Imagine bringing back an arrogant loudmouth old man in his 70s from New York and expecting things to improve what was the Quakes electoral college thinking smh

jk I approve of this hiring, as long as Bruce:
    - gets the $$ he needs from Fisher
    - doesn't bring in his old players who are past it

Interesting leadership model. It looks good to me... I hope Bruce changes everything.

Gary Singh and I discussed the options in the concourse before the last home game about a month ago and I was surprised he agreed that Bruce Arena was the best option.

At the very least, he reinvigorates the brand, making the Quakes "relevant" (a term I hate, but a good shorthand for keeping interest in the fanbase while the rebuilding continues).

This is going to be weird seeing him on the Quakes bench.

Ironically, Bruce Arena is the very first head coach that San José ever faced in the MLS era.

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

Leitch will be reporting to Arena. That’s gotta be a big demotion…

I called that setup a week or 2 ago (Bruce as coach / sporting director but CL retains as GM), and was ridiculed for it by at least one person.

"I don't think you know how this stuff works in the real world. When you get BA you don't just get BA - you get his entire coeterie of staff who would take on many of those functions."

So I guess I do understand how this stuff works in the real world, at least sometimes.

Here we go again. Kinda surprised Il Bruce would get hoodwinked by that, but he probably just wants another gig in the league and may just be playing along.

Bruce is smart enough not to make any grand pronouncements. No "I'll be disappointed if we're not lifting trophies in a few years" kind of stuff like Luchi said (and probably Almeyda too - can't remember).

"I think it's an interesting job. It's certainly going to be challenging," Arena told ESPN in an exclusive interview."

"I think there's potential there to develop the club into a team that can certainly be better than they've demonstrated over the last couple of years."

You're asking that about the Quakes??

(the rest of MLS has moved away from this aside from like SKC where they tried to)

Does that mean Arena doesn't plan to be here by 2026 because we were promised MLS Cup lol

This is literally the lowest of bars!

I think there is a lot of leeway about what "Sporting Director" actually does, other than he's the guy that "directs the sporting stuff". What I thought made sense from the beginning is that you hire Bruce as the head coach and then his main "sporting director" duties are to make the roster decisions. He's 73, you want to keep his responsibilities pretty contained. So CL does all the things he's already doing but he doesn't make roster decisions. Maybe he's at the table but his main job is to actually make the deals.

As for the academy Bruce may have some high-level input into style of play and things like that, but there again I think CL will be the main overseer for that and delegate to Woly. I think Bruce's involvement in that will be very minimal.

As for the "CL reports to BA" stuff, that was probably just to throw Bruce a bone and make him the top dog. Whether CL reports to him or not, it's going to be CL's job to acquire the players, so I don't think it changes much. I think it just sort of cements he idea that Bruce makes the roster calls.

Looking forward to Bruce sitting thru an interview with "The Aftershock Guys" :). He may not have quite as much patience with them as Luchi and Ian had (and they had a lot of patience with those guys).

Robert Jonas: Now can you talk to us about how you prepared for this game, I know you said that you wanted to work on some things in the attack, and it seems like things did improve a bit over the week before in that 1-1 draw with Seattle, where I thought the team looked pretty in sync, but given that and given that you were missing a few key..."

Il Bruce: Would you ask the damn question already!!

    the brain trust weighs in

1854341756156023141 is not a valid tweet id

Uh at this point most Quakes fans will take "short term gains" after "years of suckitude"

Backwards on player development, didn't Arena play young guys like Petrovic, Noel Buck, Esmir B, etc?

Of the 2 bad takes, Alex's is worse (no big surprise). 1) "Full rebuild" is fan fantasyland when you have so many guys on guaranteed contracts, and 2) Arena says the roster isn't as bad as the results, to begin with, and 3) OK, maybe you're not a fan or you think he's past it, but how will it be "alienating" to the fans to hire the winningest coach in MLS history?

As for Jamon, yeah I don't think it's necessarily going backward on player development. You'll play if you can play.

Why would I be alienated by the winningest coach in MLS history? He might be an asshole, but he’s now our asshole. :)
