http://www.sjearthquakes.com/post/2015/12/28/earthquakes-sign-forward-chad-barrett He checks all the boxes. In his 30's--check. Underachiever--check. Bounced around, trying to shake off "underachiever" tag--check. I hope the price was low. He seems like roster depth unless DomJohn favor him over Quincy and/or Innocent or plan to move Wondo.
I'm okay with this. As MLS journeymen forwards go, he's not bad. He can put the ball in the net from time to time and has a pretty good work-rate. I imagine this move is with an eye to replace the Jahn/Sherrod pairing so as to have a goal-scoring option off the bench that might actually score a goal or two. I agree that I hope he's not costing us too much for the role. I remember hearing he has an excessive sweating condition that affects his stamina, so he has difficulty going 90 (I think I also remember hearing he drinks pickle juice? to help with this?). Anyhow, unless we have an injury crisis at forward, I don't think that would be too much of a concern.
head scratcher.......as long as he is replacing the (hopefully) soon to be departed combo of Jahn/Sherrod. If he's not here to replace those two then I find this signing very confusing....can't wait to read the PR spin from the front office on this one. Not exactly the big off season signing I was hoping for......
This is such a Quakes signing. If someone had wrote a fan fiction about the Quakes signing Chad Barrett I'd call it crap because it was too cliche to be believable.
I don't get why people are so down on Chad Barrett... he basically puts up Steven Lenhart pre-injury numbers in terms of goals per season. And he made $100k last season whereas Lenhart made $150k to do absolutely nothing (and some people around here still think he has value). He might be making even less than that now, but in any case $100k is certainly a cheap price to pay for 5-7 goals. In two seasons with the Sounders, Barrett scored 12 goals in less than 1700 minutes, which is .6 goals/90min. Last year, aside from Wondo, we went into preseason with the following forwards: Lenhart, Sherrod, Jahn, Fucito, Tyrpak, Mez I'd say we're already looking quite a bit better than that with Innocent (assuming he's alive), Amarikwa, Barrett...
Decent experienced MLS depth...a grinder with some heat....better than our current back ups at forward...Barrett replaces Fucito...I'm not complaining.
.6 goals per 90 minutes? Last time I checked there are no .6 goals in soccer. We can't even sign someone who can score a whole goal !
2015 totals 715 mins 325 touches 156 completions 238 attempts 66% passing rate 15 turnovers 6 dispossessions 22 box entries 5 goals 0 assist 0 secondary assist 6 SOG assists 18 shots 3 SOG 7 tackles 26 duels won 5 interceptions 20 recoveries 2 clearances 9 fouls committed 4 fouls suffered
If his salary is less than $100k then I'm fine with this. He's got a decent journeyman goal scoring record. Quakes needed more options up front and with the salary cap, this is a decent backup at a decent price with the capability to get thrown in at the end of games and make a difference. Now, if JD thinks he's done, that this is the final piece of the puzzle and the 2016 Quakes are ready for a post season run, then its a problem.
If he came cheap then I'm fine with a guy who will put the ball in the net every four or five games. We need more guys like that, and less like Fucito and Sherrod.
I don't think Fucito or Sherrod got 4 or 5 games in which to put the ball into the net. Certainly Fucito didn't. In any case, I can look at this signing objectively, and think, yeah, it's good, for the right price. His goals per minute over his career is more or less identical to Lenny's. At the time, to me this is the "You Got Socks for Christmas!" signing. Yeah, I can kind of use them, but it's not exactly an exciting gift, to say the least. I'd almost rather watch Adam Jahn flail about out there because 1) he's our flailing forward, 2) he's got some interesting skills - good feet, etc., and some unknown upside (where as with Barrett we know what we will get) and 3) I respect how he's tried so hard to change his body physically to increase his chance for success in MLS. He was a monster in preseason, things just didn't go his way in the regular season.
lenny is probably done and barret is better than fucito/jahn/sherrod. he's not good but he's better than some of the useless players we had at fwd last season.
Someone said that he sweats a lot and drinks pickle juice. Maybe a switch to bone broth would sort him out.
Well as an indicator of what heights we are shooting for, this says we are aiming for another season of irrelevancy. We are the Dollar Store of MLS. Shoot me now, please! aarrgghhh I've always called Chad Barrett the poor man's Wayne Rooney.
