When we get the numbers I assume tomorrow, will this be the highest MLS broadcast rating? If high scoring MLS Cup match means higher rating (the number proves it), what correlation can you make about scoring and rating?

    So have your guess...

Result: 4-2 MLS Cup 2003 at LA- ??

Here's prior MLS Cup rating courtesy of Kenn.com
Result: 1-0 MLS Cup 2002 at Foxboro -0.8
    Result: 2-1 MLS Cup 2001 at Columbus - 1.0
    Result: 1-0 MLS Cup 2000 at Wash - 0.7
    Result: 2-0 MLS Cup 1999 at Foxboro - 1.0
Result: 2-0 MLS Cup 1998 at LA
Result: 2-1 MLS Cup 1997 at Wash - 1.4 (record)
    Result: 3-2 MLS Cup 1996 at Foxboro - 1.4

Note: Last Sunday's ABC Sports Coverage of GRAND PRIX Figure Skating got a 2.0 . The broadcast time started at 4:00 pm.

You would think it would be pretty good because of the Adu hype and the game was pretty well promoted...

the freddy hype didnt do much for mls cup, most of the articles i read and tv stories i saw didn't mention the game. however, i thought the there was a little more buzz this year from fsw showing the games and the number of articles recently from people who don't usually write about soccer.
i'm guessing we'll see a new record number for a mls game, something around 1.6 or 1.8

Sports ratings in general for all sports have declined over the pat 8 year period I believe so I'd be shocked if we get back up to 1.4.

I think the league would be estatic with a 1.0

I know this is nothing new but way to go mickey!

"Even so, the sport struggles for respect from none other than the very ABC network that will carry the game Sunday. ABC Sports did not schedule a media conference call to promote the game, and media members looking for information on the MLS Cup on the ABC press web site this week could only find releases on previous year's matches. Not so at mlsnet.com, which has everything you need to know."

Also, the article points out how the Fire and Blackhawks were drawing similar rating #s.

Overnight would have been available somewhere today, if someone knew where to find it. It's not exactly something the network is going to trumpet. The league would trumpet it if it was particularly high, but that would mean they would put it on their website, which would take about four days.

The full national rating may not be in for a week. May not show up on the ratings sites that are readily available for a little longer than that.

Sick - it was a great game. Oh, well, that will have to suffice - that it was an amazing match, no matter how few Nielsen boxes were tuned to it.

    Rant.

Why the Fcu*ing hell didn't MLS advertise this game better? I never saw one metion of it on TV before the Cup. I know, I know, it costs money, but this game was a great advetisement for the league and it would have been great if more people had seen it...

But I guess the ratings for the MLS season opener next year will make up for this... ;)

We did a 1.0 on opening day this year. I know it was back on April and fewer things were going on but how can a meaningless opening game outrate MLS cup final.

That explains next year's opener, but why did this year's opener get more viewers than the final?

Partially because when you get down to numbers that low, the margin for error has a bigger effect.

We can argue methodology forever (and we have), but the point is, when you're talking about numbers around the 1.0 level and below, the accuracy leaves a little more to be desired. So I wouldn't read too much into it.

And (and this goes for lots of other games, and attendance as well as TV ratings) the "importance" of the game, as you define it the way you do in other sports, isn't the biggest determining factor in our league.

    Re: Rant.

I did happen to see a live promo read during the Michigan-OSU game, accompanied by 1/4 screen soccer highlights. Can't ask for a better spot for an ad-that was the game of the week, if not year in college football. The commentator, Something Jackson, was overflowing with enthusiasm as he read what he was made to read. ;)

Well, as said above, I really don't think we can be sure if any more people are watching a 1.0 game than a 0.9 game. Hopefully sponsors keep that in mind. In any case, I'm far more interested in the ratings for the next MLS game than I was in the ratings for this one. MLS plus Freddy minus NFL competition means maybe we could hit a record. Think so?

i thought the most important thing was that:quote:"Nationally, the MLS championship game only did a .9 rating, just barely beating the season-ending LPGA tournament."

considering the amount of lpga golf shown on network tv and no doubt the amount of $$ (i really don't know if it's a lot or a little) paid by the networks to show it, i thought beating the final lpga tournament of the year might give us some juice - no?

are we locked into fsw for centuries? or might we use this to get some $$ from a broadcast network or at least from some more widely distributed cable network?

or maybe i'm just an mls fool-junkie hoping....
