indian side got pretty short shrift. That's only sensible for a minority who's trying to climb the political ladder. Indian-American immigration was a drop in the bucket until the 90s and there are still 10 times as many African-Americans. Imagine a 1950s catholic trying to get ahead in WASP America who has an Irish father and a Lithuanian mother. It'd have been pretty self-defeating for him or her to run as a Lithuanian-American.
Historically there was the racist one drop theory that would say people with black ancestry are automatically black, that plays into the unique way the USA thinks about what being black is. And yes, if Indian Americans were 12% of the US population and blacks less than 1% you would hear more about Harris Indian background, as it would be more politically advantageous.
Any politician, from any party, who likens a national economy to a household budget should no longer be allowed to hold any sort of office. Fallen into a timewarp and ended up back in 2010. Government spending is a household budget once more pic.twitter.com/CSTp5TFW9M— Duncan Robinson (@duncanrobinson) July 29, 2024
In terms of day to day budget it's just a metaphor for the rubes and, on that basis, it works. That's always been the case. But they've also said that there has to be cuts for unfunded spending on projects the tories announced but without detailing where the money was going to come from. TBH most of what we heard today was for the money markets, from whom we borrow, and to pin the few tax rises on the well off onto the tories. The only thing I wasn't happy about was the cut in the winter fuel payment but, y'know... there's a reason for that
So after the horrific stabbings in Southport, the far right gatecrash a vigil for the victims to protest at a mosque (even though the alleged perpetrator is of Rwandan descent, a majority Christian country) and it turns into riots, with a police car set on fire. Fortunately, one knuckle dragger was caught on film receiving triple karma via "friendly" fire. *INCOMING*Take that you far right caant@mickormikew @GeorgieGirlLvp pic.twitter.com/sBClLrbQ0L— The Fred Flunk (@fredflunk) July 30, 2024 Alternative version https://t.co/gquyCwTp3g pic.twitter.com/Rv5lwPWjuP— Andy Ha (@AndyHa_) July 30, 2024
Social media is one of the worst things I've seen in my life time. Dangerous conspiracy theories spread like wildfire. There was no evidence that these awful killings had anything to do with Islamic extremism but due to social media spreading nonsense that this guy was a Syrian refugee the mosque in Southport gets attacked. groups like the EDL are utter scum, lowest of the low.
In the aftermath there are always good people who come to the fore. This is the sort of community spirit that the likes of Farage simply can't understand. These are the lads from Kingswood Homes and Southport Mosque who’ve spent the afternoon working together to rebuild the wall. An amazing effort! @MENnewsdesk pic.twitter.com/GtHZwsp72X— Tom George (@TomGeorgeMEN) July 31, 2024
So after a couple of days of people with "genuine concerns" burning down community centres, breaking up gravestones to throw at mosques, looting random shops (sausage rolls and bath bombs were particularly popular), setting fire to hotels, assaulting people for walking by, and consuming vast quantities of Stella, we've quickly got to the find out stage. All while Tommy Robinson suns himself at a luxury Cyprus resort. Those who have pleaded guilty this morning to violent disorder in connection with the Sunderland riots are: Andrew Smith, 41 (Cried in court)Leanne Hodgson, 43.Josh Kellett, 29, AKA Josh MajorAll three were remanded and will be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on Sept 2— David Huntley (@davey_huntley) August 5, 2024

There was some "trouble" near me last night. The town's Mosque is about 5 minutes walk from my house, and it looks like around 20 or so coked up knuckle draggers decided to turn up to "protest". We then got a horde of kids following, likely in anticipation of some potential looting opportunities. The police were on top of it, as the shops in the area had all closed early and a couple of hundred locals were ready and waiting. The police then turned up in force, and other than a few minor scuffles when they were dispersing nothing much happened apart from one arrest for someone throwing a rock at the police. Shockingly he was found to have class A drugs on him.
An interesting and wide ranging discussion around the issues in the latest riots/protests, (they discuss the difference in the discussion), between two people who, while they look like they should be in their bedrooms doing their homework, (although maybe that's just to me ), actually talk a lot of sense... It was a very wide-ranging discussion without any real focus or direction so sometimes the points made seemed rather... well, 'incongruous', shall we say. For instance at one point the guy says that Britain had a history of taking in people from abroad and it had generally been quite successful and they mentioned the Danes and, IIRC, the Normans. Well those incidents didn't work out too well for the anglo-saxons here at that time. I mean, the Normans exterminated something like 40% of the anglo-saxon leadership, (mainly in the north of England), and the danes went around raping and pillaging so, if that's the model that's being proposed, that's not really a great sales pitch, is it But, leaving aside a few minor complaints like that it was informative and intelligent.
One would think that taking anything Andrew Tate tweets without question should really be the end of someone as a politician, even more so when it ends up stoking racist violence. 🚨 NEW: Nigel Farage says he was misled by Andrew Tate and 'other folk with big followings' into incorrectly suggesting that the man charged with the Southport killings 'was known to security services' pic.twitter.com/t5Mx9SEERv— Politics UK (@PolitlcsUK) August 6, 2024
Au contraire, I always refer to fake news websites, Russian state TV and Andrew Tate for my latest information
Great to anti racist anti fascist protests out in full force across England. Looks like far right haven't turned up yet when they were supposed to be doing over 100 riots (yes riots not protests) across England and wales.
Massive turnout in Walthamstow especially, and pretty impressive everywhere. Stan Collymore has good coverage - https://x.com/StanCollymore
