My question? Any of the English clubs evolved into a major club in the modern day? And if not, which is the oldest modern day power house? For example, Man Utd, Bayern Muinch, Ajax, Porto, etc.
I think Nottingham must refer to the Club now known as Notts County who were founded in 1862 and are the oldest English League Club and oldest Professional Club in the world. I did wonder why 1860 Munich wasn't an older club but according to Wikipedia it was a sports club that started playing football in 1899. Nottingham Forest were founded in 1865 and though not a major club now, were in recent memory and won the European Cup twice. Forest didn't take part in the first league championship though, but the likes of Aston Villa and Everton did among 12 teams including Notts County and the first winners Preston North End.
To the list of 10 up to 1863 you can add... 1859 Wanderers (folded 1887) 1860 Oswestry Town (merged with Total Network Solutions to be The New Saints in 2003) 1861 Crystal Palace (not the current club of that name. This club folded in 1876) Worksop Town (still playing in the Northern Premier League) 1862 Northern Nomads (folded 1984) Barmouth & Dyffryn United (still playing in the Welsh Alliance) 1863 Crusaders (London). (Folded in the 1890s) Royal Engineers. The oldest "powerhouse" teams, going by today's playing standards, look to be the two Manchester clubs, with United forming in 1878 and City in 1880. United were initially called Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway FC, while Man Cuty were formed as St Mark's, and became Ardwick FC before become Man City. Glasgow Rangers, a powerhouse in Scotland if not necessarily elsewhere, where formed in 1872.
I've heard that originally the club wasn't meant to be called Notts County. The intention was for the name to follow the form of the Notts County Cricket Club, where they also played.
That's an explanation that makes sense. I think a lot of the football clubs evolved from general sports or cricket clubs. Notts County actually play in the City of Nottingham, wheras Nottingham Forest are located just outside the City on the other side of the River Trent in West Bridgford, but the ground is called the City Ground. The Cricket ground is on the 'Forest' side of Trent Bridge. Notts County originally playing at the cricket ground would make some sense of it I guess. As an aside (and I'm not sure if I or others have mentioned it elsewhere) Juventus play in black and white because Notts County gave them their first kit wheras Nottingham Forest gave Arsenal their shirts I believe.
There are also many other "football clubs" that were formed in the years before football split into other codes. Up to 1863 there are 15 clubs that went on to take up rugby after the split, and 6 Australian Rules teams (which codified in 1859, four years before association football) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldest_football_clubs
FC Porto is one of the oldest non British clubs. It was founded in 1893 according to the official FC Porto website: http://www.fcporto.pt/English/Club/history.asp
Here’s the top 10 oldest clubs currently playing in the Premier League: 1. Stoke City Football Club Founded 1863 in Stoke-on-Trent, England 2. The oldest still existing German sports club that plays football is TSV 1814 Friedland, founded in, well, 1814. Among (former) Bundesliga clubs SSV Ulm (founded 1846) and VfL Bochum (founded 1848) are older than 1860. All those clubs started playing football later, of course. The first club to play football in Germany was Dresden English, in 1874. The club later joined Dresdner SC, although the still existing Dresdner SC was refounded, so technically not the same club as the pre-war one. The oldest still existing pro football club in Germany, if you include pre-merger clubs, is Hamburger SV, one of the clubs that merged into HSV was founded in 1887. The oldest still existing football clubs in their original form in Germany are Germania Berlin and Viktoria Berlin, both founded in 1888.
For accuracy's sake I have to correct, that Viktoria Berlin was, of course, founded in 1889 (their official name is Viktoria 89 Berlin, so I could have guessed it ) - the rest is, as far as I know, right, though .
No. http://www.tsv-friedland-1814.de/ (technically the club was also refounded - as in East Germany, where it was based, all private clubs were abolished and turned into state run sports clubs, but in this case I'll let it slide. If you don't want to count them, the oldest existing club in it's original form in Germany is Hamburger TS 1816, who also have a football section: http://www.ht16.de/). Sports clubs in Germany started in the 1810s, with the gymnastics movement. As I said, the soccer section was of course founded later.
The oldest Uruguayan club still existing is Penarol, founded in 1891 as CURCC. Central Uruguay Railway Company. The oldest club, which does not exist anymore, is Albion
Funny that FC Porto only "discovered" that it was almost a century old a few years before the 1993 commemorations. FC Porto was really founded in 1906, like Sporting and also Benfica. You can read more about the foundation of your club, wich is a very interesting story, in this transcription of a 1920's document written by FCP's founding sócio, António Martins: http://xafarica.weblog.com.pt/arquivo/115620.html Mudar a data de fundação de um clube é sinal de complexo de inferioridade, no entanto eu entendo que o comum portista ache realmente que o seu clube foi fundado naquela data devido à desinformação de que têm sido alvo. De um portista informado espero mais. Tenho a gente da vossa cidade em melhor conta que isso.
Well, if you know they wern't founded as football clubs and only started playing much later on, then why bother mentioning them? This is a thread about oldest football clubs in the world, not oldest gymnastics clubs.
Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club was a Cricket and association football club from Uruguay. It was abbreviated as CURCC, but unofficially known as Peñarol because of the neighbourhood of Montevideo, the uruguayan capital, where it was established on September 28, 1891. CURCC was the result of the decision of the British Railway Company in Uruguay to have a sports club. Because of this fact, the colours of the club were inspired by those of the railway signs. The club had important achievements in the 1890s and the first decade of the twentieth century, being one of the founders of the Uruguayan League and the AUF. In 1913 conflicts between the Central Uruguay Railway administrators and the football section directives, led to the breakaway of some members, who established Club Atlético Peñarol in 1913, taking the unofficial name of the CURCC, Peñarol, as its official name. Its name, coming from the Montevideo neighbourhood and using the spanish language, established it as a uruguayan football club. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.A._Peñarol .
And.. This is the oldest rugby club outside Europe: Montevideo Cricket Club, founded in 1861. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montevideo_Cricket_Club Official site: http://www.mvcc.com.uy/
There wouldn't have been much left to add after our magnificient original post, sunshine. So I went for the controversial "background information" route, in case someone might be interested. It breaks my heart that you were dissapointed, though.
I'm sure my post wasn't that detailed that you had to resort to talking about the world's oldest gymnastics clubs, my friend. I don't think anyone else on here had the same problem, but there again I think that just questions your range of football knowledge.
I'm not sure exactly what kind of issue you have here, given that you bumped the thread after over a month to complain about a post I made in reply to someone else. Especially since your contribution to your own thread was nothing one couldn't get in significantly higher quality on freaking wikipedia. And that aside - the clubs are older. I gave a list on the oldest football clubs in Germany by various angles (oldest club to play football, period, first football club, first currently professional football club, oldest still existing football club) for everyone interested. You didn't care, so deal with it like a grown man and move on to topics that interest you.
Well, I suggest you stop reading forums and just follow Wikipedia if you think that is informationally superior to people on here. And I'm sorry if I don't dedicate my life to posting on here, and only have a chance to post once in a while. But I think you're missing the point, you're the one who seems to have the issue, especially after your defensive reply to my post. Anyway, don't reply to me again, this pointless conversation is starting to bore me. If anyone has anything else to contribute to this thread please feel free to so, and don't let this troll deter you.
