I meant to say DeRo works better with Landon than he does with Chingy not he is a better partner for Landon.

The 2001 cup was 3 years ago, and will be even farther in the past by next season. That is not a reason to protect him.

Seems like your thinking back to the 2002 world cup. He has only been a solid anchor of our backline and a great mentor to our young defenders.

Maybe, but it seem the Quakes have done better this season when Cochrane, Dayak and Dunivant were playing than when Agos or Waibel were in.

Waibel, Dayak, Hart, Cochrane, Robinson, Agoos, Dunivant have all made contributions this season. And with the injuries to every single one of these players (except Waibel) Our defense hasn't done too bad. I can't imagine losing a vet on defense though because if we have more injuries then who would step in. Some games we only had 3 healthy defenders.Maybe convert Coralles because he hits one goalazzo in a full moon.

    Anybody watch the Canada/Honduras game?

DeRo (one of my personal faves) was pretty hot n' cold, but........ He had a couple of awesome plays. One that comes to mind was getting by several players on the left then a BEAUTIFUL cross in front of the goal, only to see his teammate whiff it!

Nice stuff...his defense, however, was questionable.

Espanol! Those stations are on in my house about the same amount of time as the English speaking speaking stations! (Unfortunately, the only thing I've picked up is "Sacaramenta!" I think it means..they missed?) : )

I didn't get to see the whole game (even got yelled at a bit for making the family late for a party..Oh well!), but was surprised to see Canada...looks like their play is improving a bit.....also saw Onstad make a KILLER point-blank save!

Off topic – I hope the new Chivas team doesn’t get away with the horrible chopping that seams to be prevalent in the Mexican leagues…watched Cruz Azul vs. Jaguars last night….HORRIBLE! Man, there was some potential career ending chops! Disgusting.

How bout the Earthquakes play this line up:

    LF: Brian Ching
    RF: Landon Donovan
    LM: Dwayne DeRosario
    CM: Richard Mulrooney
    CM: Ronnie Eckelund
    RM: Brian Mullan
    LB: Eddie Robinson
    CB: Jeff Agoos
    CB: Troy Dayak
    RB: Craig Waibel
    GK: Pat Onstad

I personally believe that Dom is not a good coach b/c he cant see that DeRO is fabolous and should be in the starting 11, Yallop has been using him on the wing and if you remember correctly last time Dwayne played in the wing we beat LA 4-2 and if im not wrong he scored a goal and had like 3 assist.

This looks like exactly what we used to have. DeRo wasn't playing fantastically, and many of us agreed with Dom's decision to play him as a super sub. He's fantastic coming in in say, the 60th, and scoring a few goals. It's just that Dom isn't playing him at all.

    Totally agree.

And DeRo has been looking pretty dejected as of late!

BTW, he seems to be one of the coolest EQs when signing autographs.

I wouldn't mind seeing him on the flank more. One of the problems I have, and he isn't the only Quakes player to do this, is to stay central. He doesn't tend to have very many long runs. Sometimes some short ones, but not enough to stretch the defence and give himself, or his teammates, space to work with.

He's had plenty of success/effectiveness on the outside. Against LA in that brilliant individual effort, and the pass from the touchline to Donovan in MLS Cup 2003.

Has he gotten some looks as a outside middie for Canada?

thanks for the opening goal against KC in the semis

Eric Wynalda in his pre-Oct-24 analysis wrote: "...it's going to take one great play, one act of brilliance, something that MLS fans will remember for a long time, to win this one."

Watching the game at Spartan, I was thinking to myself that the Quakes were getting stymied alot, and for them to get a goal, it was going to take something special from DeRosario, cuz conventional wasn't going to cut it. Within about 2 minutes after that thought, he opened the scoring on a shot? cross? that deflected inside the far post. From our angle, we couldn't see the deflection, so we thought it was just an incredible shot. But incredible or not, it was probably one of the loudest roars I have heard at Spartan this season, even tho we only had 8k+ fans. And when he left the field (don't know why the coaches made that choice, BTW) he got quite a standing ovation from the crowd. Congrats to him!

it always amazes me how he can score the best goals or the ones that make you think how the heck did he do that, even if it was unintentional, for as little as he plays. I love DeRo.

The reason for the Sub, was so that he could get that ovation. Coaches make subs, so the fans can honor their heroes.

Dero brings alot to the game. good dribbling skills, excellent at holding the ball when needed, good at taking defenders one on one, plays both wings throughout the game, keeps defenders on thier toes always, very good with both feet, helps out in the defence and midfield, Good with his back to the net, scores clutch goals and some of the most exciting goals ever in the MlS. I wished I could have seen him play alot more this year. I think he is a great player and very entertaining to watch. I play soccer all the time and I wish I had half his energy. Sometimes he surprises me and and my buddy's with the things he does. My friend says his contract should be up this year(I hope it is not true). But I can't see Dero staying in SJ to come off the bench. What are we going to do with out Landon and Dero. He is real people person. Down to earth guy when I met him. Great guy. I think we would have had a better season if he played more. :(

Did he? I saw a Quakes team that played more friggin' long ball... which is more Brian Ching ball.

And guess what happened again: Brian Ching SUCKED. And he gifted them a goal.

Ching would've walked away with the scoring title if he put away the easy ones - and we'd be in the semi-finals.

I'd have kept DeRo on the field, and tried to keep possession.

I gotta agree with that. What was up with the long ball over the top? We needed to control the ball at midfield with good combination play - but we didn't get much chance to do that with hoofing it up the field just for the KC defenders to control. Gotta admit, I was very puzzled by DeRo coming on. I'd have pulled Ching, if any of them.

Well you see, if we have Ching on the field, we've got another big defender to challenge their aerial threats on set pieces.

    Oops.

Turns out a little foot skill would've helped.

And who was that aerial threat, anyway? Conroy? Conran? He looked familiar, and didn't struggle much with Ching.

No, the scoring title is regular-season only. I think it's because it wouldn't be fair to teams that didn't make the playoffs or were eliminated.

    Separate points:

    1. He'd have walked away with the scoring title if he'd converted his sitters. Watch games like Quakes/DCU again. The guy has enjoyed lot of P.T., great support and good goalmouth servce.

    2. In the KC game he played poorly and missed at least one sitter. I think he headed it with his shoulder from two yards out. Ching shows up in that game and there's no way we miss the conference final.

I don't want to go overboard here, but I'd like to balance the prevailing discussion and opinion on DeRo and Ching, because Ching has had more bad games then good this season, yet for some reason people want to see the bigger, lesser skilled guy out there all the time.

the fact of the matter is that earthquakes play a better short game with Dero out there. He tries to make him self available in more ways than one. He is much better than Ching with his back to the net and he makes himself available on the flanks 90% more than Ching. Everyone was blaming Dero early in the season saying that he is not clicking with the team. But if you watch the games carefully the team was not clicking at all as a whole. And how much better were we clicking with Ching up top? Ching has played alot more minutes than Dero, scored alot of goals and we were a .500 team. Dero helps out alot more on defence, while Ching stays by the centre line and makes one dimensional runs up the middle of the field. Ching is not a bad player, but he brings down the team because he doesn't put alot of effort in helping his team mates. He does not back up his midfield or defence. It looks like Ching only waits for his team mates to make plays in the 18 yard box for him then he looks like the hero. But it was every other players contrabution and hard work that got the ball to him. Ching does very little running in the game, but by the 70min he is tired. Another funny thing I noticed is that almost every time Dero scores he gets subbed out. But when Ching scores he does not get subbed out. Whats with that? Seems kinda odd.
