Maybe they’re waiting until Fisher gets so financially stretched out on the Las Vegas A’s that the Quakes become a little bit of a distress sale. Maybe they’re waiting for Fisher to agree to a complete sale, rather than just a partial sale.

There's no other MLS team in the bay area, and the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland CA is the fifth largest combined statistical area in the US with 10 million population:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_statistical_area#List_of_Combined_Statistical_Areas

As far as the passion for sports in the non-coastal parts, the five most valuable MLS teams (as seen above) are in LA Miami LA Atlanta and New York City... Austin is hardly stereotypical flyover country and Seattle is seven.

Although apparently World Cup teams love KC
    https://bsky.app/profile/chadcsmith.bsky.social/post/3mcsvmjy4n22q

The Quakes have to be considered an attractive investment relative to many other MLS teams based on those valuations. There are a few (Chicago, Houston, Dallas, NY obv) that seem like they could shoot up with the right deep pocketed ownership, competent leadership, winning, etc. but San Jose has to be very high up on that list.

See how NBA valuations have changed over the years. The current top 5 and top 10 are not really a surprise given the markets. Warriors are now #1 but they used to be 8 back when they sucked, and this only goes back to 2012 they were probably even lower before that. Would not be surprised to see the Knicks shoot up to 1 if they won a title, or the Lakers given they just got new ownership with big time money...

Well like I said the Warriors went from nobodies to the top of the league but they will be overtaken shortly by LA or NY. If they trade away some future draft picks in a desperate attempt at one last title shot, despite the fact that they were middle of the pack (8th out of 15 teams) even with their aging stars healthy, they could end up fading into irrelevance for the next dozen years if lottery balls don't bounce their way.

Perfect time for Joe Lacob to get really into soccer and win more MLS Cups than his pal Peter Guber

    • Joe Lacob, co-principal owner (along with Peter Guber) of GSW Sports LLC, which in turn owns the Golden State Warriors, the Golden State Valkyries and Chase Center.

I bet that RottenFish wants to sell 70% to 80% of the team and retain a minority share so that he can continue to profit off of other people’s investments in MLS.

He has said “a controlling interest” and not necessarily the whole enchilada. So we’ll see, but we should be hearing something within the next six weeks.

In the meantime, he’s wrecking the team and running the value of the club into the ground. I don’t understand that.

    Go Quakesfans!!

I could see Fisher wanting that, if he didn't need to sell 100% for the Vegas ballpark, but it will depend on what the bidders want, and I can't see them wanting to keep him around given how incompetently he's run the team.

They (I think it was the club) said January or February for news at least. Also, the team is in deep radio silence mode, which suggests that they might be in a blackout period regarding the deal. If it’s anything else, they are just shitbags.

    OK, probably just shitbags.

I’m so disgusted, I barely care anymore.

This discussion seems somewhat relevant to conversations around here... When Robert Pera bought the Memphis Grizzlies his plan was to move them to Las Vegas, but other league owners wouldn't let him. Basically old owners won't reward a new owner by letting them relocate to a better market like Vegas (from a former Montreal Expos exec who apparently also wanted to move their team to Vegas and were rejected). Also stated in this conversation is that Larry Ellison wanted to buy Memphis and move them to San Jose. The full episode mentions that Robert Pera brought a former NBA player to his San Jose home (he's former Apple) to help him train so he could take on a Grizzlies player 1v1 (it ended up not happening), so we've got multiple scumbags in the neighborhood...

    The full episode

The earlier reporting on how Memphis owner Robert Pera (now the fifth wealthiest owner in sports) circumvents sanctions to make his money from Russian military war crimes

Not sure if he has any interest in soccer but we probably don't want an actual war criminal as owner

Italians can build a bridge to Sicily if there’s enough money………. Refer to recent news and yes this is happening.

Also interesting from this clip is that while Memphis is considered a bottom tier sports market (hence Pera wanting to move them to Vegas and Ellison to San Jose), the former sports exec puts them "just above Green Bay and just below Vancouver"... well speaking of Vancouver we know the Whitecaps like the Quakes have been put on the market.... update on that from reddit:

Jeff Carlisle: Grim news from Vancouver Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster regarding sale of the team. Team has been for sale for 14 months. There were 100 outreaches. Almost 40 took a deeper look. Schuster said not a single one "is interested in buying even 1% of this club." Brutal.

    Ouch:
    https://bsky.app/profile/thethirdsub.ca/post/3mdocnck6cc2w

Axel Schuster speaking very honestly. Despite reaching multiple major finals in '25, the club was dead last in MLS in terms of revenue. 30+ prospective owners have looked at the club, but none are interested in buying the team with the current setup.

Owning your own soccer stadium in the bay area one of the wealthiest places in the world vs playing in a non-soccer stadium you don't own in the third largest metro area in Canada... also US dollar vs Canadian dollar is a huge difference.

Yeah - try getting tickets to a Packers game and tell me how "bottom tier" Green Bay is. It's ridiculous statement that would only be factual if all Packers fans came from Green Bay, but when you assess the Packers market you need to look at the six million people in Wisconsin, not the 106K who live in Green Bay. The Packers are middle-of-the-pack wrt annual revenue, not at the bottom.

If you've never lived in the midwest, you may underestimate the fanaticism for sports. People are passionate about their teams and aren't hesitant to show it. Yes, this metro area is large and affluent but it also has a lot of distractions that are competing with soccer for attention.

Some of the biggest crowds I've seen in downtown Palo Alto are for the college football games broadcast at the (former Old) Pro. Middle-aged fans wearing the college colors and reliving the glory days of 30 years ago. But they won't head to San Jose and watch a soccer game in person.

As of today, San Francisco 49ers team president Al Guido has been promoted to its CEO.

Jed York remains as the principal owner of the 49ers, with him and his parents owning a combined 90% of the team.

I’m not sure, but if they do, the San Jose Earthquakes wouldn’t be the only soccer team the Yorks would own: through their investment arm 49ers Enterprises, they currently fully own Leeds United FC in England and 51% of Rangers FC in Scotland.
