Daniel was/is a great GK but that can also be attributed to always being tested and having a crap defense and/or team. Anyway, GK's come and go as do all players. The Quakes haven't won anything forever so I'm sure Bruce wants to start anew. You either hang on to your veteran players who haven't won anything or you go after newer and younger players who are hungry to win. It remains to be seen if he is using the right judgement or not it is clear that Arena means business.
Yeah this is concerning. It’s OK to clean house to some extent but you don’t usually start with your best players. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We re-signed Daniel back in Feb thru 2026 with options all the way thru 2028. At least we won’t be getting nothing for him presumably. Bruce has dumped Hernán, Martinez, maybe Espinoza, now Daniel(?), and sent Rodrigues to the permanent doghouse. I’m beginning to notice a pattern.
True, we should take with a grain of salt. But we never got an explanation why Daniel didn’t start the last game did we?
We are about 2 weeks from our entire roster being Earl Edwards, Ronaldo Vieira, Preston Judd (we’ve re-signed enough times he’ll occupy 2 roster spots), and Noel Buck
Matt Doyle has a substack now. He talks about all the cuts that are coming (most of the Hispanic backline) including why Daniel will be let go. https://open.substack.com/pub/tacti...guides-year-2-of-bruce?r=lti5a&utm_medium=ios
So there are a couple of competing narratives around the Espinoza thing. 1) The Quakes accidently missed the deadline to exercise Espinoza's option. Doyle is leaning heavily into this one, also implied by Humphrey Bogert. And he extends his jumping to conclusions that Leitch was let go as a result of this supposed error. It's possible, sure. But there may be many other reasons that Bruce was ready to let CL go and it could be entirely coincidential. 2) The Quakes purposely did not exercise Espinoza's option because they want to bring him in at a little lower number and possibly make him a TAM player, to free up another DP spot This is implied by a post by @elhula below. IIRC elhula has been right on other things about the Quakes in the past before they happened, so I think the source is good. I believe this before I believe Bogert / Doyle's narrative, which makes a great "Quakes are dysfunctional" story and everything (hah-hah, let's have a laugh!), but may or may not be true.
Matt Doyle's piece is pretty dire: That's a lot of "ifs" and his proposed line-up isn't going to bring joy to any of our hearts. I'm starting to think that 2026 will not be the year we win the cup after all.
Well, you should read @elhula's post in the offseason thread. It's way more sunny. Could sign Espinoza to a TAM contract, opening up 2 more DP slots, and prospects for sale looking pretty good. As I said, I trust elhula's source more than I do Doyle. He has a long history of getting things wrong about the Quakes. Some things right, and lots of things wrong too.
I didn’t interpret Doyle’s article the way u did. I thought his point was that Daniel was inconsistently either the best or the worst, was a bad GK in the 2nd half of the season, but has a contract thru 2026. So Bruce needs to find a replacement, and it ain’t Edwards.
Oh I thought we were in the Daniel thread! … oh by golly, we are! No matter, we’re on the same page now, right, jazzy?
Well, as you posted "He talks about all the cuts that are coming", so I went to read about all the cuts that were coming, and along with Daniel, there was a lot about Espinoza. So since you posted the Doyle thing in this thread, I just continued the thread of conversation about that here. Not the first time we taken a tangent in a thread.
It's ok, Jazzy. It seems like some guys in this forum misinterpret my posts 30-50% of the time. Doesn't happen to me in the TSS discord. I try not to take it personally.. even if it is... maybe it's a dialect of old-guy-speak
Actually, FWIW I think it was you who misinterpreted *my* post. I posted about Espinoza and you quoted it, and then said that's not how you interpreted Doyle's piece, and then started talking about Daniel. Doyle's piece had both Daniel stuff and Espinoza stuff. It was a whole "state of the Quakes" thing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't either, but you implied that I misinterpreted your post, and I wanted to give my side of the story. That's all.
It’s ok, jazzy, I really don’t care. I was actually joking it’s my fault, that I am speaking the wrong dialect. But you didn’t realize it was a joke.
"State of the roster: Not threadbare, provided Arena is confident that guys like Reid Roberts and Max Floriani can take the type of step forward that Daniel Munie did last year, or that Niko Tsakiris is ready to become a starter, or that he can convince Noel Buck it’s 2023 again." I want some of whatever Matt Doyle is smoking. I look at our roster and threadbare is the word that immediately jumped to mind.
