Definitely need to throw mad props to Eddie for:

The winning goal in MLS Cup I
The winning goal in the Interamerican Cup

Dominating games as a central defender

Letting us hear (as we do all too infrequently) the term "world class American player" a little more often

    The Eddie Pope foundation

    CLASS

I hope he plays every national team game now...moves to Europe before the Mutts play DCU...and comes back to RFK someday.

    salud!

Good luck Eddie, hope you can establish a chapter of your foundation in the big apple (the most positive outcome of this trade and it doesn't even involve the club) and please, do slip on a banana peel when you come to pay at RFK.

The winning goal in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

    Happy Birthday (12/24).

I am going to miss you.

I wish you the best of luck.

Eddie, I was there on that dark rainy day in Foxboro in 1996 when you scored the goal that lit the passion. I 've been there thru the good and the bad with you. I gave you my US flag at the Unity games.
I know, as do most of the United faithful on these boards, that you are and always will be DC United.

We will see you in a different colored kit, but we know in your heart as well as ours, YOU ARE THE RED & BLACK.

Eddie has been our most consistent DC United player over the duration of the franchise. At the same time, he has remained a stalwart with the National team and is just coming off of his best World Cup, and our country's best Cup ever.

His quiet demeanor is a perfect metaphor for the type of player he is. He doesn't scream and yell on the field, nor does he routinely create spectacular looking plays. But he plays consistently strong, day-in and day-out, shutting down the best offensive players that the MLS and the World have to offer. And he has done it EVERY SINGLE YEAR. And he is still doing it - Unbelievable!

Eddie doesn't lead with his mouth, he leads by example: on and off the filed. If anybody doesn't recognize the great loss of a player and a person to the DC United Organization and the city of Washington, then they don't know a thing about football and they don't know a thing about people.

    Eddie,
You are a role model for us all. Thanks for your hard work on and off the field. You bring the Metros a level of class that they've never had. We'll all have to respect them more now.
    Good luck

    Eddie,

Your spirit will never leave RFK, though your body must. Your grace will live here forever in the lives of all those that were helped onward and upward by your community service. I can only dream that our team will ever be able to find another player with your skill and class. May the stench of the Scum never overwhelm or affect you, and could you please have some sudden "the dog ate my paper" type of injury or event whenever our teams are scheduled to meet on the pitch. The thought of rooting against you tears at my heart.

Good luck (unfortunately I must wish this on you as an individual and can not extend these feelings to the rest of your new team) in all that you do, and may the sun always smile on you.

I feel bad for Eddie. Obviously we all thank him for his dedicated service to DC United. But I refuse to feel very bad for a someone who has made over a million playing soccer for a living

It's not like the guy died. He gets to continue making lots playing soccer for Bob Bradley-a guy he said he'll be excited to play for

I do feel sorry for the posters who are feeling terrible about the trades!!

Again thanks Eddie and good luck

    Eddie,

There's so much to say about you. Pretty ironic for someone who is so quiet.

You gained the title of "Best American Defender" without getting a mohawk, wearing a T-shirt underneath your jersey with a controversial slogan, or talking trash in the press.

You just went out and did your job, game in and game out, and your excellence was so clear that you were recognized anyway.

Other United players may have been more celebrated than you in their time - Etcheverry, Harkes, Rammel, Diaz Arce, Moreno, Lassiter, Convey, and Quaranta all got more pub than you did.

But you were our most important player.

Even as you leave us, you won't get the general recognition you deserve. People won't recognize that you rank with athletic giants of this area, such as Cal Ripken, Darrell Green, and Rod Langway, who were not only world-class athletes, not only leaders on great teams, but also devoted to using their fame to do good. They played on and led some of the greatest teams this area has ever seen, and they were pillars of the community off the field.

To their teams, to their fans, to their community - they were rocks.

The average sportswriter or sports fan may not even know your name. They certainly don't know what you've meant not only to DC United, but to DC.

But we, the fans of DC United, know.

You were Steady Eddie - the player we as fans could count on to always give maximum effort, always be in position, always make the play.

Your class, professionalism, quiet consistency, and above all EXCELLENCE have come to define the team we love so much.

You defended the toughest scorers this team has faced. You scored the biggest goals this team has scored.

    You were our rock.

DC United might now use the cap room it has to improve dramatically. The team may go undefeated, may even be unscored upon, and may roll to another MLS Cup championship to cap off its greatest season ever. And if all this happens, even if all our wildest dreams as fans come true...

    We will still miss you.

    A very sad day indeed.

Bye and thanks Steady Eddie. Nothing better than watching you slide across Foxboro in celebration of the Cup winner.

With 88 year old Fernando Hierro still there, Eddie would look good wearing the white :)

A quiet leader and champion on and off the field.
    Best of luck Eddie!
