Matias time with AEK Athens has come to an end after a pretty successful spell in charge of the club, i wonder if he will look to manage another club or take a National Team gig if one becomes an option for him
Seems that it didn't end so well, as many of us predicted. https://greekherald.com.au/news/aek-athens-parts-ways-with-coach-matias-almeyda/
It never ends well in the Greek league , if he got paid what he was owed he should consider himself lucky, and find a better job if one becomes available.
He had success at AEK but they are one of the top teams in Greece. I don’t think he ever had a chance with the Quakes and other than signing Cristian Espinoza who is still with us, he chose the wrong players for MLS. Covelo is still with the Quakes I believe.
Is that why we stopped getting updates? Because for a while we got like weekly updates from multiple people here about Almeyda's exploits in Greece (a much worse league btw)... Sort of like Kaval's Kockoff but the falvo/Quakes05 version! AEK was eliminated from European competition by Armenian side Noah in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Yikes... Greece is 12th in the UEFA league coefficient (between Norway and Austria), and Armenia is 35th (between Bosnia and Latvia). For an idea of how low that is 40th is the Faroe Islands.
Well, signing players is part of the "chance" that you have. He was effectively the GM as well as coach in terms of who is signed, like Bruce is now. Jesse was just his yes man who did the administrative part of the deals.
No idea what players he signed in Greece or if they were any good, but we know he went to one of the top Greek teams, and they were best when he got there winning the title in their first season, not as good in his second season, and ended with being eliminated by some random Armenian club and "six losses in the six-match playoff round" in his third season. So it sounds like he inherited a good team and ran it into the ground in three years. Whereas with the Quakes he inherited a crap team and they stayed crap or got worse as he signed a bunch of Friends of Almeyda that inevitably didn't work out.
"The season continued with inconsistent performances, culminating in a crushing 6-0 defeat to Olympiacos in the first leg of the Betsson Greek Cup semi-final. This followed an earlier 4-1 loss to the same side in the league at Faliro, further compounding pressure on the Argentine manager." That sounds familiar.

Matías Almeyda reportedly closing in on Monterrey job, with Domènec Torrent and former Barcelona manager Xavi is also in the mix So former Quakes coach, former NYCFC coach, and almost Inter Miami coach...
I kind of wish Kaitlyn were here to tell us more about the purple sweater that he personally sent her. Not selling them Kikanovic ended up being one of the worst financial decisions we've made.
Or the private chat “she” had with him (which I never believed was real - there was too much fishy stuff in that supposed chat). As far as I know the Benji thing was never confirmed by a reliable source and seems questionable to me.
Coaching in Europe, as opposed to MLS or in San Jose for that matter, will age anyone in dog years. I wonder if Almeyda’s daughter took to Twitter this time to bad mouth AEK’s organization?
Apparently our good friend Kaitlyn got this text message from Matias Almeyda right after he was fired not sure what it means...
