Ian has been very loyal to the Quakes and I think they really value him. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them hire him to coach the reserve team (Galindo is still out recovering right?) I don’t know his ambitions of course, but he seems to be thriving in an organization that struggles with success.
Yes but he has a tarnished record going to LA for the 2007 season, however I think that was more loyalty to Frank Yallop then anything. Yes Galindo is still out, but ambition wise I'd imagine he'd love to have any opportunity to coach an MLS squad and money can attract anyone if the value is right. He's a very good coach, and he's getting noticed. I personally think its taking a step back going to the reserve league from the USL top tier. I don't think he'd be interested in that. They will probably promote one of the academy coaches if anything. John Doyle used to run our reserves and he did quite well.
Galindo was already a head coach in Mexico and I believe he turned down offers to coach other teams. I’m pretty sure he’s enjoying working with Matias as an assistant and will almost certainly leave with him to the next destination. He’s also dealing with health problems and may never return to the field. We don’t know, but it’s possible that Russell has already been assured by Fisher that he is next in line as head coach. He’s never been publicly critical of the team or the organization. If he’s the guy when Almeyda’s mission is over, then I think he’ll continue coaching for the Quakes and be especially interested in the development of the younger players he will inherit. Ian Russell is a very accomplished coach, but don’t forget he’s also functioned as the de facto GM/Technical Director in Reno as well. He scouted far and wide to stock Reno with quality players that can not just compete, but win from year one. The Quakes would be super foolish to lose his qualities to another team.
Ron Wotus for the Giants deserves the job, and he was promised the job after Bochey was brought in the 2000s, and look what he got out of it... a 3rd base coach gig. But I'm open to see whatever.
I had completely forgotten about that! I'll give him a pass since there were no quakes then. ; ) I do like that he retired rather than move to Houston! Joining as an assistant the second we got the expansion team has to count for something, right? Like Ramiro, Ronnie and Try he's a good company man.
Very much so, which is why I think he was loyal to Frank more then anything. Frank could have coached anyone and Ian would have shown up.
He was always nice to her... she went to college in LA and the kit man for the Gals would give her free tickets. One of the few times knowing me has ever paid off for anybody!
Ian Russell was named coach of the year for USL today. https://www.uslchampionship.com/news_article/show/1131386
Congrats to Ian and well deserved. He should get General Manager of the year as well for building such a fantastic squad. Putting 3 players directly into MLS is a great accomplishment.
I hope they have a plan in place for him (I suspect they do). That plan could not be revealed until the announcement of the Reno closure. He’s probably the sharpest guy in the organization. You don’t lose talent like that....
I bet they don’t have a plan for him, or their plan is to let him go. I have zero faith in Jesse and Matías.
Haha, over 4 years it was much more. In addition to preparing guys to go to MLS, he also had players move to international clubs as well. Reno has been a nice stop for guys to move to the next level.
So we all want Ian Russell to come onto our staff, we all want Wondolowski to join the staff, Galindo presumably will come back next year. Exactly how many coaches do you think this teams realistically going to hire? Almeyda's guys seem to follow him everywhere, I don't think he'd fire any of them for the likes of Russell and Wondolowski. The reality is Ian isn't employed by the Earthquakes, we don't have the magic spot waiting for him for Almeyda when he leaves. He also speaks politically correct and positive about the organization because what else is going to say? They suck ass? Of course not that's career suicide for a young up and coming coach. We have no room on our staff and its highly doubtful he takes over the reserve team, I bet that shit ass Covelo takes that team. It would be a step in the wrong direction for Ian to take anything less then a top tier USL Program or MLS Team at this point. So we are probably going to lose Ian for the foreseeable future with anything Earthquakes related. Lets just hope its not with the Galaxy.
Do you know how our reserve league is supposed to set up for coaches Replikait? It used to be that the assistant coach coached all reserve matches.
I’m not going to cast aspersions on John Fisher’s intelligence, but I feel like he would be able to fit Ian Russell into a position with the Quakes if he truly understands Russell’s value. The Quakes have used Ian as a de facto scout for years. They are very thin in the scouting department and losing his abilities to recognize and recruit talent would be a heavy blow. For sure the smartest thing would be to hire him as domestic scout and have him free up Bruno Costa to focus on the international scouting. MLS is changing the rules to encourage teams to locate and sign young DPs. The Quakes have a guy in Costa that can locate the Judsons of the world if he has time and resources to do it. Right now Costa is heavily involved in the Quakes Academy scouting. Turn that over to Ian. Let Russell shake out players in “open territories” to join the Quakes. Ian can also step in to help on the coaching front if anything happens with an academy coach (these guys get hired all the time for other positions), so having Russell has a “temp” would be a smart option. The only reason this might not happen is it could make Almeyda or Jesse nervous that Russell is available if they hit a rough patch. For sure Covelo would coach the coming reserve team.
Are we sure Ian isn't on the Quakes staff? I thought the technical side of Reno was run buy the Quakes with their own people? Also Ian was consulted with on the superdraft picks.
