Yallop did 3 good things in his career. 2 MLS Cups Gave Dominic Kinnear and Ian Russell a pathway to showcase they're actual good coaches. Built Houston a MLS cup winning formula and foundation.
Yeah it’s kinda like we haven’t had sustained success since 2012 (or even 2001-2005) but at the same time the Stahre era was particularly bad, and even well worse than the Dom era (post 2008).
We haven't had success since 2001-2003. Houston had sustained success from 2005-2012. I will argue we were pretty good 2010-2013, not because of Yallop, but more Watson and Russell.
We did try to get Gordon in 2008, but Gordon told Yallop no, he had 0 desire to play for San Jose at that time, and thats why we took Glinton. We probably should have drafted better in 2008, but a lot of players turned down the expansion. One of those dark horse rules they have. Goldthwaite and Boyens also turned down San Jose so we got Joe Vide and Chris Pozniak. Ironic for Gordon, he ended up in SJ and had the best run of his career, and became the most clutch player in MLS history, and got to head back to LA and Win MLS Cup, and get a Gold Cup medal, and some National Team looks. Lenhart... sucked, but was fun to watch.
We've had more then a few people refuse to play for San Jose and demand a trade or never reported... Andy Gruenebaum, Brian Carroll, Chris Pozniak, Bryan Jordon, Alan Gordon 1.0, Kevin Goldthwaite and a few others. More recently, everyone.
He was fun to watch run around like a jacked up meat head for a couple season with us, but he was everything most of the folks here complain about other guys being on other teams, a complete hack. He was piss poor for Columbus.
Yeah, Lenny was definitely an outcast. I kind of felt bad for him after his dad died in 2011 as it was a year after I lost mine. I think he was affected by the loss because he almost quit the game. In 2012, he had for him, a career year but then, so did everyone else that season. Too bad it didn't last.
I don’t think his knee was ever right which is why he never came back to the Quakes. When I saw him at the beach after he was done playing with the Quakes it seemed like he was traveling around. He said he needed to “decompress”. His travels probably led him to Japan where he apparently decided to try to play again in some lower division league.
Weren’t the Quakes paying Luchi a lot of money? Doubt Monterey would pay that kind of salary, unless Luchi agreed to work for nothing rather than double dip.
Unfortunately, Luchi's going to be lucky to get another head coaching job in the short term after commandeering his team to possibly the worst ever MLS season. He shouldn't be worrying about salary at this point. He's going to have to build up his career again.
Luchi could do something with the USSF again and work as an assistant or even youth team coach. U.S. Soccer Federation oversees and promotes the development of 14 youth national teams, and I could easily see him getting a gig some place... Typically in a coaching contract where a fired coach is getting paid off, there's a "duty to mitigate" so that if he gets a new job, the new salary offsets what the old team owes him.
Spoke to Frank today at the Los Gatos Wheel Works. He is back in Los Gatos and plans to stay. I asked him about Arena and he says he thinks Arena will do a good job.
Wheel Works, eh? Always a likely place to run into a former Quakes coach. I prefer the Goodyear next door. Not sure about the tires but they are nice people and seem reasonably honest. I have a low bar.
Goodyear's smaller parking lot was full, Wheel Works wasn't and air pressure service was immediately available.
