I can only say I haven't seen one cent since shutdown. Just one terse announcement letting us know we weren't going to be used for the foreseeable future.
Have to give the Quakes ownership credit on that front - even though hiring Almeyda was a commitment to blue collar soccer, bringing on El Pelado and his cohorts was a shockingly respectable, seemingly ambitious move.
Yes, but, Fisher was probably thinking it more cost effective to spend a little more than usual on a coach who could hopefully make the proverbial silk purse out of a sow's ear and save him a ton of money on player's salaries.
Unfortunate. I read an article online back in May or june about what different sports owners are doing during covid. Mark Cuban, Kraft and Arthur Blank vowed to pay all employees from maitnence to game day opperations.
I loved Spartan too, my first Quakes game ever was the inaugural game. So exciting to see this vibrant, multi-cultural soccer community, right here, in my backyard! It was always fun, but especially from 2001 - 05. The rivalry with LA was a blast, you really felt like those games could go either way, the Galaxians down in the corner, the Casbah...and our team, exciting, fun...we exploited that narrow field for all it was worth. But Ching, DeRo, Landon, Pat and Brian Mullan, loved that guy. I feel sorry for Quakes fans who tuned in after 2008.
My first game was the same and was season ticket holder. Never missed a home game, my dad drug me to all the games anyways. I feel like 1996-2005 no matter what was always a fun spectacle, and even when we sucked balls in 1997-2000 the team was never abysmal looking nor did we get blown out. Unfortunately I think a lot of the old dogs stop caring after 2005 and rightfully so, I know plenty of people who haven't given a dime to MLS, or defected to a new team, I also know a large group of people who have canceled season tickets and have or will be defectinf to Sacramento. The culture is what made this club exciting during the 96-05 era. We haven't developed any type of culture since the 2008 rebirth. Something that needs to be and should be addressed immedietly. We can blame everyone for different reasons and what not, but even us fans have turned into being whiney, bitchy assholes. But again direct results from different things.
Yeah I started to write: "can't believe they let that go too." But it's not just believable, it's predictable. Having a big name coach and a first rate playing surface are both far out of line for this club, from our experience.
In most ways, we (team, fans, etc.) never recovered from the team moving. Many fans didn't return and the culture, well, just not the same. You lost a lot of the NASL fans who were so passionate about the game. Informally, we knew people who drove good distance to go to the games. They didn't return.
We never will recover in this generation. It will take 20-30 years to erase the time between both clubs. The most painful thing in the world is having to watch Houston win back-2-backs with the core of the Quakes. I think we were rigged out of the playoffs in 2005.
I do think the culture changed, but some of it transferred over to Buck Shaw, I really enjoyed that little stadium as well (I just flashed on a crazy old day involving ACB and lots of police)...interestingly, here on these boards there are quite a lot of folks who were around back in Spartan days, which is very cool. As far as your last statement, Quakes fans have been through a lot and have a legitimate grievance, our championship team was ripped away from us. Anyone coming in as a new owner after all that bullshit needed to appreciate that history and how important it was to get some retribution on the field for what had happened. Instead, we've had to endure this long, never-ending legacy of failed Fisherball...so excuse us if we're a bit whiney and bitchy, Quakes fans have every right to be. Fisher, instead of working to put things right, has added insult to injury by never really putting his team (our team!) in a position to succeed.
I try so hard to be anti Bitchy and Whiney. But I understand why. I also think it's a crying shame many new fans don't know of the old teams fun and glory to have vision for the possible future post Fisher Almeyda Fioranelli etc. But we must be realistic, I have 0 faith in thks club, and I think Ian Russell is the brightest light at the tunnel that brings hope to a new beginning. He's very educated in the game, and he finds a way and articulates his tactics to his talent to maximize the most of them. He tried giving is Musvoski who we deemed not good enough, now he's first off the bench for LAFC... That's the hope I have for this future, someone who brings a beacon of old school with new school soccer education and experience. He would succeed with this club
I'll take your word for it on Ian. Ian would have the same challenges though. The league has become steadily more competitive while the Quakes have not kept pace.
My son attended every home game at Spartan with a friend, courtesy of my comp tickets, and would sit behind the south goal and razz the opposing keeper and teams warming up on that side. Neither of them have attended a game (except one at Avaya to check it out) or watched MLS since 2005 and they still hold a giant grudge against the league. I suppose that if we strung together a couple of 2012s they might be tempted back, but as he says "they took the best team in MLS and moved it and then gave us a perpetual expansion team in its place."
It's never easy to say goodbye... but it's time to say goodbye to the beautiful game and hang up my boots.@SJEarthquakes @WhitecapsFC @TorontoFC @LAFC @ColoradoRapids @MLS @adidassoccer pic.twitter.com/o1SLZlj3C8— Steven Beitashour (@Sbeita33) December 13, 2023 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Congrats to Beita, a real SJ home grown. One of my all time favs...really a shame he didn't spend the majority of his career with the Quakes, but that's a tragic story for another day. I wonder if he's interested in coaching. I know he was sideways with the Quakes, but maybe time has healed some of those feelings. I'm assuming he still has family in the area, If he is interested in coaching, might be a good fit to bring him back into the fold in some capacity...or maybe join Ramiro and Joe with Frank down in Monterey. Wishing Beita the best in his future endeavors...
