When I met the coaches and the assistants last week, I overheard them talking about living up there and how much they liked it. Not sure about Almeyda since he makes the big bucks, its either there or Los Gatos-Saratoga...
No one ever lives in the 'hood, like me. Back in the day, Sam Garza told me he lived in an apartment a block or so away from the MLK Library downtown. Keeping it real.
Don, do you open your home to Academy or Reserve players? Could be a new source of income or write-off!
Does anybody here do that? I've always thought that could be kind of fun. I'd be interested in knowing how it works.
I bet Jackson does a ton of extra fitness working while he's with the Nats. He knows the kind of shape he needs to be in. A lot of our guys worked out at the team facilities in the off-season. They didn't have to, it wasn't required, but something like 70% to 80% of our guys showed up for "optional" workouts. I bet Jackson shows to camp in good shape. Go Quakes!! - Mark
Sam Garza rules!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Garza Um, that was in response to someone else commenting on Sam ... I’ve had a couple of odd glitches in some posts. I think this is the right thread? (That is, the other poster’s comment about Sam was in this one?) Yeah, @don gagliardi’s post 2105 a few above this where he said that Sam G told Don about his housing. We were discussing that many of the players and coaches don’t live in San Jose. (Which I think they should. Show some civic pride!) Don mentioned that he lives in SJ (in the ‘hood). And he said that Sam G said that he did too. - Mark
Not sure how I feel about this. It's not like San Jose has exactly bent over backwards to accommodate the Quakes...
from MLS website...to say this is a bit of a stretch in an understatement.... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...-becomes-mls-villain-here-are-some-contenders San Jose Earthquakes The revived Earthquakes were a feel-good story last season as Matias Almeyda installed his high-tempo man-marking system to good effect – so why would anyone come to dislike them in the months ahead? It might be a wild stab, but theirs is a maverick operation in many ways. They play a style like no other in the league, one that demands intensity and physicality, and aims to get under opponents’ skin. Like their consciously scruffy ultras, perhaps those all-black kits will come to signify a bad-boy spirit. With a rock star’s mentality and charisma, Almeyda may not be quite so endearing to neutrals should he elevate the Bay Area side into a position to punch down, rather than up, at most of the league. And he’s injected some Latin American talent into his roster that won’t be afraid to engage in a bit of the dark arts.
The writer is busy inciting an invasion. You'll be greeted as liberators https://t.co/YAFzk5GoET— Charles Boehm (@cboehm) February 4, 2020
Racist much?! WTF is this?! : he’s injected some Latin American talent into his roster that won’t be afraid to engage in a bit of the dark arts. Liga MX has less fouling than MLS! Ours is a much more physical league. What the hell?! And the Galactofilth have always employed more Mexican (and Latin American) players than the Quakes, but we never hear about them playing dirty. Oswaldo Alonso was one of the dirtiest players in the league, but MLS Soccer never gave him any grief over it. What's with the double standard here? Let's assume that this is an example of writers being forced to create copy when they really have nothing to write about. This is crap and it should never have gotten past the editor. Go Quakes!! F@#$ MLSsoccer!! - Mark
I think you pretty much summed it up. I mean, you could have stopped reading when they characterized Almeyda as having a "rock star mentality". While Almeyda certainly is popular with fans, I certainly never got the impression that he exhibited any proverbial rock star behaviors. I mean, the very premise of the entry is ridiculous. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is going to think of San Jose as a villain. To be a villain, you actually have to achieve something so that others feel as though you did so unjustly. Missing the playoffs 7 years out of 10 does not a villain make, and hiring a popular, high profile coach does not change that in the slightest. MLS Soccer dot com continues to prove that its writers are among the worst writers in professional sports, if not the worst. I'll re-iterate because I love doing so, but it's the same site that brought us the article declaring Stahre the most sophisticated offensive mind in MLS after a couple games (an article which they took down, presumably out of unbearable embarrassment). Even the garbage that plagued the 49er SB Nation page wasn't this bad. I'm not going to click on the article because I don't want to give it traffic, but is there a by line? Maybe we can send a complaint.
Lenhart was a villain back in the day. And, I outed the writer by posting one of his tweets earlier on this thread.
What about all the other teams with Latin American players? Aren't they just as likely and capable of engaging in the dark arts?
