So nothing to surprising as I had assumed the 49ers had some interest in purchasing the Quakes, i did speak to my friend yesterday at the niner game who has worked in the business office with the niners since 2000, he said there have been ongoing talks about the niners purchasing the Quakes, still in the preliminary stages is how he put it. He is a reliable source , again nothing near completion .
Would be good, I guess? In a beggars can't be choosers kind of way? Don't think they'd want to move the team, they are pretty ambitious, at least with the Niners. Just wouldn't want them to make the team play at Levi's.
If they made them play at Levi's i would not renew my season tickets that i have had since 1996, dealer breaker for me.
If it's between playing at Levi's and moving to Las Vegas I'll take the former. Wouldn't be happy but not a dealbreaker for me. It would be dumb though. 14k in a 70k stadium... They could compromise and have most of the games at PPP and the couple of marquee games at Levi's (which is virtually what we're doing now, if you traded Standord for Levi's).
49ers own Leeds United... when I was recently in London I saw them lose 5-0 to Arsenal, surprised to see they're actually mid-table (12th) between Manchester United and Newcastle.
Your friend is a reliable source? Wow, if true and the Niners really end up purchasing the Quakes, we will finally be rid of Fisher. Do you know what type of preliminary stages they are discussing? If it happens, I'm betting they would only play big games at Levi's. LAG & LAFC and maybe a Messi-Miami game......
I've hear it said that the best MLS teams are mid table Premier League... not sure that's true, but for the point... York should bring them the play the Quakes at Levis. Sure win for Leeds.
I read MLS is at the level of maybe the lower half of the EPL or maybe on par with the Championship. I’m betting though, if you place those same teams in MLS, many players and clubs alike would struggle if they had to endure the travel of MLS clubs. Currently, there are 4 clubs in London which is 6 games home and away but that won't ever happen in MLS. I'd love to see the level of the league if some of those clubs were placed in our cities across the country, traveling from Montreal to San Diego, LA to NY, Vancouver to Miami and/or playing on turf in some places like in Seattle during the hot summer months.
Something I always remind myself is that LA to NY is about the same distance as London to Istanbul. Even Toronto to Miami is like London to Rome. Even San Jose to Seattle is further than London to Berlin. PS: Turf should be banned. If a team can't figure out a stadium without it, then they forfeit all their home games until they do!
I recall a conversation between Zidane and Beckham around 2007/08 when he asked David how far LA was from NY. Becks told him it was like 5 or 6 hours by plane and Zizou couldn’t believe it. It’s not only the travel that is difficult. Matias Almeyda when he was coaching the Quakes went on a podcast with Fabio Cannavaro talking about how difficult MLS is. Andrea Pirlo went from starting a Champions League Final for Juventus in 2015 and only six weeks later looked lost in New York City. Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne went from winning a Euro to struggling and failing in Toronto and they are both now back in Italy. Insigne is without a club and I don’t think many top or even mid table teams will want or seek his services. We all see what happened with Olivier Giroud so MLS is far from an “easy league”.
Also, looking it up , there are actually seven EPL clubs in London. That makes for 12 league games home and away or a 1/3 of a season for each club.
So Fisher won’t be in control which is good. We’ve been needing other investors since 2008. Anyway, whomever comes in, they can’t be worse than Fisher.
Found this site: Premier League travel: https://www.footballteamnews.com/travel-distances?guide=488 MLS Travel: https://www.footballteamnews.com/travel-distances?guide=464 Nashville has the shortest distance between clubs in MLS. I don't believe this takes into account actual schedules; just distance between locations.
I feel like you have to cut Fisher out completely, cuz otherwise it is like keeping a leg that has severe gangrene.
I heard there's a term sheet floating around out there and that Fisher is asking way too much... however... that's all pro sports teams... they are like art pieces, you can't just look at the cash flow when determining valuation. Maybe the world cup next summer will spike some interest and larry ellison's son or someone will get soccer fever and come in. 49ers could be good if they don't move all our games to levi's... could get some Leeds players on loan. I get the feeling that Fisher wants out of California (for political reasons - sick of our liberal politics?). Sold massive compound in Atherton, moving A's to vegas, selling Quakes...
