As head of the nearby neighborhood association at the time, Nancy Thomas’ name was the most prominent one on the attempted appeal to delay the stadium’s construction that thankfully ended up being dismissed back on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, though strangely, she wasn’t actually present at that appeal meeting. One of her neighbors certainly was, though, replete with tales of his children who get cranky if they’re not asleep by 8:30pm on Saturday nights. In any case, I think that David Kaval then publicly promised to continue open communication with them to be a good neighbor, but he thankfully stopped short of ever officially declaring that there would never be fireworks and concerts at the stadium. I thought PPP would never have fireworks shows because the airport would not allow it. Has something big changed recently? And was that a joke about the drone show at Stanford? I would love to see a drone show, have not seen one yet.
The show at Stanford this year will be a drone show, "the biggest drone show in MLS history". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As I recall, there was a problem with planes landing beyond 10 PM. Unless something has changed or unless SJC are not going to schedule any flight landings during that time, maybe puting on fireworks shows are no longer an issue?
There is a curfew, but I can assure you - it’s observed more in the breach than in fact. Trust me on this: I lived right under the flight path for ten years in north Santa Clara.
Maybe the fireworks will be like what they light during the Star-Spangled Banner. It will be like watching Mini Kiss:
Meanwhile, elsewhere in MLS : “Chicago Fire FC plan soccer-specific stadium for 2028 debut” (MLSsoccer.com - Tuesday, 6/3/25) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
So because two ownership groups ago they built a stadium in a bad location and it failed, the current owners shouldn't try to get it right now?
No. My post was a meta-commentary on the franchise, not any particular ownership group, and mostly about the failure of the previous ownership - building a soccer specific stadium for the team which was then abandoned. :facepalm
Chicago's previous soccer specific stadium was not in a "bad location". I visited at least three times for Quakes games (2010, 2013, and 2018), and the location and stadium experience was fine. If you're gonna have one stadium in a sprawling megalopolis like Chicagoland, there is no "good location" easily accessible from everywhere. I've been to Soldier Field for a Quakes game, too (2004), and it was a crappy venue -- no tailgating, expensive parking, cavernous and soulless. Preferred Bridgeview.
Interestingly, if construction continues without any delays (God willing), we’ll be seeing a new SSS open up in each of the next three seasons: Miami (2026), New York City (2027) and Chicago (2028). Has there been any progress in the New England Revolution’s current efforts in finalizing a soccer-specific stadium? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Fire plan to build $650M stadium at The 78 Regardless of whether Bridgeview is a good location or not, the new stadium will be in just about the best possible location, even better than Soldier Field... it's in this new neighborhood called The 78 that's just south of the loop. They should be more ambitious than a 22k stadium though, why not 25k. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_78 https://maps.app.goo.gl/KdS32YyfpTLYyuuu6
Soldier Field is not soccer specific and has other drawbacks. Random but typical observation on the Fire subreddit: I hate it more than any place they’ve ever played. Insanely overpriced parking, horrible concessions, soulless atmosphere, and just a god awful match day experience getting in and out of the place. Good riddance. I dropped my season tickets because of how bad it was. Maybe now I’ll come back. The proposed stadium design is inspiring, and I agree about the location.
Chicago Fire stadium location is once-in-a-lifetime parcel in downtown Chicago:2 blocks from three CTA rail lines, about 1 mile S of Sears tower. Revs should be next... Seattle is an interesting situation because the ownership may build a stadium near their Starfire training facility but almost every Sounders fan doesn't want that because the current location is much better and next to mass transit. "if they tried" maybe, but why try? Everyone talks about the best American cities, but what are the cities that could pretty easily be a lot awesomer if they tried? My list:San JosePhiladelphia DallasRaleighPhoenixColumbus— Noah Smith 🐇 (@Noahpinion) June 5, 2025
Phoenix - average temperatures 105 degrees F in the summer, and rising, and no water. No thanks. It can never be "awesomer". I like cities where you can reasonably go outside and enjoy the weather on a summer day. But that's just me.
