Yes, and they still haven't won anything since they left. This reinforces the idea that stadiums don't guarantee success or win championships. It's all about the players. I still don't see the lure of Levi's Stadium even though they spent $1.3 billion to build it in 2014. I had fun watching Joe Montana , Roger Craig, Jerry Rice and Steve Young in the 80's and 90's at the Stick but I can't say the same for any of the Niners at Levi's since 2014.
The Niners playing at the Stick certainly had better players and coaches by comparison to today’s team. Bill Walsh’s West Coast Offense was great but Chuck Studley and George Seifert’s defenses were equally as great and were a joy to watch. Ronnie Lott , Carlton Williamson, Fred Dean , Hacksaw Reynolds , Keena Turner , Charles Haley to name a few were awesome in those years.
I once saw Willy Mays play at the Stick. I saw a lot of baseball games there! And a few Niners games. I’ve been to a lot of stadia. I liked Buck Shaw better than PayPal. It was too small of course, but the fans were much closer to the pitch. Weidner Field in Colorado Spring is really cool too. PayPal, not so much. Go Quakesfans!!
You know, we made fun of that PPP (Buck Shaw) at the time, but my best memories are from there. The bench seating, as uncomfortable as it was, was conducive to talking to other fans, and lots of chances to get close to players as well as the pitch. Walking across the university campus before and after games. If we leave out the bathrooms -- much nicer at our current PPP -- Buck Shaw offered a superior fan experience.
My best memories of watching the Quakes -Clash -Quakes games were and remain all at Spartan. It was an old relic with bathrooms that were horrible but it was an awesome place to watch a game. I miss it but PPP isn’t a bad place to watch a game either. Bringing it back to the thread , the bottom line is , we don’t need a new stadium , we need Fisher to sell the team to a new owner who is willing to spend money and buy better players.
The 2 coaches who came after Walsh were lucky enough to inherit a system and players a monkey could have coached and won with, after most of those people were gone not so much.
Walsh gets a lot of credit for his offenses but Siefert built the defenses in the 1990's when Bill had been long gone. He deserves some credit too. My main point was or is though, the game is about the players not the new or old stadiums because that is what fans care mostly about.

Quadrupling revenue in just a few years is possible, a team in MLS just did it Inter Miami’s revenue has nearly quadrupled since Lionel Messi joined the club 😳💰From $56 million in 2022 to an estimated $200 million last season, Forbes estimates the club is now worth $1.35 billion — making it MLS' most valuable franchise for the first time.🐐 pic.twitter.com/OotSgey2v8— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) February 16, 2026
Magic 8ball says: No F@#ing Way! They are selling tons of Messi kits right now, and lots of season tickets. They won't fall off all the way to where they were before he joined, but they'll take a hit when he retires. GO Quakesfans!! F@#$ Miami!!
Moral of the story: you have to spend money to make money. Since that’s anathema to Fisher it doesn’t apply here…
Did LA Galaxy revenue fall off after David Beckham retired? Worth noting that the Galaxy have had a dozen or so "star" players post-Beckham, to varying degrees of success to be sure, but guys who are well known and will sell tickets and merch... Messi has made Inter Miami a destination, and they have since attracted "friends of Messi" (sure beats friends of Almeyda or Bruce) like Busquets Alba Suarez De Paul etc. Will it stop being a top destination after he retires? I doubt it. Also worth nothing that they currently play in an erector set temp stadium and will eventually move into their new stadium at Miami Freedom Park... Exactly.
So we need to get rid of RottenFish? Is that your analysis? OFF WITH HIS HEAD!! I mean that metaphorically. Go Quakesfans!!
