It's entirely performative, including labour's response which makes no difference anyway because they're in opposition so, bluntly, who gives a feck what they say.

Reed's woffling and prevarication is probably sensible in that sense. You're not against it, (as otherwise the tories will be able to say you're 'soft on immigration'), but you're stressing the business and other social issues such as care home staff.

Will someone actually ask the government this?

    ???

I think you'll find people already have pointed this out, tbh, and it's not just NHS but care staff as well.

Larry Elliot has a point of view on the subject of this thread...

I’ve got news for those who say Brexit is a disaster: it isn’t. That’s why rejoining is just a pipe dream
Many still hanker for how things were: but looking across the Channel, it’s completely illogical to do that

Brexit is a dead issue at Westminster. There are any number of issues where it is hard to separate Labour and the Conservatives, and the reluctance to reopen the 2016 referendum debate is one of them. As with tax and spending, Keir Starmer is broadly offering continuity Rishi Sunak.

That doesn’t mean the debate about leaving is over. Plenty of people still nurture the hope that the decision will be reversed and are working to that end. But any successful campaign would need to do two things: convince voters that the UK economy had become a basket case since the Brexit vote and that life for those still in the club was so much better.

Neither criterion has been met. Britain’s economic performance in the seven years since 2016 has been mediocre but not the full-on horror show that was prophesied by the remain camp during the weeks leading up to the referendum. The doomsday scenario – crashing house prices (falls of up to 18% could result, warned then chancellor George Osborne) and mass unemployment – never happened.

Not sure about some of the articles statistics, (although some are probably right), but the point about it being unlikely we'll be rejoining any time soon is correct I think.

I think the absolute earliest it might factor into an election is after two Labour terms with another leader running. That's assuming Starmer does the best part of a decade before handing over, and then it may form part of the successor's campaign.
More likely is probably when the Tories get back in, whenever that may be, and the Labour opposition campaign is built on it.

It'll be a myriad of negotiations on individual aspects of the relationship. At least for the next 10 years + IMO

I think it probably depends on what happens going forward and not just in economic and business terms.

When we left it was presented as the UK, administered by a right government, leaving a more left-wing Europe. But with Meloni in power in Italy, Orban in Hungary and whoever else might grab power, that gets harder to argue. More to the point if they start to implement some of the policies they've threatened how close do we really want to be to them anyway... politically I mean.

Jenrick resigns as a minister. He's a strong ally of Braverman and there's rumours he could be a stalking horse in yet another leadership contest.

Did you see her 'speech' in the house today?

It was treated like it was Churchill 'We will fight them on the beaches' when it was just a petulant child throwing a hissy fit.

    This seems right...

    It's popcorn time IMO :)

A discussion about UK politics and how labour will 'crush our enemies, see them driven before us, and hear the lamentation of their women'. Well, maybe not that last bit but the rest of it... sounds good :)

Asking such a question is considered to be in poor taste I'd think.

The BNP is alive and well on the Tory back benches.
