After not hearing from the FO in forever, I received two emails in the last two days, each assuring me that I will want to rejoin the STH ranks now that Timo's on board. I hope it works out for them, but I'm not seeing it.
Haha, I get multiple emails lately asking if I wanna order extra tickets for the Levi’s game in September.
Holy crap, that was long! Over an hour. It really dragged on and honestly got a little painful. At times it played like a job interview for Timo "Timo, what did you learn about yourself when you weren't playing for Leipzig the last 6 months". I was half expecting, "Timo what are you biggest weaknesses". Also, man, every Tom, Dick and Harry from every 2-bit psuedo media outlet, like "Daniel Poulter from Poulter Talk Sports". If I had the link I could have called in as "JazzyJ from JazzyJ Post-Tribune Sports". Timo expresses himself well in English even if not the greatest English. Easily good enough. There was one question and answer in German and the translation was atrocious, almost useless. I assume it was AI. The Quakes apparently have a new communications / PR guy(?), Ryan Maquinana, who did a good job. The most interesting thing in the whole interview is that Bruce said that our offseason changes have been "addition by subtraction" and about wanting to get a new mindset or something to that effect. I'm sure he wouldn't include Espinoza in the "addition by subtraction". First of all, that's quite an insult to a lot of players, including Espinoza, Josef, and Chicho. Also, if Chicho was an "addition by subtraction" guy why did we sign him to a new contract a few months ago? Bruce seemed very confident about the team this year. Not feeling it. But he did say that we should be signing another attacking player in the next week or two (and maybe one more after that - though maybe not an "attacking player" - that wasn't clear). Timo says he like to play a 2nd 9 or false 9, or even with some aspects of a 10, and likes to drop deep to be part of the buiildup - to be the creator of the chances on goal, not just the striker. So sounds like he likes to play like Chicho, and if both were here, I think there would have been some overlap. He didn't mention wing. I think he likes to be in the middle with more freedom.
Also, after hearing how Bruce talked about "support from ownership" (mentioned in a positive way) I'm a lot less confident that an ownership change announcement is imminent. I didn't pick up on any of that kind of vibe from Bruce's comments in this press conference.
To be fair to the Bruce, "addition by subtraction" is a tactful way to phrase it. (Maybe the new comms guy came up with that?) What's he supposed to say: "yeah, we lost the guys who scored 90% of our goals last season -- we're in deep doodoo"???
"Addition by subtraction" is not a euphemism when we lost 90% of our goal production, it's simply delusional
“Timo Werner looks to "create new history" with San Jose Earthquakes” (MLSsoccer.com - Friday, 1/30/26) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Deep doodoo would have been honest. And addition by subtraction may have been about Rodrigues and Wilson. In any case, I’m expecting a catastrophically bad season, unless we sign six new quality players in the next couple of weeks. Chance of that is close to zero. Go Quakesfans!!
Yeah, a case can be made for Wilson, certainly at his salary level. I'm not as down on Rodrigues as Bruce, and always enjoyed watching him play, even when it was a bit like sitting in a bus with no driver going downhill at times. Kaye was OK, but his salary was too high. BTW I don't think he has a club right now. I wonder if we'll re-sign him to a significantly lower salary. Or maybe he'll play in Canada. But Chicho, Espinoza, and Josef? Not "addition by subtraction" unless we sign really good players to take their place (one down, two to go). But that's not "addition by subtraction", that's addition by subtraction and then addiing a greater number.
Cristian was a great player and was said to be great in the locker room. Don't know about Chicho and Josef. Sounds like they wanted out. But, they might not have liked Bruce, or Bruce's plans. It's hard to know. Is Bruce saying that he had dissension in the locker room? Is that his excuse for why we sucked butt down the stretch? As opposed to him benching Beau, and a couple of guys getting hurt, and Wilson and Rodrigues turning to crap? Bruce made some strange decisions late. Like starting Judd in place of Josef. I blame Bruce, your mileage may vary. Go Quakesfans!! F$%# Fisher!!
Three weeks ago: “We’re pleased to re-sign Chicho Arango,” said Earthquakes Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena. “He has consistently been one of the league’s top scorers while also displaying the ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. We look forward to seeing him in our attack for years to come.” “I’m very happy to sign a new contract and stay in San Jose,” said Arango, whose words were translated from Spanish. “We have unfinished business. I believe in the project, and my family and I want to make history here." https://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/news-earthquakes-sign-cristian-chicho-arango-to-new-contract How can anyone square Bruce's statement there with "addition by subtraction". It's BS. Like I said, if we replace these guys with even better players, OK. But that's not addition by subtraction, which means we're better off not having the player than we are with the player. That's addition by subtraction and then adding a larger number than the subtracted number. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Timo Werner announced birth of child. https://www.reddit.com/r/coys/comme..._and_his_wife_announce_the_birth_of/#lightbox
Totally understand wanting to keep your kid's face out of photos, but that is one of the weirdest new baby pictures I've ever seen. The comments on that reddit thread are pretty telling
Now that the baby has been born, what’s to keep the family from coming to the US? Mom probably needs some recovery time. Grandparents probably want time with the little one. Not a good idea to fly with a new born. Yeah, it could be three weeks before he gets to SJ, and he’s likely to be a bit sleep deprived when he gets here. Why is it that we aren’t looking for more players? Because we think that last year’s second string are going to rake? We are sooooooo screwed. Go Quakesfans!!
Timo could come here w/o the baby but I wouldn't be surprised if the Quakes told him to take a bit of time to be with his newborn and wife. It's a long season.
Yeah, I wanted time with mine when she was born. And Europeans get a lot of time off for a birth. I’m not begrudging him the time, and we’re going to suck hard this season anyway. So no rush, yeah? Go Quakesfans!!
I don't think salaries are normally disclosed before MLS releases salary data midseason. There was some haggling with RB Leipzig over transfer fee but it seems like it was gonna be a realtiy small amount if any. Transfermarkt says free transfer. I'm guessing his salary may be it's something in the $3-4M range? Just a guess. Timo's salary at RB Leipzig was somewhere around $10M. They owed him $5M till the end of their season, and gave him a $2M "severance package".
Hmm, have we had any DPs over $1M — Hernan, Espinoza, Chicho, etc? I can’t believe Fisher would spring for a $4M man. Do we know how much Mueller, Son, James Rodriguez are making? - - - edit. - - - Apparently Bouanga is at least a $3M man…
