Real Sociedad in danger of going under

MADRID, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Primera Liga side Real Sociedad are in danger of disappearing unless they can solve their debt problems, club president Miguel Fuentes said on Friday.

'The situation is worrying, even critical, because we either have to make a success of increasing our capital or else dissolve the club altogether,' Fuentes told a news conference.

'We have got a very hard job ahead of us, but I believe that we can turn the situation round.'

Vice-president Inaki Alkorta said the present board of directors had inherited a debt of close to €31 million (£17.5million) when they took charge in the close season.

'We started work on July 1 and had to close the accounts for the previous board,' said Alkorta.

'We didn't believe everything they told us and so we contracted a team of professionals to give us the true figures and they informed us that the present debt was €30,914,441.

Previous president Jose Luis Astiazaran gave up his post at the end of last season and took up a position as president of the Spanish Professional Football League (LFP).

Sociedad, who are based in the Basque city of San Sebastian, are one of Spain's most historic clubs.

Founded in 1909, they won back-to-back league championships in 1981 and 1982 and were pipped to the title by Real Madrid on the final day of the season in 2003. They are currently 14th in the league standings.

I'm surprised that Real is this low in the table. It's hard to beleive that in the 2002-03 season that this club was a title contender.

Is the feeling that with more scoring La Real will be able to control the pace, and thus its defense will have to work less? Lord knows they need to score more. But an earlier post suggested that they need to shore up the defense. (Four 0-0 ties, however, suggests that the D is o.k.)
