I definitely agree that it was a mistake for PayPal Park not to be fully enclosed (as well as for it not to have an outer skin). It’s one of many examples of how (from what I’ve heard) John Fisher and Lew Wolff purposely and consciously cut every corner they possibly could while both planning and building the stadium. The LOBINA and the dancing area around it certainly does seem to draw and keep people away from their seats throughout the game, making the stadium look more empty (both in person and on TV) than it actually is. Sorry to hear (read) about that last paragraph. I’m not necessarily doubting you, it’s just that I haven’t been able to attend a game in a while so I wouldn’t know how it’s been like there recently. Concession people are awesome, anyone actually employed by the Quakes... good people.. The Yellow jackets, are a bunch of clowns. Some of these USL SSS Stadiums are amazing and fantastic. The Lobina is great in theory, awful in execution.
Actually it seems that the stadium had many upgrades over what Lew Wolff initially had planned / imagined and the budget went way higher than planned as I recall. I think it was Keith Wolff and Kaval who pushed for the upgrades. So while we can complain about the open side and the unfinished roof and no skin, it could have been *way* worse. It would have been more like Empire Stadium with roof support poles coming down into the stands and stuff.
It was the city that demanded Wolff upgrade the stadium. I was at a game at Buckshaw sitting with Don G. at his midfield sideline seats right next to Keith Wolff, and heard Wolff saying the city told them the stadium design needed to be improved. The city was not going to support them in this land deal if it meant a substandard stadium.
I know I sound like a broken record, 3 things that still bug me about Avaya/PPP. I was a STH at Buck Shaw and at Avaya for a while (gave up after the Stahre fiasco). 1. LOBINA is unique but because so many like hanging out there the place never looks packed. 2. The moat, I guess they were trying to appease corporate clients(who tend to be fickle/fairweather fans at best) instead of true fans. Wish the luxury suites were up high like the press box area. 3. No outer skin. Makes the place look unfinished. Other than the outer skin no easy fixes for the place. And the gaul of Fisher to complain about the facility he built just irks me to no end.
1. Had to put something there so why not a bar that prints money? 2. Suites were added after plans were approved so they couldn't/ didn't want to pay for new plans/permits. 3.Agree somewhat. I kinda like the industrial "blue" collar look. However a skin would be nice if done well.
Someone in the MLS: Expansion Who's next thread posted this… Is it true that the Quakes aren't making money off the concessions at PayPal? I find this very difficult to believe.
Name me one concert that has been at PPP? This person thinks there're making bank on movie nights, and the like?
The initial poster posted about the concert and fireworks and when I refuted it , he never responded. I'm mostly referring to revenue from concessions.
