That's what we call it in Australia because we have 4 different codes of Football. They are Aussie Rules, Soccer, League and union.
wow the 1 millionth thread on what socer means, you should be awarded a medal, or some kind of recognition for your achievement
And for starting the 1,000th thread on the subject you will be awarded the wooden medal of no imagination. For general information though...When the US originally joined FIFA they joined as "The U.S. Football Association (USFA)"
Soccer is a word coined from 'Association football'. When footy was first being played in England there where quite a few variations of the rules. One of the most popular rules played was that of 'Association football' (which resembles modern day football). And people just shorted that to soccer.
Fifty cents for the any person to dig 50 threads from the archives started by new members with less than 10 posts...!!! entitled "Soccer or football' "The English said soccer first" "We use soccer" "why do Americans say Sawker" "It's football not soccer" or any of that vein. I can't give more than fifty cents, it'd break me.
I posted that Boro_lad because the title of this thread is 'The Official explanation for the word "soccer"'. And thats what i posted. The thread starter just posted a defination. Ok danny mills.
I may take you up on that search, if I can include threads like, "It's futbol not football" "It's offside not offsides" "[POLL] relegation? vote now" "playoff system, which to use" "overtime...keep it? dump it?" "anyone know if they're going to televise (name of tournament here)" "i liked the countdown clock, it's the American way" "let's expand to (city name in the middle of nowhere)" "can you play soccer on astroturf?" "that stadium plan is a DONE DEAL!"
